There is a part of the brain called the ventral striatum, aka the ""seeking system,"" that drives humans to explore and learn new things. When activated, the system releases dopamine and makes us feel good.
There are three main ways that leaders can stimulate the ventral striatums of their team: through experimentation, by finding ways to learn and play to individual strengths, and by making the purpose of the work personal.
As some major companies have learned, being playful and curious is a pathway to boosted creativity and innovation.

    TRANSCRIPT:
DAN CABLE: I can tell you that being playful and being curious are the root of innovation. There appears to be a part of our brain called the ventral striatum, that's the technical term, or you also could call it the seeking system. And this system is urging us to explore the boundaries of what we know. It's the new and it's the desire to learn. This onboard, innate part of our brain we can think about stimulating it, we can think about activating it. For example, when the seeking system is activated it releases dopamine into our body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that makes us feel more alive. Literally the feeling of zest or enthusiasm or curiosity wells up within us and it's an innate feeling. It's intrinsic. What might be interesting is to think about what are some ways that leaders can stimulate that part of the brain, and I think that there are three different approaches that they can use.
One of the ones that is probably the easiest is experimentation. And by experimentation what I mean is playing with the boundaries of how we usually do things to try to understand if we can create a better effect. Now Google has moved away from this in recent years but this early movement of giving people 20 percent of their time just to play around, this is something that 3M is still doing, 15 percent of engineers' time is bootleg time where they're not supposed to work on their regular job. They're supposed to experiment and play around with the edges. And we know that this is where a lot of these innovations come out. Like Google Maps or Sticky Notes. A lot of these come out of not a senior leader saying do it this way. But a senior leader saying play around. See what your interests are and where they take you. So I would call that a leadership practice or a leadership mindset that allows for the space to develop, to play, to invent, to create.
In addition to experimentation this idea about understanding our strengths and playing to our strengths. For humans this idea about identity and what is my potential and what am I capable of while I'm on the planet, that seems to be something that is an ignition switch. It makes us enthusiastic to try. It makes us want to pursue the potential that we have within us.
And then the third activator of the seeking system is this concept of the why of the work. Again this urge within us is to understand the cause and effect of our actions. But so many of us at work don't really ever get to see or feel that final effect. And so ways that leaders can help personalize the purpose is this third activator. And I'll give you one story about that. I can steal this story from Adam Grant. He looked at call center operators. But in this one they were not trying to solve problems. They were asking for money. They were fundraisers. And what he did is he randomly assigned half of the fundraisers to a condition where they just got to meet a student. And it was a recipient of the scholarship money and this student sat with them and said thank you - ten minutes. He said thank you, I just want to appreciate what you do. He goes, I couldn't afford school without you. I'm basically here because of you...

After some setbacks and an emotional day, I woke up completely rejuvenated, finding the right words again... I think this is similar to how I always deliver better results under stress. This last thing is pure trust, which comes from self knowledge. Not knowing yourself, makes you insecure and underperform.

ScubaTal Bowling We all work differently. Personally my ‘seeking system’ is always on, much to the annoyance of less curious folk perhaps 😅. If you need a schedule and without one you tend to attempt to stimulate yourself with UA-cam (even unknowingly) then perhaps you need to divert your go to stimulation source? Break your habits and you may find yourself more stimulated by something more worthy of your time. You can definitely be curious and playful as well as organised 😊

Sound like the familiar just do it.. Still very practical for those who have the time and the resources..
But that's not usually the case.. And so the experimentation is encouraging and yet only circumstantial.. Nice one!

0megalvyz1 Not necessarily true. People make sacrifices with their choices in life. If it is worth enough to you personally you should make time. It depends entirely on what an individual wants/needs and whether they recognise it. Many make excuses (however valid or believable) to not do things which would benefit themselves, they get themselves stuck and see only impossibilities. Mindset matters more here than time or resources.

@@zandervolker3439 Again very encouraging and still circumstantial..
Our perception is shaped by each individual experience from personal circumstances while our literal understanding might be on the same wavelength. How we each value as sacrifice differ from our cultural beliefs be it local, national and even here and now.. Global.
Your message resonates as to be positively proactive and that's the take.

I’m glad this came up because I can’t stop lol I have problems stopping learning, reading and experimenting even in social conversations and found that most of the time when I am just messing around I discover the most .. I was about to shut this down for a while because it is out of boredom for me. I thought something was wrong with me but apparently this is highly activated in my brain already.. now humanity first is the best way to go with anything so that is a great reminder

You prob can’t be playful if your threatened. But in my experience you can still be curious and at least driven to understand if that’s your natural temperment. Cuz dopamine feels good. But the playful part , you need to unblend from emotions and find ways to relax you also can’t be funny when threatened.

Great ideal! Though.. for a little imaginative exploration.. We are in a global pandemic, most of us under city lock down.. Twisting it a little bit more with the Chinese year of the rat.. Like labs rats.. Exchanging social media messages..because that's called social distancing..

That's a very buggy human feature.. Don't you agree?
