After a decade of consistent journaling, I'm sharing the invaluable lessons I've learned in this video. I've learned about the nature of memory, the fallibility of my judgments, the importance of repetition, and, most importantly, that content needs to come before form. I discuss building habits, self-improvement, Bullet Journaling, living according to your principles, and a little bit of Stoicism.

You never really know the extent of what goes on in your mind until you try to capture it on a page. Props to you for the consistency!
Writing, in general, and journaling, in particular, is one of the artistic manifestations of who we are.
I've been journalling for 7 years and counting, and I've also thought about the things you've said. Memories ARE fragile. Things will come and go. When I feel like "it's the world against me" ( sorry for the exaggeration ), I will write my journals for hours until I feel good about myself. Then, years later, these rushed emotions seem small and insignificant.
I started journalling using a normal pencil and a small notebook, after years of trying to keep up with the trend on the Internet (bullet journalling, using expensive grid notebooks from muji, buy colourful pens, etc.), I stopped journalling because it was a hassle. After that, I slowly pick myself up and buy a cheap and decent looking single line notebook. Rather than being materialistic, I stick with what I have and haven't stopped journalling until now.
Thank you for enlightening everyone!
I have been journaling for 19 years, and I haven't given much thought as to what I have learned from it. So thank you for making this video; I am now asking myself what journaling has taught me.
That's the longest I've ever heard of someone journaling consistently
Then, it is not significant bringer of change in a person’s life? In and of itself. I mean, unless you then infer over it and consciously bring out lessons, it just…happens and fades into the background? Because I’ve been looking to it as something that can really help. And that I will feel that help.
@@aniruddhnls Why bother about the analysing, reflecting and all that? Why not enjoy the process of keeping a journal in itself? Anyway it does bring change in us over time. Or at least, it'll definitely help us at the present moment to replenish our energy and clear our minds even if we don't reread our journals to find the ultimate lesson that we've learnt from it.
This channel is what UA-cam should be for. Keep up the amazing work!
I love that last part. Content >>>> form; what it makes you feel >>>> the actual thing. Best life advice.
Journalling impacted me a lot. Seems like it's more than just writing on notebook pages. It's a way for you to reflect and somehow meditate.
Great video as always! For me the greatest benefit of journaling (doing it consistently for almost 40% of my life) is the realization of ups and downs. All the fears, the happiness, the depression... everything is cyclical in a way, and I find a lot of comfort in that idea. My 15 year old self was pretty happy, unlike my 20 year old one, but became happier again at 25... Also the worst part about journaling is seeing things that you have been trying to achieve for almost a decade, and still having trouble with them like being constant or intentional.
Well, now I do have do reread my old journals from 1985.❤
Jared hi 👋🏽 I’m new to your channel and just completely absorbed by you and how you present information. I have always loved journaling but I went through a pretty traumatic life event that made me not want to dig into my feelings. I am now back on my journey and have found your videos to be very relaxing and helpful. So thank you. New subscriber here 💫
I’m glad to have you here!
Great topic! I've been journaling more or less consistently for the past 7 years. It is something I now consider to be necessary for my survival. It's like a hygiene routine for me, as important as brushing my teeth twice a day. I completely agree with all the lessons you've listed, especially the one about repetition. This is something I discovered recently while reading one of my older journals from a couple of years ago. Apparently, it took me a couple of rounds of repetition and similar experiences to shape some of the core principles I now live by. The process of constant evolution is mesmerizing, and journaling is so helpful in capturing this. One more lesson I would add is the lesson of trust. Some of the older entries that were written in the midst of my depressive episodes I now read with a deep sense of appreciation for my past self. Whenever I read them, I'm reminded that I can trust myself. I navigated some of the episodes better than I give myself credit for. I didn't see it back then, but my current self sees it clearly. So, for me journaling is a number one tool for building confidence and self-trust. As always, great video! Love how clear and precise you are in delivering your ideas. Keep up the great work!
Lately I have been writing a Daily Done Diary and a (Philosophy/Documentation) Journal. Working on a better name for that second one. The diary is a bullet list of things I have accomplished in that day. Education progress, how much writing/reading I did, workouts, socials/events/friends, networking/emails etc. Just digital.
My journal is written 3 4 times a month on the computer and then I actually re-write into a physical notebook. I do this because I personally find writing and thinking easier to do on the computer and handwriting is tedious but I like creating a sentimental and personal object. Journal is for life events that I feel like are significant in my life and I will write my contemplations on them.
I'm still experimenting and figuring out what works for me but I've been enjoying writing. I have discovered qualities of myself and what I value in life. It's also easy to feel like you've not done a lot in a day, most days, but when I look at a month or several months back I realize I've done A LOT.
Such a great video thank you :> love listening to you talk about stuff that concerns me
thank you for this video. I have been inconsistent with my journaling and this video has given me ideas to ponder on
Jared you have become one of my favourite creators online. I'm ready to be better. Thank you
Thank you for this video.
My form keeps changing too. I on and off go in between gratitude journaling and regular journaling, sometimes I have sections of movie and tv show reviews, some have drawings and diagrams, some are written in nice Moleskin notebooks while others are in comp books
This is fantastic. I too have been journaling since high school. But effectively utilizing and organizing all that data is its own skillset. Ive been meaning to make a video on that topic myself. Great video!

I think about the famous journals we have by important historical people and then sometimes wonder if one day, with the rise of journaling, we will have a history written by the "unimportant" people, and if we will find within those some very mundane thoughts and actions that would eventually culminate into big changes in the world and be able to trace all that into a coherent narrative finally told by the people and not the leaders.
I find that the greatest thing about journalling is how it helps with self-knowledge. For example, I've always thought of myself as someone who didn't worry much about anything and who was particularly relaxed about money. My journals tell a very different story!
Hey! Just let you know that you are making great content!
Another banger 💯
I’ve repeating this here from a reply. “Then, is journaling not a significant bringer of change in a person’s life? In and of itself. I mean, unless you then infer over it and consciously bring out lessons, it just…happens and fades into the background? Because I’ve been looking to it as something that can really help. And that I will feel that help.”
I'm obsessed that something is missing when I trying to write my emotion and thought.... That makes me hate it
Hey Jared, do you have any videos on remembering and integrating what you’re reading (eg note-taking, memorizing arguments)?
I would have loved an example of a belief you altered...as you said we like to believe we're consistent 😅
Thanks for this you have made me ask What have you learned? ❤
To all those struggling to make it a consistent habit, just 1. Buy a new note book doesn't matter what kind. 2 Get a pen that just glides over the page so your thoughts flow naturally. 3. Try to do it the same time every day eg just before bed or in the morning with coffee 4. Don't edit yourself use bad words 😅 5. Don't worry about grammar and spelling 6. If you can't think of anything on a particular day just write I AM GRATEFUL ❤ but commit to writing at least that every day...et voilà before you know it, it will be YOUR BEST FRIEND.
I was wondering if you could expand on the repetition point? What are some things you can journal about that can change the "hue" of your mind to be more positive?
Hi Jared. Im not sure if you'll read this. I hope so. I always revisit your channel just to hear you talk regardless of what topic. how you articulate stuffs, its very insightful and mind-opening. I wish that you might consider to do some kind of podcasts in future. Again, thank you for keep creating the content that you make and share your thoughts on them.
Nice Barretts shirt, are you in the Austin area?
Yes I am!
In every one of your videos, that beard is getting better and better.
I experienced a significant concern while journaling and have yet to find a solution. The concern is related to privacy.
I agree that the handwritten word has advantages, but sometimes the content is generated during times of depression or anger. Sometimes the feelings fade quickly but the emotions at the time of journaling may be strong.
If someone were to read the journal after my passing, they could form an impression based on some very limited, and emotionally charged, information.
I haven’t found a way to secure the information unless I convert to a password secured Word document. I feel like I’ve lost an important part of journaling when I can’t put pen to paper. Has anyone else had that concern?
Maybe in your will, say to chuck them in the trash?
Jared do you or have you read any manga?
