Steve Lukather is widely regarded within the industry as one of the great guitarists of all time... but he's also a very underrated vocalist. When he takes lead, his voice exudes the emotion of the songs with a passion that's just lacking today.
Yes ❣️ I absolutely adore Luke - I love his voice- it’s velvety and soothing. He once said that the band lacked that true “poet” in terms of songwriting (not that Paich wasn’t a fantastic songwriter- I think he was talking about the complex, deep lyrics) but I honestly think if the band had one, it was him! Lukather penned lyrics are the deepest, most poetic and heartfelt ones of all. So yes, amazing guitarist, totally underrated singer and lyricist/composer.
Toto was Jeff Porcaro's baby and in so many videos he was smiling. To me, he was smiling cause he was so very proud of Toto's work. RIP Jeff, Mike and Papa Joe ❤
Hi. I stumbled across this. Had to comment. I was the Dir. of Photog / Camera Operator on this. Got the call from a friend at CBS Records. Tommy Chong directed. One camera shoot, 16mm... small crew, empty house, some concept storyboard sketches to go by and 22 hours later, we wrapped. Must have played back the song over 30 times to get a variety of angles. The band was great... patient... talented. The original print looked a lot better, but that was 1986. No HD, no digital post production. I'll never forget it. (aka Jonathan West ASC)
Toto are up there, but The Beach Boys are arguably way more versatile. From Surf to Baroque to Lo-Fi and R&B to Progressive Pop to Soul, Yacht and Prog Rock to Synth Pop to New Wave. Not to mention the occasional Blues Rock, Hard Rock, Gospel, Country or Barbershop.
@axelkyster2642 Yes, they do. KIMBALL was the primary singer and the successor vocalists after him were recruited to serve that very purpose. Their first album displayed that clearly. Kimball sang 4 out of the 10 songs Paich sang 2 songs , Lukather sang 2 songs , Steve Porcaro sang one and they wisely opened up with the instrumental CHILDS ANTHEM. That debut album revealed how the band was laid out. Problem was after HOLD THE LINE the record company kept picking the softer tunes as singles . The band was pissed that 99 was chosen(as a single) over WHITE SISTER during the HYDRA era. Steve Lukather said it would've put them in with the arena rock bands at the time of 1979-80 period.
Dude is making that guitar cry man... nostalgic track brings back memories of wanting to fall I love...what am saying is there was alot of innocence in 80s music. And am glad to have grown up in the era..
You really can't go wrong when a bunch of veteran studio musicians cross paths while performing on other artists's albums and decide to create a "project" that just happens to yield a top 10 hit (Hold The Line). The side project eventually releases a multi-Grammy-winning album (Toto IV), making these studio musicians house-hold names. Every song in their catalogue us great. This is blue-eyed soul at it's best.
I'm a Millenial (b. 1984--yeah yeah, laugh it up, I know..) and nobody my age knows what "Blue Eyed Soul" means/was. I have to walk them through an "easily recognizable" artist, such as the Righteous Brothers and 'Unchained Melody' (which everyone knows) to explain what Blue Eyed Soul is. "So Blue Eyed Soul was before MTV. Nobody knew what artists looked like back in those days unless they saw an LP cover, or if there was a promotion flyer being passed around and the artists were featured on it. So; naturally, people thought the Righteous Brothers were Black, based on their deep voices and singing style, which more resembled that of a Black duo. As TV became more available in people's homes in the mid-1960s, people were shocked to see the Righteous Brothers as being two white guys who could sing like the brothers."
Wasn’t really a crossing paths or side project. The original core of the band (Porcaros, Lukather, Paich) went to HS together and had played in bands with one another in addition to doing studio work. The Porcaros played on a lot of Boz Skaggs tracks, and it was his suggestion that they all form up and do something together. The rest is, as they say, history.
This man is without a doubt the most talented man. The harmony between these men are incredible. The love this song play it all the time. Pure candy to my ears!
You gotta love the video, i mean it's like he picked up the phone, call all his buddies and was like "Yeah man, she left again, i already wrote a song about it, you wanna rock out?" I love it!
I 100% agree. It's a very haunting song for me, as when it would play quite frequently on Top 40 radio after I experienced a painful breakup with a girlfriend around that time.
At a store in 2004, this song played in the background . I raced toward the loudest speaker and tried to listen as intently as i could to memorize a snippet of any lyrics as I could, "it's not the same without your love" I kept repeating until I got home, after typing it into the website yahoo or Google I don't remember but it worked, the lyrics got me the name of the artist and song including the video poped up...I haven't let it go since, all I can remember was that this song was played briefly in the song charts growing up on the radio and that it explains emotions, feelings and speaks to my soul, I can't count the times I've listened to it as an adult it just seems to be a fabric of my existence. Thank you Toto for getting me through.
SAW THEM LIVE IN TULSA IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR, IM ONLY 27 AND NEVER GOT TO ENJOY THEM IN THE 80'S LIKE YOU ALL, BUT THEY PUT ON A GREAT SHOW WITH JOURNEY!!
This song just popped up in my head from a childhood memory. Decided to Google it. Wow didn't even know that it was song by the amazing band Toto. Beautiful song.....
You feeeel them. Thanks for pointing that out. Jeff had that ability to pull emotion out of shit. That backbeat is so far back.....John Bonham would be impressed.
Wall-to-wall carpets. Very American. Very 80's. I love this track! The production is solid. Backing choir is superb. Only thing missing is Michael McDonald doing a small vocal cameo in the middle or something like that. And that melancholic guitar at the end - top score! Still, it brings out the sadness in me. The best tracks often do.
TOTO- What can I say.. This BAND will always be my all time FAV next to Steely DAN. Its such a shame that they didn't have a lasting audience but for Europe & Asia. . .

This song gets overlooked sometimes. Its one of my faves. Luke gave a soulful vocal and his playing was on spot. However I think he's better looking now.
I actually liked how his look kept changing through the years and that he had so many different haircuts and styles. Georgy Porgy Luke though-overwhelming heartthrob phase
I'm not from the US but I've visited many times. For me ToTo seems like the perfect US band. It is so all things American. The rock, the blues, the soul, the 80's etc.
the wrong thing is, they are far not enough recognized as the best rock/hard rock band ever, cos they are. I prefer various metal bands on a daily basis, but it`s more like "there are bands and there is Toto"..

While I've always thought it looked awkward when a guitarist/bassist wore his/her instrument above (or below) his/her waistline, I certainly don't discount Mike's musicianship.
The porcaro Family oh my god wat a wonderful gift .

Agree much. He’s such a great musician.

I hope someone can find that original print and rescan it and remaster this video!
Omg!! how are they in person though..?
I'll be over you is also one of the best songs of toto and I know I'm 20 years pf age but who cares..😒
I just found myself singing this today out of the blue. GREAT Song!
Toto is by far the most versatile band ever... from hard rock to pop to soul to a bit of R&B.

Great range for Steve!!! The songs fit the voices. Including Bobby Kimball when he "cuts in." (in other songs )
Toto is one of my favorite bands! I love Steve Lukather. He pulls at heartstrings when he sings, and his guitar solos are so full of emotions too..

The guitar solo on this song is one of Steve's finest. Beautiful. Kinda has that Japanese flute feel.
God the chord progressions in this song........I don’t think I’ve ever heard something that made my heart ache so much.
