  • Happy Halloween!
I know I'm cutting it close but I got sick half way through editing.
Koudelka is a fantastic game that very few people have played and many more should. It's a prequel to the Shadow Hearts games (I like the Shadow Hearts games and all but I feel they got very anime but the third game; Shadow Hearts: From The New World there is a giant bipedal talking cat and a Mariachi with a machine gun guitar that's also a flame thrower! That's a level of weebtardation that is hard to come back from IMO) I digress. I hope you enjoy the video, subscribe if you want.
    Songs used:
-Kiyoharu from Shin Megami Tensei IV by Ryota Kozuka Kenichi Tsuchiya Toshiki Konishi.
-Echo Thru The NIght by Show-Ya sung by Steffanie (also the outro).
-True from Silent Hill 2 by Akira Yamaoka.
-Kiss Twice from Koudelka by the wonderfully talented Hiroki Kikuta.
-Self from Shin Megami Tensei IV by Ryota Kozuka Kenichi Tsuchiya Toshiki Konishi.
-Dead from Koudelka by the still wonderfully talented Hiroki Kikuta.

I've been watching a long play of Koudelka and I gotta say, this game is trully a masterpiece, is insanelly well written, the suttle humor and arrogance characters have while talking is amazing. I would love to have played this as a child. Guess I'll have to emulate it.

The writing and characterization in Koudelka is better than most modern games. I find it impressive since there is both a language and cultural barrier with Sacnoth being a Japanese company. I'd highly recommended playing it and even the Shadow Hearts games even though the writing in them is a massive down grade.

I have always really enjoyed this game. I didn’t want to pay the $300 plus for NA copy so I went the JP version and console. Was 1/5th the price of NA edition. Game is in English with menus in Japanese. Also, from what I have read, the Shadowhearts trilogy are only sequels to Koudelka in an alternate reality, not direct sequels.

Persona 5 isn’t a grind, it’s all content. With natural progression I felt completely overpowered on my first run. Skipping days can be annoying and the story feels like it gets worse as it goes… But in some instances it depends on what you know about the game. People say in Dark Souls, they grind for souls and levels. But I know enough about it that I can start fresh with nothing and complete it without farming anything.

Back in 2010 I was into retro video game collecting. I was going to thrift stores every week finding ps1, gamecube, dreamcast games all the time. So one day I stumble upon a bunch of PS1 games on a cd bin at goodwill. Koudelka was in the bin and it was in really good condition. I play it and it was a good game. I wish I didn't sell my copy to a game store but it is what it is.

@6:00 Actually, MOST JRPGs don't require or even expect you to grind for hours, at least once you got into the SNES and later eras. Most JRPGs are designed that if you fight the majority of battles on your way to your objectives, you will easily be leveled enough to take on the main story's bosses with mild difficulty. Now, if you want to see _everything_ the game has to offer, then yes, some grinding and leveling is going to be necessary but these are mostly just for bragging rights and very rarely have any additional story, lore, etc attached to them. The main exception to this, is that JRPGs typically expect you to gain 2-3 levels at the very beginning of the game, but once you do that, just kill everything you come across naturally as you wander the game's world and you should be fine in most games.

Probably sounds familiar because you played Shadow Hearts, which this game is linked to. There's a character named Koudelka in that game, and it's the same character in this game, and in fact, I'm pretty sure that Nementon Monastery is the location of the abbey in this game.

The "tactics style combat" is a more advanced version of the battle system found in Ultima 3-5. SInce as I recall, Koudelka's combat is all on one level, it's closer to Ultima than Tactics.

  • @astropgn

I did play this game back in the day. I didn't know how to speak English back then, but I was able to progress until almost the end. Until you find a boss that cast a laser at you. You need a necklace, but I didn't know that. And from that part, with my build, I was soft locked. I couldn't go back to get the necklace, and I couldn't progress. Only a decade later that I watched a gameplay and learned what I had to do.

A lot of RPG's look like games I want to play, until I see that it is turn based. I just want action, instead of waiting my turn and give potion of healing or magic. Sorry to say, but I just hate that shit. I want to be able to beat the shit out of my enemies once I get really good at it. And to be able to dodge attacks from my opponents. These RPGs are always like, do this and then that, wait your turn. Bla bla bla. You are more busy scrolling through overcomplicated menus and lists of items instead of just playing the fucking game. Never understood why people like that shit. I mean, it was new back in the nineties specially for the masses, but now 25 years later they still make this shit. There is a time you experiment with gameplay features. Specially in a time were going from 2D to 3D was a new big step for animation and control mechanics. But that time has long passed. If these games were action instead of scrolling through menus I would consider it. Because a lot of these games look great, and might have good story lines. But with these mechanics I am not even thinking about trying. Unfortunately..
