roy was one of, if not the greatest trumpet player that was alive in the 21st century. his style and playing were TIMELESS. he will be talked about for generations to come
A Monster Performance!! Add this to the list of great "Things To Come" performances: Roy Hargrove, Claudio, et al on trumpet, and a HUGE solo by Justin Robinson on alto sax. Thank you, Diz & Gil, and Slide & the All-Star Orchestra.
never heard that song played any better! (LCJO a distant second with faddis and wynton) Wow masters at work!! 4 trumpet solos and trade ins great Job!! i enjoyed it!
But also his phrase obviously didn’t sound finished... so I guess if I were playing alongside I’d let him finish OR try and compliment that phrase he played so it doesn’t sound awkward like it did here lol
@Julian Diaz We don't know if they were going to trade fours at that point because they were trading eights. Roy was expecting the eights for at least another chorus. For those who do not know, Roy was quoting "Planet Rock" or "Trans Europe Express" (take your pick), and--in mid-phrase--he was cut off by someone who 1. didn't recognize the song (or that it was mid-phrase) nor recognize that Roy was not done, or 2. decided (rightly or wrongly) that it was time to trade fours.
Yeah, bass player is a real cat. When I first saw that axe, I was worried, but sounds nice. Sure wish that Slide had soloed -- such an ignored virtuoso. Love the drummer, too, whoa!
This is the rendition of 'Things to Come' by Dizzy and his 70th Birthday Band. (including Jon Faddis and Arturo Sandoval!) Live recorded at the North Sea Jazz Festival 1987 in The Hague. Some great trumpet work, but please move your precious crystal glassware to a safe place before playing 😉 (Night in Tunesia not to be missed either!) ua-cam.com/video/anJTqa21Bfc/v-deo.html
Wow, I didn’t know that existed. I immediately thought Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock, which I’m pretty sure what Roy might’ve been thinking about as well. Now I see who Afrika got it from!
The personell indicated here is not exact. Roditi is inmense on trumpet, as Hargrove, but no idea who is the guy that ruins Hargrove´s Kraftwerk quote. You must listen to the other guys when you are trading, it´s not just a matter of playing virtuosistically and get the pay in Gillespie´s Tribute.
One set of personel: The Dizzy Gillespie™ All-Star Big Band under the direction of trombonist Slide Hampton with special guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove and featuring: James Moody - Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Vocals Jimmy Heath - Tenor Saxophone Frank Wess - Alto Saxophone, Flute Antonio Hart - Alto Saxophone, Flute Gary Smulyan - Baritone Saxophone Frank Greene - Lead Trumpet Greg Gisbert - Trumpet Randy Brecker - Trumpet Claudio Roditi - Trumpet, Percussion Jason Jackson - Lead Trombone Steve Davis - Trombone Jay Ashby - Trombone, Percussion Douglas Purviance - Bass Trombone Mulgrew Miller - Piano Marty Ashby - Guitar John Lee - Bass/ Executive Director Dennis Mackrel - Drums And introducing vocalist, Roberta Gambarini
I think you've listed a different version of the band with some overlap here. Randy Brecker is not on this gig (Roy Hargrove is the first soloist), nor is Antonio Hart (Justin Robinson is the alto soloist) and the pianist is not Mulgrew as someone else pointed out. It's Cyrus Chestnut.
I got you my friend: SLIDE HAMPTON - direct, bass trombone ROBERTA GAMBARINI - vocals BOBBY LAVELL - tenor sax ANTONIO HART - alto sax MARK GROSS - alto sax ANDERS BOIARSKY - tenor sax FRANK BASILE - baritone sax CLAUDIO RODITI - trumpet ROY HARGROVE - trumpet, fugelhorn, vocal (8) FRANK GREENE - trumpet GREG GISBERT - trumpet JAMES BURTON - trombone JASON JACKSON - trombone STEVE DAVIS - trombone DOUGLAS PURVIANCE - bass trombone JOHN LEE - bass guitar ROY ASSAF - piano DENNIS MACKREL - drums
Excuse me this is ridiculous - can you feel the rhythm? It is virtuosos displaying that they can play fast, but it does not give me the musical pleasure of feeling the rhythm through all my bones. There was a video on Dizzy and Parker showing how Dizzy was organizing things, but when he wanted dancers to illustrate that there were "moves" for the be-bop rhythm then the two dancers clearly were totally blown overboard, unable to make any real dance and instead did clown-tricks.
Rip Roy Hargrove man he was a great trumpet player
roy was one of, if not the greatest trumpet player that was alive in the 21st century. his style and playing were TIMELESS. he will be talked about for generations to come
Is that the only musician you know in the band? 🧑🎤

best trumpet jam ever.. this is the first recording I've heard that actually beats out the the Jazz at Lincoln Center one from They Came to Swing.
These cats have been practicing since they were 17, and Roosevelt was 17. For age, Roosevelt wins.
Alto soloist is incredible
Slide just ends it with “bye” lol
"This is the Dizzy Gillespie Band, this was 'Things to Come', bye". I love Slide Hampton lol
They right about The All Star Band! Justin Robinson on that yanagisawa sax killing it.
@Alessandro Villatoro I believe so my friend at 6:23 you can see yanagisawa on the ligature.
I played this song as a freshman in college. I was 2nd trumpet. It's a really tough song!
If the bass player makes a face like at 6:37 you know you've played some hip shit!
The bass sounds like upright one.
never heard that song played any better! (LCJO a distant second with faddis and wynton) Wow masters at work!! 4 trumpet solos and trade ins great Job!! i enjoyed it!
Stevy D, Smul, Roy, John Lee, Cyrusa, et al.... Groovin' Higher and higher!
that donna lee quote from robinson at 4:44 tho
what're you talking about
That’s one of dizzy’s backrounds, but I’m sure Charlie Parker or Dizzy borrowed it from one another
Tears of joy!
What the fuck!! What's goin on!! What is this!! It's Dizzy's legacy...
I fricken love this song. It just makes me so happy.
Y'all did the damn thing..
3:53... when you don't count on a trade smh. Roy gave him that face lol
What's a trade smh?
Esquilin Music yaaa I think he definitely felt like saying more but didn’t realize it was time to cut to half the amount of bars.
But also his phrase obviously didn’t sound finished... so I guess if I were playing alongside I’d let him finish OR try and compliment that phrase he played so it doesn’t sound awkward like it did here lol

So good, everyone playing their A game.

Burning!!!!!!!!!
RIP Hoy
Justin Robinson...wow...
I think one of the best performance of this fantastic song (in mine opinion)
Heard Roy quoting 'Planet Rock'?!? HAHAHA 3:51
Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!
Love the tone the bass player is getting from his instrument...
COOL! Before next concert you must tell the soloist to stay in line or ask them to draw a number . . . :-)
It even looks good when you switch to full screen.
The pianist is Cyrus Chestnut.

At 3:50 is a quote of Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express.
Spot on Laddie!
Wow, I didn’t know that existed. I immediately thought Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock, which I’m pretty sure what Roy might’ve been thinking about as well. Now I see who Afrika got it from!

6:10 weird way to hold a trombone but okay...
Looks like he's left handed so that makes sense for him.
@@libertydoc Sure but its just so disorienting that hes literally putting his hand through the tubing
It would make a bit more sense with a small bore trombone i think
weird comment, nerd
now that you've pointed it out I can't unsee it.

Erdman West III that is definitely not Claudio or Randy
