Bought my first XJ in 2017 as my first car with 221k miles. Its no gem but i’ve still got it with 247k on it now. Loved it so much i bought a second one. Now i just cant decide which one to drive everyday
If you open the oil fill cap and look inside with a light and see ''TUPY'' stamped between cyl 3 and 4 it can verify that you have the better head. Thanks for sharing your awesome XJ, I hope you enjoy it!
They actually do tell you Fuel economy, and how many predicted miles you’ll get to the tank, along with outside temp, and some other cool features. You just need an oem center console. All XJ computers can take an overhead console, but you may have to do some rewiring to get it installed.
If it is a high mileage 4.0 I would change the water pump and thermostat along with the idler pulley and belt. Do a good flush of the heater core and radiator. You dont wont a leaking heater core on an XJ, Also peel back the passenger side carpet, most XJ'S leak from the blower motor seal or cowl, I've got repair videos on all that stuff.
I’ve been thinking about replacing the water pump and thermostat, I’ll have to add those other things to the list as well. Quick question: the last few times I drove it, there was smoke coming from the engine after driving for about 20-30 minutes, it smelled like burnt brakes but the Jeep was running at 210 so it wasn’t overheating, any idea what that could be? Thanks in advance!
@@KCars could be alot of things, start with noises. Are you hearing any belt or bearing noises? They can smell when they heat. Alot of times the valve cover leaks on tmto the exhaust manifold in the back by the firewall
No there’s no noises but the valve cover gasket is on my list of things to replace so hopefully that will help. One of my friends told me that it could also be a coolant leak from one of the hoses or a cracked radiator. Thanks again
If it ain't broke don't fix it just make sure your coolant is good and change your oil every 3 thousand miles or less. I have a 2001 XJ for the last 5 years.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." In my opinion, that's pretty dumb, cause there is a lot of things that wear out and need to be replaced, even if its not broken yet. Especially if it's not monitored by the ECM.
@@KCars I don't have an XJ, I have and 08 Jeep WK, but the things that I look out for would be the Serpentine belt, Idlers and pulleys, tensioners, Pumps and seals, parts of the steering and suspension (tie rods, boots ect), parts of the differential (Which I had to fix due to leaking pinion ring and seals), and before getting tires, get a tune up...unless tires are very bad. I usually take mine to the dealership, cause even though it's expensive I rather have it done right the first time. Mine runs good so far, but it's those little things that may destroy your vehicle some day that you should keep and eye and ear on, squeaks, grinds, and ticks (mine is starting to tick when starting to accelerate). I'm sure you already knew most of these but I'm just giving you a heads up, if you're planning on keeping your vehicle for another 100K miles like I am. Sometimes you feel like you're catching parts as they fall and fixing them, and most of these happened only within 15,000 miles of ownership so far, 145K to 160K miles. I had a heck of alot of electrical issues as well so look out for those. Still have 2 more years left of payments but after that going to do bigger diff gears and other improvements.
Don’t upgrade just replace the cooling system completely if possible that’s what I did and mine even in the currently 80 degree weather mine is running at about 160-170
71makocc ya that works I just don’t wanna have the high beam lever always in the “on” position just so when I turn the headlights on I don’t accidentally drive with the high beams on. Thanks for watching!
Man I'm sad cause I gave 1500 on a Jeep liberty and it ended up being a lemon. And there selling a 2001 jeep in my area for 3300 with 170,000 miles man nice jeep
Don't do anything with the cooling system. Just add a zj flan clutch and a good radiator like Mishimoto and you shouldn't have any issues unless your holding revs all day long
@@KCars yeah man keep the temperature stock I think it opens at 195 I honestly forget the stock thermo temp. But the 4.0 are ment to run hot 210 is completely normal. It can go above or below that but 210 is optimal
This was my first vehicle while in high school. Oh it bring back the memories. Loved my XJ but kind of wished it came with good MPG. lol
Definitely an awesome vehicle
my yj jeep wrangler got totaled sunday and I'm in high school so I feel your pain luke

I’ll definitely have to take a look. Thanks for watching!

Coolant is still on my to do list, seems like the actual drain plug is hard to get to? Do you have any tips on flushing the coolant? Thanks!

DeathHawk713 definitely with these older jeeps, do you have any suggestions on things I should replace? Thanks for watching!

Thanks! So I would replace the radiator, hoses, and what else?
Damn it I wish mine was a 4x4. I def need to do a 4wd swap
Krypton it’s definitely a useful feature
I have over 40 uploaded XJ repair videos I hope you check them out. Great deal on the XJ!
I’ll definitely have to check out your videos, thanks!
When your Jeep is off put your high beams on . It will turn off the LED lights and keep them from flickering

In other words when the Jeep is off put the beam lever in the high mode

Swap out the original brake fluid that's why your pedal is spongy
71makocc I’ll have to look into that, thanks!
Concrete?
