I really like this reworking of the Twit melodic theme. I’ve always explained Twit (the original recording) as “a cheerful song about a lonely relationship leading to a breakup.” The original starts with Hwasa’s lamentation, which you hear again as the climax of the song. But the mood is light in all other respects. Then, in a tacked-on scene in the MV, you see the resulting break-up. This is very reminiscent of how Hwasa had to patch-up Maria by putting a “correction” at the very end, basically as an afterthought. Unfortunately, the end result in the original Twit MV is that it ends with a whimper. It should now be obvious to everyone who has heard this reworked version and considered Hwasa’s own words on this “final” performance that her intention was better served by a more powerful theme embracing the tragedy. From the very beginning of the song, we get the ominous tones of this new theme. Then, at 2:44, the theme is reinserted and throttled-up to create a powerful contrast to the original brighter melody. This is the true emotion of Twit! Also, unlike a lot of reimaginings of MAMAMOO songs, this one is a very solid piece of composition. Finally, at 3:25, Hwasa’s body language delivers a gut punch. She is telling us, “Don’t take this thing too lightly. It is a pain from regret that will rock your world.” I can now confidently state that Twit (in its current orchestral incarnation), is a cheerful song that morphs into tragedy. It is about two “stupid people” (Hwasa’s words), unprepared not only for their inevitable breakup, but for the jarring moment when each will once again realize they are truly alone. And best of all, this newer arrangement gets the job done without a tacked-on segment at the end. No whimper here.
