Spider Guard PLUS Ashi Garami (Single Leg X): Ankle Lock and Sweep (BJJ/Jiu-Jitsu/Judo)

- What if we combine the lasso from spider guard with ashi garami (aka “single leg x”)? Today we look at how to use the lasso to slow someone down from guard, off-balance them and then execute an attack series when they stand up. The spider guard allows us to use our legs to entangle our partner’s arms, and serves as both a guard retention tool AND a way to create kuzushi and submission entries. Ashi garami does the same thing on the lower body. We start with a basic entry into the spider guard from the closed guard, opting here for sleeve grips rather than one at the collar. Rather than just firing our legs into the lasso, we use a scissor guard and shin guard to maintain guard control as we weave our way into position. Once they stand, we use a collar grip on the gi and our second leg to either off-balance them with an overhead tomoe nage OR wrapping the leg into ashi garami. From the leg and arm entanglement, we can sweep - landing in ashi and ready to attack the straight achilles lock on the mat.

Great as always.. thanks!
🙏🏼
Thank you! 🙏
😊
I've been experimenting with a very similiar technique but instead I've gone straight to X-guard elevations with a lasso lace like in the video. I think it's such a powerful sweeping position as it takes away opponent's ability to post. Thanks for the great video as always!
Nice - yes the kuzushi is very strong 💪🏼 Thanks for watching!
I like to start with lasso tripod sweep, because people in lasso usually go backward,it that fails I went to overhook x guard
This is such a nice entry to Ashi Garami, I'm just excited to see more videos like these :D

Excellent explanation and video!
Thanks for watching!
Just worked spider guard/de la riva with Jin over at Workshop today! This is great stuff! Thank you
Solid!!
Hi Brian, love your videos. Do you have any competition effective ways to pull guard into lasso?
Can you do more vids of defenses of ashi garami?
👍🏼
