I got a new clutch plate for my Unimog 404 Diesel. So I decided to put the engine back in and the cabine back on in 1 night. So I worked till 4AM in the morning. And my Unimog was running again!

When I did work on the UPS package car fleet, I replaced a LOT of clutches,,, when the diesel powered, medium duty units came out.
The ceramic puck clutch design wore the flywheel really bad, because the drivers slipped the clutch,,,
The remedy was to use bi-faced clutch plate,,,
Ceramic on the pressure plate side.
Kevlar on the flywheel side

With regard to the original steering column: nope, that won't work. Tried that once when taking the cab off and tore up the bottom of the cab. You really have to remove the steering housing completely ;)
