Same use of people's fears to be seen to be doing something. 'Knife crime' is the latest manipulation. Short term political decisions often have longer term unintended consequences. "Mad" can mean a lot of different things, but I'm not convinced that Trump is really detached from reality. Rather, he believes that he can impose his will on reality. When he says something obviously untrue, it's not because he's confused about whether it is true. It's because its will benefit him if enough people behave as though it is true. I think we probably all understood that when you are a capricious billionaire you can get away with this in your own circle - you are surrounded by people who are dependent on you, and so they'll pretend you are right because their salary depends on it. Whatever you say is true, people will pretend is true and try to make true. But Trump's astounding trick is that he's taken this effect and applied it to an entire country. The deal he's done with his base is: "The truth doesn't matter. Agree with me and I will empower you." That's not necessarily explicit, and the people who accept the deal aren't always doing so consciously, but it's certainly the transaction that is going on. Which is why I don't think he's mad - mad people perceive reality in a warped way, they don't try to strategically warp reality for their own benefit.
Agree. He's not mad (nor bad), he's smart enough to tap into the mood of a nation and get into power, and then shape reality to achieve his goals of tax cuts, or whatever best benefits him. That's not madness, that's just being smart enough to know how to play the game.
I think you (Jim Farrand) have expressed perfectly clearly the most likely truth of things. Both you and TheOneAndOnlyMe are bang on the button. My penny's worth would be that if the only thing that matters to an individual is money, and becoming rich (and/or famous) seems to be the modern 'ideal', then surely it doesn't matter what you do or who you tread on or how you treat others as long as you reach this goal. Add to that the perceived fear that that individual is somehow losing something ('freedom' - in all it's possible permutations - is the most likely) then you have the perfect combination for manipulation and self-serving. You blinker yourself because this is how you get what you want right now, to hell with anyone else (people don't even have to be racist, just selfish). This is, sadly, how people allow themselves to be corrupted.
You say that as if the two are mutually exclusive. He's always been a monster. It's just that now, his ego and dementia have grown so enormous that what little grasp on reality he once had is long gone.
You seem to have missed the point. And did you mean "UK professors"? You say the man "speaks like a layman"? What professional jargon were you expecting? UA-cam is a general discussion platform. We all understand that "mad" is shorthand for any number of types of cognitive or personality defects, and "bad" is shorthand for any number of moral or ethical failings.
It never was particularly sane but the lunatics have taken over the asylum again. It happens quite often, throughout history. Trump announces that he'll pour half a trillion of taxpayer's money into an AI-driven surveillance state while people are dying because they can't afford healthcare. I think he qualifies as both.
I suppose my question is - he may be mad, and he is definitely bad, but is he necessary? America genuinely does have one of the world's most unequal societies - their Gini Coefficient of 46 is far higher than most other G20 nations - and a huge problem with racial pay inequality. Nothing in the last 40 years or so of American politics suggests they are capable of self-organising to correct this - it is simply too large a system and the vested interests too entrenched. While sadly I think Trump will actually make this worse, there is an argument that nothing short of a political hand grenade could make a dent in the overall direction of the US economy.
It should correct through meritocracy. The problem is the US education system, it's too expensive so only a few get opportunities to flourish. In the US you have to hustle to move up in society.
The power he has and the power he will grab will allow him to achieve many things but definitely not what the voters who voted him in wanted ,however before they come to recognise this it will be too late and it is probably too late now.
I wonder if the fear of communism in the post WW2 years is now so deeply ingrained that anything that is not pure individualism is rejected with extreme force. And that can only drive more and more inequality. If the system can’t change that, then I would fear that something will inevitably happen to change the system. And that change would be very extreme and costly. For the world, not just the US.

Sadly I think the rot and corruption is SO deep in US society that even if Trump pops his clogs in the next four years there will be someone equally bad to carry on. And if Trump manages to survive I think he will be "reelected" for a third term or possibly for life. A GOP congressman has just in the last day or so suggested an amendment to the Constitution to cover that. A true Dictator.
I saw that mooted change. Fortunately it's a constitutional one so requires 2/3 of Senators to vote for it, and 38 state legislatures to pass it. So while not impossible, highly unlikely.
@@matthewmitchell6899 I agree but what if republicans simply decide not to bother with congress any more and just allow Trump to govern by decree? Do you think that could happen? I know it isn’t legal but is it possible?
I actually think the more pertinent question is are his supporters mad or bad. After all, he'd just be another rich old bigot with limited power without them.
He certainly isn't qualified to hold any office under the US Constitution, 24th amendment, section 3
@soereng8305: there is a conspiracy theory that the person the GOP wanted to run was Vance. But no one would vote for him so they let trump run knowing of his dementia and cognitive decline. They figure at some point he will decline and have Vance invoke the amendment.
US empire is not coping well with the loss of sole superpower status
He’s not just mad or bad. He’s grotesque.
You're too kind.
I would say:
It's sad, the guy is both mad and bad.
"If you believe absurdities you can commit atrocities" - it is the things Trump and many people in America believe that results in this madness - religion, capitalism, individualism and the mother of all spoiled brat syndromes
Your talking about Biden ? Obviously it Biden's support for Israeli genocide that bothers you or is it his inability to discern a man from a woman. Or maybe it's his parties Immigration policies or his love of Transvestite storytime for your kids ?
Do you have TDS?
Thank you for your concise and articulate piece. A lesson in clear analysis.
I'm glad you can say that out loud (at least for the time being) in England without censorship or fear of prison! Its totally without reality to me that so many p eople I speak to admire Trump usually quoting "you're fired". There seems to be no safeguard in USA to prevent such a person from wielding power not only there but in the world so we also are under fear as he may become obsessed with his little red button, or do other harms our economies cannot withstand.
As with all things in one's life we can only take the hit and try to carry on as best we can. If he is the cause of ultimate planetary depopulation then let's hope it's over quickly and painlessly. If it means cutting ourselves off from the USA in terms of trade, military (or other) alliances, etc, then so be it: we will all be poorer for it but c'est la vie. Personally I can't see these things happening (at least not the latter - too much money at stake for the few) but it'll be what it will be!
UA-cam is censoring loads of comments.we don't have 'free speech'.

UK government blocking climate bill and increasing civil liberty restrictions using police and jail. What is going on???
This is false, no climate bill is being blocked. The bill being blocked is one brought by a private member to impose legal deadlines on UK - in other words tie the UK's hands, which would be a silly thing to do. UK is still doing all the net zero things, it just doesn't want to be tied to a legally binding deadline.
Same use of people's fears to be seen to be doing something. 'Knife crime' is the latest manipulation. Short term political decisions often have longer term unintended consequences. Politicians, certainly modern ones, are self-serving, short-sighted, and in most cases vacuous (hence the reliance on policy advisors, etc). In many ways not to different from the electorate.
They don’t work for us.

Narcissists in Power are Humanity's Bane... 🤔
He won by a large majority very clear cut. Does that make the majority of Americans mad or bad or both. You can't question one without the other 😂
It was in fact a rather small majority 1.5% of the voters one of the smallest margins and certainly no overwhelming mandate.
Have you spent much time in rural America?
I don’t get why main stream ‘independent’ media goes above and beyond to cover this up. Strange times.
Fear of Trump. The US under Trump, is going to end up like a mirror image of Russia under Putin.
he is both.
Yes. He is both but in many ways, worse than both.
Definitiv
Both and sad!!!
Inadequate!!!
If we can all see it, why are so many Americans choosing to just ignore it? Was it like this in pre-war Germany? I suppose future generations will judge them, but will it be too late?
Ditto for UK, I guess.
Yes, it was like this in pre war Germany, if you read some of the comments on other channels. From Germans.
He's also getting older .....and out of shape ..... seems to think he's invincible surviving that ear wound ...... a medical emergency could easily be in his future .....
It has been predicted he will not last more than 100 days.
I’ve never heard any other president get upset over a sermon… or shown less interest while his wife seemed like she actually cared. Seemed, at the very least.
A hard stare does not exactly qualify as "caring", but l take your point.
I think he was trying not to laugh.
Wrong, he is reasserting natural law, which is reality.
The three words that best describe Trump are as follows, and I quote:
STINK
STANK
STUNK
You say that as if the two are mutually exclusive. He's always been a monster. It's just that now, his ego and dementia have grown so enormous that what little grasp on reality he once had is long gone.
YES BOTH! I didn't need to watch the rest.
So this is the quality of U.S. professors over there? "We all know", "he is bad"? The man speaks like a layman. He is utterly bizarre, not Trump.
You are wasting your time trying to convince the cultural Marxists spluttering in these comments. Amusing reading them however.
Biden has a lifelong severe stutter. That’s partly why he sounds old.
Lets have this conversation in 6 months
I'm afraid the world is going mad
It never was particularly sane but the lunatics have taken over the asylum again.
It happens quite often, throughout history.
It is almost as if human nature is schizophrenic, bipolar or is somehow double minded. We swing through phases, like a pendulum, from one extreme to the other, throughout the ages. This is a shit phase.
No need to be afraid it is. It absolutely IS going mad…..
America is not a civilized country. They have so much to learn.
Surely a major factor in his victory was disillusionment with the incumbent rather than hope and belief in his character and policies?
In other words, same as the UK, only different characters and policies
@@AnthonyReed-fp7hnJust not the same outcome (although we still get neoliberal policies just like the last same bunch and the last same bunch before them..). I hope🤞
He is completely devoid of empathy.
Trump announces that he'll pour half a trillion of taxpayer's money into an AI-driven surveillance state while people are dying because they can't afford healthcare. I think he qualifies as both.
You perfectly summarized fact tha everybody knows.
He’s going for a senility defence against any court cases that might stick and he can’t give up now…🤔
Bad = bad
Mad = very bad
He is a USA tradition,as I. Wilkerson frames it in the book “Caste”.
I don't think he is mad, but definitely a psychopath. He has no empathy for the weak and vulnerable. He knows he is causing fear but don't care 😢
Typical politician.
A very mad man with vengeance for anyone that crosses him.
A Malignant Narcissist. so he's both in my view and having dealings with one I wouldn't ever put a tick next to one.
he gets away with it cos it's a cult, never make bet against a cult.
"Malignant Narcissist"
Just a regular politician, then.
@ no
Not a regular anything.
That’s poisonous nonsense.
Lunatics of a feather flock together.?
"Doing terrible things, with the intention of creating fear." Isn't that the definition of terrorism?
It seems that his fan base doesn’t care whether he’s mad or bad.
Something is seriously wrong with a country that will elect someone like him: of course it does depend very much on the alternative and whether they can offer any sort of inspiration.
If people are ignored for too long, can you blame them when someone does stand up and listen to their views.
@ of course if someone can pretend they’re listening to your views and then go in the other direction and ignore what you want that’s a completely different thing.
Is/was Biden better?
@@PolygonSwan Oh yes, by a country mile.
