Whenever I clean my pens I really appreciate how convenient the eyedropper mechanism is. I only take about one minute to disassemble and rinse my Opus 88.

My favorite fountain pen I have the pleasure of owning. Always writes and never leaks!

That little upside down hack sounds really neat, I'll have to try that next time I'm refilling the pen. The time it takes for ink to make its way through the feed is my primary annoyance with any eyedropper pen or even cartridges (though that hack won't work on those). With the Opus, I've been trying to work around that issue by turning the pen upside down, and then pushing the rod down to force ink into the feed. That doesn't always work so well, though.
I also like to tip an entire ink sample right into the barrel, bypassing the eyedropper. Works as long as you're pretty sure that the sample is in the 2ml range (I believe the nominal max ink capacity is 3.5ml, including the feed), though you might lose a drop or two that decide to stick to the vial and don't make the jump over the rim.

Can you write with the cap posted on an Opus 88, given that the safety valve must be open a turn or two for ink flow?

If it actually operates a valve it’s not really a “blind cap”. It’s a control knob. A blind cap is a cap over a control to stop it being operated accidentally.
