- Cor Mulder - Johnny has gone for a soldier
Trad. Folksong
(anonymous)
Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill
Who could blame me cry my fill
Every tear would turn a mill
Johnny's gone for a soldier
Me, oh my, I loved him so,
Broke my heart to see him go,
And only time will heal my woe,
Johnny has gone for a soldier.
I sold my flax, I sold my wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
So it in battle, he may wield
Johnny has gone for a soldier
Thank you for this. My mom sang this to me when I was a baby to help me sleep. This is an amazing version, and it means so much to me to hear it again.
I love the many versions of this old song. Sung it to all my sons when they were babes. I learned it with these words and the Irish chorus.
This is a lovely, lovely version. I have heard it in other languages, styles, wording, and never get tired of it! Your song is absolutely riveting and so very beautiful!!! Thank you so much for making this and allowing us to hear such beauty.
One of my favorite versions so far! Thanks so much for uploading this.
A good version this
Deep, beautiful version. I'm going to look for more Cor Mulder videos. Siúle A Rúne. Shule Aroon. Profound meaning, the grief that war brings....
Search for the John Tams version.
