SOM | LGBTQ2+ National Monument | Animation

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is among five finalists in a competition to design Canada’s LGBTQ2+ National Monument, which will pay tribute to Canada’s Indigenous Two-Spirited and LGBTQ2+ communities. Their proposal, named Bapiiwin, establishes a place for contemplation while celebrating diversity and honoring survivors of the LGBT Purge.
Our animation shows how the assembly of stainless-steel wands, each representative of flag poles stripped of their flags, could be explored from multiple pathways, symbolizing the many ways towards justice for the LGBTQ2+ community.
While watching the animation, we suggest turning the sound on, as the soundscape accompanying the visuals furthers a deeper understanding of the project.
