Insightful stuff. We're schooled to think "No Pain No Gain," but running slower really is the more intelligent option.

I started running with couch to 5k, which is a fantastic way to get running but it instilled in me the idea that you should progress from run/walks to running non-stop. I was not only doing my easy runs too fast, but I absolutely refused to stop and walk the hills or take walking breaks on longer runs.
Consequently I got achilles tendonitis and did my first half marathon horribly overtrained and exhausted.
Now I'm training for a 50k, I know that walking and running slow are an essential part of doing ultras.
I'm a slow runner overall and at first, keeping my pace slower than 7min/km was really hard as I couldn't maintain good form and it just felt ploddy and clumsy. But the more I ran at that pace, the more I improved and now I can float along quite happily, and not care how many times I am overtaken :)
Running slowly is a skill like any other. It takes patience snd practice, but now I LOVE my long easy runs, they're the best part of my week :)
    Happy running everyone!

Oh, another tip that really helped me is to run for time not distance.
I love being out running so much, but for some reason I would always think "if you speed up a bit, you'll finish the distance sooner". I think it came from the competitive part of me who wanted to prove to myself (and my ego) that I was improving and could run faster. Or sometimes I was just not feeling it due to tiredness or bad weather or just being super busy and stressing over taking too long..
Whatever the reason, running for time solved that issue for me! :)

OHH LEE is that you???? You’ve transformed !!! Yep great advice though, even for those of us who know this, it’s still so easy to fall into the trap of just a bit too hard anyway so we need to be reminded!!
