At 68 I’m a relatively new quilter. I began thinking about taking the plunge in 2020 so I’m a Pandemic quilter. I’m obsessed. I’ve always loved fabrics, having started to sew way back in middle school. This is a great video. I’m still worrying about seams and points. But I’m working through that and improving my skills. Love your easygoing way but with attention to detail. Thanks, Karen.
Things that make me go Grrrr. When I was a kid, I was tasked with cutting old clothes into squares using scissors and a CARDBOARD template. Needless to say, the squares at the end of the task were muuuuuccch smaller than the squares from the beginning.

That's how I started quilting with cardboard and scissors, but I drew the shapes on the back of the fabric!

I’m pretty new to quilting, and I made a quilt earlier this year using jelly roll strips to make a “braid”. I didn’t know all of the blocks needed to be the same size, lol. It was a logistical nightmare! I finally made it in rows, taking the largest block in that row and added two inches of background fabric to it…top and bottom. Then I added background fabric to each of the other blocks in that row to make them the same heighth as the biggest block. Then I spread them out on the floor and placed them in the most pleasing to my eye order. I cut background fabric to go in between them to complete the row. I did each row that way, sewed them together, and added more background fabric to the outsides edges much like a border. Amazingly, it came out square and just looking at the finished product, you really cannot tell it wasn’t planned this way. 😅🤣😂🤣
My coworker friend is a quilter and told me, a beginner, to do rectangles off set like a brick pattern. I'm a perfectionist so it worked out great that I didn't have to obsess over lined up corners
I have made charity quilts using differently sized orphan blocks. I used coping strips to make them all one size. The strips are the same color, to compensate for the scrappy colors of the blocks.

I love the quilting tips you provide. It has improved my quilting. I've even gone beyond putting charm packs together! Now I've gotten in to actual piecing. Though my favorite it still lawless quilting. I do it with my kids now to use up my scraps. My littlest loves making it a competition to see who comes up with the largest scrap block! (I never tell him I cut it down later)

Perfect timing. I have blocks made by another quilter that I'm to make a quilt top from. There are 2 different sizes of blocks...about a quarter inch difference. It's for charity, and the finished size of the quilt matters. Thank you for your help, Karen!
Sometimes there's a seam allowance that was too big, and by resewing it you can get that 8th or 16th you need. Ditto for a block that is slightly too big, but you don't want to lose a point, you can resew a seam a bit wider. I use this technique for pieced borders that are never exactly the right length! I agree with you, striving too hard for perfection makes what should be a pleasant activity stressful. Relax and do as well as you can, and you'll get better with experience.

I have started using starch on my fabric before cutting it has helped a lot. Especially if using smaller sizes
A few years ago I participated in a quilt block exchange. It was fun, but the blocks I received definitely weren't all the 9 1/2" squares they were supposed to be! I used the coping strips method to make them all the same size. I picked a different fabric for the coping strips for each block, to coordinate with the fabrics in the block. My husband told me I was having too much fun. Yes, it was a bit of a pain to do this and then cut them all to the same size, but it was also a lot of fun.

I wish I had had this video a few months ago but was relieved to know one of your first tips was to not worry about missing points because that was my worry but since it was just a quarter inch on each side of just three blocks out of 12, I trimmed them all the same size, sewed together and let sit for a few weeks. and now, if I look, I can find the missing points but in general. I'm okay with it. For the first time, ever, piecing, I'm mostly pleased! Now to stop worrying about what others (the quilting police - those doing the quilting) might think and send it off to be quilted.!!

It was great that you showed the strips in contrasting colors so we could see what you were discussing. But you never mentioned that if you used the same fabrics as your block, the "addition" is barely noticeable. ... I picked up an old favorite the other day and was reminded that I had added strips the same as the background and had forgotten all about it. 💖🌞🌵😷

Well, these are some very good tips. And I’m usually very good with math and spatial relations. But man, my head was spinning by the end; especially for that last one: setting the blocks with wonky strips.😵💫 I must be getting old, lol! 😂

Wow, where was this video 5 months ago when I had made a piles of blocks that were every size but the right one? I am fortunate to have a great LQS, Barn Door Quilts, that helped me figure something out to make them work. While the blocks aren't perfect, I finished it and am proud of it.

I'm about to donate a quilt to an Alaska quilt drive. It's my 4th ever quilt, and as with my previous quilts - it was full of learning opportunities and growth. Your video today is timely as one of my blocks came out smaller and I didn't want to cut down all the other blocks. Solution - upsize my little block. And soon, off it will go to Alaska! I love your tips and the links you provide. I bought a box at an auction. The quilt top was just squares, but most of the squares were not square or they were sewn on rather poorly. I tooj the quilt apart, squared up the blocks and found I had two sizes of blocks. I made one quilt with the larger blocks on the outside and the smaller ones on the inside. hmmm, what to do about where they came together.... perfect spot for a "border" of prairie points around the center blocks. The prairie points hid the awkwardness of the mismatch of the blocks.

By some miracle my first patchwork fabric came out exactly right. I just used scissors and marking pens to make my squares as I didn't know about rulers and rotary cutters. It was used for many years as a doona (continental quilt) cover. Twenty years later I just turned the patchwork front into a summer weight quilt that looks old and stunning. I had to add some to the edges as I went from a double bed size to a king size, but it worked well. I still had some bits of the fabric from the original project to use. I'm currently making pillow cases and hanging hand towels using jellyroll strips to "make" the fabric I want.

great tip about marking the sew line. I have done this a time or two. I have even had to do when I was just that short on a piece of fabric. Once I have adjusted for it in my seam allowance all is good again.

Over 25 years of quilting, and this the first exposure to coping strips. Wish I had known this when I put my “100 days” quilt together. I’ll need to watch the wonky technique a dozen times more to “get “ it, but cool. Thanks again.

I just gulp when I see that kind of wasteage
I found Karen in 2019 when my first quilt was off by so much I had to put a pocket on one corner! (Baby Quilt). I found Karen's tips on consistent sewing and pressing (as well as her encouragement). There are no shortcuts to avoid putting in the seat time to make cutting, sewing, pressing, material handling second nature. Also, I recommend making a test block on each new project--and before you cut everything out. The test block is your mini Quilt Lab. You will be able to evaluate how your thread, fabric, pressing choice and seam confluence can influence how your overall block finishes even if each patch is perfectly executed. Plus, you will also confirm that you read the cutting directions correctly before you've cut everything out!
Great idea! I was following a pattern in a book for a quilt many years ago and the center block size listed in the book was wrong! I had already cut all the block pieces out before I had started and went to sew the first pieces together and couldn’t get them to work, they needed to be 1/2” larger than what was listed! Thankfully I had extra fabric to cut from to make the quilt!

You’re THE BEST! I am in the middle of cutting up over 25 dress shirts that belonged to my son. I want to make a quilt out of them for his children for Christmas. I haven’t decided if I’m going to make houses out of them, as I think his children would like it a little more (you know, more relatable to them than a pieced quilt). I’m not a great sewer….but your videos sure help me! I don’t think I’ve ever watched one of your videos where I didn’t learn something or have an AHA Moment….thank you, I can’t imagine the time it takes to actually make one of these videos. I often make rectangles from old shirts, like 3 x 6 and make a subway pattern. You can make the blocks line up or not.

Oh I remember my first couple quilts, I thought that pressing was optional. Lol quarter inch seam really for me that is hard as stitch in the ditch. I have come a long way through videos as yours and just a couple more. I have gave my sister all of my knowledge lol and she has made several as well. Thank you again for sharing your knowlegde.
My first baby quilt was so sad...I think my cuts were fine, but my sewing and pressing...not so much. I found Karen's channel back in 2019 when I was searching for some help. She equipped me with many of the skills I needed to make quilting both enjoyable and successful.

It's a challenge figuring out the math for the first quilts. Just push on and learn for the next try.

Hello, Karen! I learn so much from you in your videos. Can you tell me what you use to creat your quilt graphics for your videos?
I would like to create an online class for teaching fractions using quilt block instead of pizzas or pies. I would love to know what program you use.
Question: What can I do? I made 20 or so blocks ALL different patterns (from a book that told me they would all be the same size when finished). I ended up making them all 1 size by adding a strip to the 2 adjacent sides only(the strips make a corner). I made the strips white like the background in the squares. They are supposed to have lattice strips around each which I did not do yet. SO, let me try to answer my question: Fix them next by adding: 2 more strips to the other 2 sides so they all have a white edge? The strips do not have to be of equal sizes?
Just be sure to center them before you trim them down
I cut a bunch of 2.5 inch squares out of several different charm packs for a project. Some were straight cut. Some were pinked measured to the peak and some to the valley. I have only made a few of these little four patches made of a half square triangles in opposite corners to solid pieces of fabric in the others. They are not all coming out right. I think not using fabric that is all cut the same way from the manufacturer and mixing them was not a great idea. I just stopped the whole project in frustration. I just got a new clear 1/4 inch foot hoping it will help.
Precuts always look like a good idea…but they can be so frustrating. Let it be or cut them down.

If you are starching your fabric, do it before you cut it. You can always cut them down then add sashing to make them the correct size.
