All I’m gonna say is before the finish, I still loved it. After the checkered, I put it my top 5 races. I still find myself rewatching it. All the memories I have made going to Atlanta over the years, this one topped it.

That entire race was a 2000s IndyCar pack race in disguise. Cars were able to get massive runs, pass, and clear for the lead, whether it was 2 wide, 3 wide, or 4 wide. Drivers were more in control over their own destinies than at Daytona. The cars were tough to drive and always at their limit. Take the finish away, and this is still a 9/10 race. Remove the lap 2 crash and the single-car spins and it becomes a 10/10.

I mean I feel like it had something for everyone. There were a lot of wrecks yea, but I wouldn’t say it was an all out wreckfest. There were good long enough green flag runs to feel like a professional race, without getting to the point where they all go single file for 40 laps making everyone wanna fall asleep. I had just gotten off a 12 hour shift and got home just in time for the race to start. I was dead tired and any other race I woulda been knocked out 25 laps in. But this one I was hooked sitting on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding the whole time. Not sure if I could call it my favorite race I’ve ever watched (that being the 2016 phoenix fall race as I’m a bowman fan who was at the race), but this is definitely one I’m gonna show my kids

1:17 I agree with that, but that automatically excludes virtually every superspeedway race since they put on plates. What is the point of watching lap 64 of the 2007 Daytona 500 or the 2000 Winston 500? Just a random group of cars who can't separate from each other.

I put the Atlanta race on when I got home at midnight intending to watch it while I was packing for a move, thinking I'd last about an hour before passing out. I got through packing as much as I could then sat down expecting to eventually fall asleep. Except I didn't. The race kept me up. I couldn't even fast forward through the commercials because apparently fubo doesn't let me do that even on a delayed watch. But whatever, the race was really good and I wanted to finish it. And I did around 4AM. Still had to wake up at 8AM for the movers. So yeah, pretty sure it was a great race.
As for hosting the All Star race, sure whatever I don't care. If they want to make the All Star race really weird wherever they hold it they should loosen up some of the rules. Let teams take off the tapered spacer, or take off the diffusers or splitters, then run the race at any track and it'll at least be interesting.

I think of this race as a really good football game. Yes I know, you should not compare NASCAR to stick and ball sports, but hear me out. Football is constant action and then stopping and then action. This race was kind of that flavor. I think this race was already being heralded as a great race before the finish even occurred, its just not the same as some other great races in the past, and thats fine.
I also think the rewatchability of this race improves given you can actually skip cautions and commercials on rewatches. Ive been rewatching races on youtube for years and caution filled races do not seem to ever get too bogged down as much as they did in real-time
Was this a 92 Hooters 500? A 03 Carolina Dodge Dealers 400? A 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at the Glen? No. And thats a good thing because not every great race is going to be the same. In fact, as you compile the great races together, they will all be different, and creating a catalogue of how different these races are, how many different flavors you get will make the compilation all the better. Because what makes these races great is entirely in our own perspectives.
The 2024 Ambetter 400 was a great race, but in a different way than what makes other races great, too

An ATL All-Star Race is something I've never considered before, but definitely is a fun concept. Good market, solid crowd figures, popular racing, it ticks all the boxes. My own personal idea is that the All-Star should be held at a rotating slew of southeast short tracks like Hickory, Langley, Five Flags, etc. Instead of wasting a million dollars in repaving the LA Coliseum every year, NASCAR should use that surplus cash to build some temporary stands and repave these short tracks and revitalize them for years to come with just one weekend of top-level action

It felt like an ARCA race to me. Not one person was using their brain. No reason for a pileup before Lap 10. Denny and Joey were driving like they didn't have spotters. Cindric made it 4 wide for no reason (it was a breathtaking 2 laps but WTF was that move?) Plus, 2 cars crash entering the pits and no yellow. The finish was the only think that saved the race.

  • @officialjfendi

I'd say the latter half of the race (especially during stage three) has probably produced some of the most exciting superspeedway action I've seen in general, and by far the most exciting I've seen in person. It was really cool especially during stage three I was able to get some really nice shots with my Nikon of cars going 3-4 wide and struggle with handling off of turns 3 and 4... like you could tell from the photos that some intense racing was going on. I thought the race itself was exciting, and I actually didn't realize one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history just happened (even though I got a from behind, slightly shaky burst sequence of the finish) as I was at the turn 4 grandstand at the time. But yeah, I would say this race was great regardless of the mesmerizing finish, definitely wouldn't say the best race period, but a very solid and enjoyable race :D

Yes, a good finish makes a “bad” to “ok” race tolerable or even nostalgia inducing. The flip side to that and a good counter video would be a bad finish ruining a great race, whether that is a rain out, caution in last few laps to end under yellow, etc. I think there is also something to say about “who” wins to make a finish good. Point being, and yes apples to oranges but I will watch the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix time and time again, which is basically a common Red Bull trotting out to a big lead and Sebastian winning which was common in that aero era of the V8’s. It’s only really notable considering the championship implications, any other race and no one bats an eye.

New Atlanta is better than Daytona and Talladega these days. The other pack races have become so predictable, the manufacturer alliance storyline has gotten old and they don't feel like packs these days - it's really just 2 lines of cars with an occasional 3rd line that screws over one of the other lines. At Daytona and Talladega, getting out of line is a death sentence for a driver's next 20 laps. At Atlanta, drivers could recover and fight back when they got out of line. The green flag pit cycle in stage 2 was actually interesting as well.
Part of Atlanta's fun comes from the aged surface for sure. The 2023 races were a huge improvement over the 2022 races, and last month's race was better than both from last year. But I think Atlanta's shape plays a huge role as well. The dog leg seemed to present a reset for every driver, so each lap told a different story.

I've been sitting on row 1 behind the flag man since 98. I have the greatest moments in Ihistory where I have been in the picture as a background figure. I will say the 24 race was my all time favorite. Atlanta has been a stretch of a race for years. It was my sons first race so I was excited it was action packed. I haven't attended a race at Atlanta since 2016 since I was now working for general tire racing.
After working in the industry will you understand why some just disappear. Im not saying its rigged, but as someone on the outside looking in it was magical, then the role was reversed and I saw debt and lies surrounded by drama. I loved the career but in 2022 I was ready to leave the grind. In 2024 I finally got the courage to become an outsider yet again, bit with a different perspective on the logistics and how the media and event management creates the magic

All races are about the finish. Leading the last lap is what matters most. Stage racing changed a lot but not the fact the last lap is the most important. Cars could run single file all day then come to the line 36 wide for the win and yes it would be considered a great race not just a great "finish". If they all sent it on the last lap for the win which is what all fans want to see their driver and all other drivers do. Also I am one of the few who think all races are great races because if those races were not run Id have to find something else to do and I would rather watch a fan voted boring race than any other sport because these cars, these teams, and drivers will always be great to me. Now dont take that as me loving the NextGEN car to death but its what we got and at least its not the COT....the one car that actually made me go watch Football on weekends. Wheeew glad that didnt last long...about as long as this comment no one is sure to read or agree with. Thanks for the great stuff Double B.

Finally someone notable is pointing out that a good finish doesn't mean the race is good. Good finishes are way easier to come by (and manufacture) then a good race. A Couple other things.
Another important factor is *who* wins. Daniel Suarez, a dude everyone likes and is a bit of an underdog. Ricky Craven, a MASSIVE underdog, Tony Stewart beating Denny Hamlin, like that one's just obvious, right? Now say Kyle Busch won the Atlanta race, or Denny beat Tony out of the way to win Sonoma...would people love it as much?

    • @JMSF32

2003 Darlington 400 will always be my favorite finish. The whole race is pretty good, I have seen it fully 2 or 3 times. I think even if Kurt won it'd be beloved. No one really cares about the Talladega finish that was just as close because it was Jimmie Johnson who won at his peak domination, and it felt a lot more manufactured, like I do about new Atlanta. I just couldn't get into this race because it all felt so...fake. Good finish or not. I kept trying to watch it but wanted to do other things, so I would.
As you noted the races with big wrecks, like the 2002 Aaron's 312. I'll be honest, I love that race. I've seen it at least 3 times fully. It's such an anomaly that we'll probably never see again and to see teams try their hardest just to get wrecked cars on the track is pretty cool. Hell even trillion-caution races like 2005 Busch Series Martinsville or 2007 Nationwide Series Memphis I love to watch and have seen 3 times each. Also the rain races at Montreal and Mid-Ohio. There's something to these "disaster" races that are not really good races per se, but are absolutely worth watching fully.

The last few laps of the '79 Rebel 500 were awesome, even for those of us who couldn't stand Jaws.

Superspeedway style races are not good races but yes you get good finishes but you literally just waiting for for that and big one at those tracks

Exactly this race was God awful. I turned it off after they bragged that they only tore up 95% of the field what a disgrace. They don't race in NASCAR anymore it's entertainment. When I want to see racing I turn on F1, IndyCar, IMSA, WEC really anything but WWECAR

    Thank Christ.
The racing was poor. People couldn’t pass. I don’t understand why people are lauding new Atlanta the way they are when 1997-2021 Atlanta was leagues better not only in speed but on track excitement
It pains me knowing how good new Atlanta would race with the intermediate next gen

@@simoneburini4036 people were stuck in that group and couldn’t progress forward.
It’s exactly what haters think Daytona is.
