  • Laura Lopez Honorez obtained her PhD from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2007, and after being being a Postdoc in Madrid University, Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, she got appointed as a FRNS Research Associate at ULB in 2016. She works in theoretical physics in a research field at the interface between Particle Physics and Cosmology. Her research is mostly focused on dark matter models and signatures from the early universe till today.
Did you know that visible matter only represents 5% of the total matter-energy content of the Universe? How did we get to this conclusion? This result is based both on observations and on the theoretical developments in Cosmology that begun in the early 19's. I will briefly go through the Big Bang theory and the observations confirming such theory.
Among the matter content of the Universe, 80% shall be made of "dark matter". Dark matter would interact very feebly with light and can not be a particle that we already know of. This conclusion is again supported by compelling cosmology and astrophysics data that I will discuss. The exact nature of dark matter is still a mystery today. What are the candidates for dark matter and how are we looking for them? I will guide you through the current status of the worldwide research in this field.
