    My Hua Chenyu playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLiy_Fye9rIjvgO-2F1JYa6gQDHmGNurqZ.html
    La letra en español:
    Soy
    Soy lo que soy.
    Siempre me amaré como soy.

Felicidad.

Just from this video alone, it’s clear that this man puts a lot of effort into his videos. Taking the extra step to listen to the original and even do research on the backstory of the song, as well as the writer. This channel deserves a whole lot more attention than it’s currently getting and that’s facts. Keep up the great work Andy!

Swung by to re-watch this, and I will forever be moved to pain and joy by the lines "we are all the honor of the creator" and "I'm a firework of a different color." I wish you could see film of HuaHua singing this in concert. He cries at the end, and the audience starts crying at the beginning, knowing he's going to cry. Those of us who couldn't be there, watch from home and join right in. It's a tear fest.

Did you notice Hua Chenyu was dressed in a robe? Lesley Cheung dressed that way when he sang that song and that goes to show you the detail of Hua. The emotion emulating from Hua in this song is heart piercing. Beautiful performance!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hua only sings this song once a year at his Mars concerts. Thank you for your reaction it's so apparent that you love our HuaHua xoxox

Hua Hua loved Leslie. Unlike his other rearranged performances on Singer, he didn't change a single note of this song. He never changes Leslie's songs. Feeling a bit off the beaten path himself, he can relate to Leslie's struggles. He's not gay, but he is different from many people. It moves him so to sing this song, that it often makes him cry. Me too. You too. Great reaction.

Your reaction to Hua's performance is so touching and your comments so on point. Glad you did a back story on this song. It helps to appreciate and respect this song more when Hua performs it. He was paying tribute to Leslie one of his idol and one of his favorite song. It's so fitting for Hua too as he can relate to being a unique individual artist that he stands for. I also love how you emphasize his wonderful technical usage in his voice. It's one of the great things I think is taken for granted or not appreciated as much by many reactors.
Btw, when you have some spare time on your own or want to react to, check out his interviews on Eng Subs. Each one gives you different perspective of Hua and will love him even more as an artist, music philosophy, and respected, sweet, naive, childlike persona.

I really liked that you took the time to listen to the original before hand, and get to know a little of the story.
It is deeply tragic, Even though I knew nothing about Leslie at that time, I really feel the tragic loss.
But I feel that we get to know him some through Hua chen yu, there is og course a story there too.
He was Hua chen yus Idol, and he loves this song so much. He used to end his concert with this Song, very emotional.
And also, Hua is a master og rearanging songs, he gives song new life, he seeks to enhance the best part og songs, and adds his own elements where he sees for, but always keeping the core of the song. In his opinions most songs can allways been made better.
But with Leslie's songs it is diffrent, he only adds slight changes, he feels the songs are perfect as they are, and sees no reason to change them.

Thank you so much for this reaction! 💕 For me, it's the best reaction I have ever seen for that performance.
I'm a huge fan of Leslie (and Hua Hua) and it's the first time I see a reactor making the effort to search who Leslie was and watching his own rendition of this song. By doing this, you can understand so much more about what this performance meant for Chinese people and for Hua Chenyu. And when you know the story behind this song, this song which is already very beautiful just by itself becomes something even much more special and much more touching.
Hua Chenyu too is a huge admirer of Leslie (he was HIS idol) and this song is his favorite Chinese song. And I understand him very well. Because the lyrics of this song are incredible and when you really understand them, it's one of the most powerful song. And obviously, as you were very moved, you understood very well what needed to be understood 💕.
I think every Martian who wants to understand Hua Chenyu better should search who Leslie was, because I think he really has a big influence on Hua. For example, I'm sure that if he wrote songs about depression it's linked with Leslie who committed suicide due to this disease.

As you can see by reading the name of my channel, I'm a Leslie Cheung fan from Brazil. 'I Am What I Am' is my favorite song and his performance during the Passion Tour in 2000 is so touching and tells a lot about him as a person and as an artist that I felt the need to look for a reaction.
Although your reaction is about Hua Chenyu's cover, I felt very happy that you took your time to read about Leslie and the meaning behind the lyrics. I appreciate this about you since you reacted to Elis Regina's 'Como Nossos Pais'. You had the translation with you during the reaction, and I think this was a very considerate thing to do. While other people say "oh I wish I knew what s/he is saying", you actually take your time to look into it and study about the singer and the lyrics. I admire your sensibility.
As for 'I Am What I Am', I was the first person to translate this song to Portuguese. I felt VERY honored to be able to do that. It's not just a song to me. It represents the whole process of accepting who you are. Leslie's evolution over the years is crystal clear. At the end of the 90s he was extremely proud of who he was, and he was willing to show this part of himself to everyone, even though he knew the media would love to use it against him. It's all about bravery. All about "letting the rose blossom undisguised even though it's in a lonely desert". I cry when watching his performance not because I feel sad, but because the lyrics make me feel proud.
I got emotional while watching your reaction because you clearly could feel the same. We feel honored to be able to understand the emotion behind some songs. Sometimes I feel sad for the ones who don't feel anything when listening to meaningful lyrics.
If you're interested, there's one performance that makes me very happy. It's his version of 'American Pie' by Don McLean in 2000. You can notice how he loved the stage, it was like his second home. 'American Pie' is the song that started his career in 1977. You'll feel happy just by watching his carefree performance in 2000. Thanks for your videos!

I'm revisiting all of Andy's reactions to HuaHua, and I so appreciated your taking the time to share this much information. It always adds to the appreciation of the lyrics to be aware of more of the background. Thank you for this. As a film buff, I was already a fan of Leslie's, but I wasn't really aware of his musical career until HuaHua did this song. I know more songs now, but this is still the centerpiece for me. You translated it into Portuguese???!!!!! Way to go! I'm every bit as impressed as I ought to be. Proud of you and happy for you to have had that honor. Blessings to you from Southern California, USA.

You have no idea😢, how much I appreciate you for really getting to know about Leslie Cheung before listening to this.
As a fan of both Leslie and Huahua, this song means a lot, and also is one of the saddest, most meaningful and symbolic Chinese songs out there.
哥哥, as we call Leslie in Chinese, struggled a lot in his life time, because of his sexuality and the overall stress and hate society put on him.
Like you mentioned, even with all these negative push backs, he still was able to become one of THE IT film star, superstar in East Asia at the time.
To me, this song really represented everything he was the best out of all his songs, in my humble opinion. And of course, this is a beautifully written song, both lyrics and music.
Great job again, keep up with the great reviews/reaction🌹!

Hua Chenyu has said in an interview that Lesley Cheung's songs are the one composer whose songs need no changing. He'd only sing this song once a year as the final song of his Mars concert because it's so emotional for him. Can't you just picture him singing this in the corner of a dark piano bar? ❤❤❤

No need to apologize for the tears. This performance has brought tears to most of our eye's. How can Hua Chenyu's emotional performance not affect just about anyone who watches it? He has said many times in past interviews that Leslie Chung is one of his idols and this song is his favorite song. He was still in his teens when Leslie Chung tragically took his own life but it was an event that to this day affects Hua Chenyu. This song became so important to Hua Hua that he doesn't sing it all that often in live performances. He reserves this song for special moments and generally sings it only once a year. I have watched the full episode of the Singer 2018 that Hua Hua performed this song in and what you don't see here is what happened after he walked off stage. He usually waited for the guy that was assigned to him by the show to be his assistant while on the show and then they would walk to the room where all of the other artists who had already performed gather. After walking off the stage in this case though, Hua Hua was still in a very emotional space that he went into to bring out that emotional performance. He did not wait for his assistant like he normally would but just started making the walk on his own. His shoulders were hunched forward and his head was looking down. His assistant had to run to catch up with him and when he caught up with Hua Hua he grabbed him from behind and gave him a hug. Hua Hua had been in such a deep place within himself that he did not realize that anyone was running up to him from behind and he was very startled when he was grabbed from behind. Being grabbed like that snapped him out of the mental state he was in though and he looked up and manged a smile but you could see the tears in his eyes. It was a very vulnerable and touching moment. BTW, I am also excited for the Singer 2020. It's a stroke of brilliance by the producers to bring Hua Hua back. They realize the world wide attention that he brought to their show by the clips here on UA-cam and it makes complete sense to have him back on it. For Hua Hua's part, he also recognizes how his popularity world wide has exploded after doing the 2018 season. While his world wide popularity may not be his number 1 priority, he is also a business man and he recognizes the positive affect that appearing on that show has had on his career.

Only when he is singing, he steps into his own innermost world and bring out his emotions. He is usually level-headed, cool and calm when he speaks warmly. This is what I like, enter the spectrum of feelings in his songs. Where we draw out our love, hurts, unspoken words.

Besides honoring the late artist, this song is also incredibly personal to him. He first sang this song in the superboy contest 2013. He did gain a lot of fans, but also attracted many haters. There were a lot of people in China called him crazy or criticized him (even today) because he is unique and different. So the line” I am a firework just in a different color, but I am who I am” also speaks to him.
Despite the criticism, he would rather spend his energy in making the music. The song “I don’t care” is basically about the people cyber bullying him...I thought people should know his hard earning success..

Hey Andy, just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your honest and thoughtful reactions. You're doing it just right. Hence, even if I'm not going to fully watch a certain reaction, I always make sure to open them up and at least leave an upvote. I feel comfortable doing it, as every reaction I have watched (quite a few) was great and your quality is consistent. Keep it up and all the best!

The story of Leslie Cheung is really sad and Hua Chenyu really likes this song and respects Leslie Cheung. So much that he didn’t rearrange anything and kept the original. I think if HuaHua doesn’t rearrange a song it really means something (to him), because normally he would rearrange a song even if he likes it, making it his own. Thanks for reacting on HuaHua! ❤️

Thanks again for an informative and appreciative reaction. As one who loves both Dimash and Hua Chenyu, but does not have the professional music background, I love listening to knowledgeable analysis and learning new things about the technical side of singing. One of the reasons perhaps that there is such an overlap between Martians and Dears, is, perhaps, because both these performers, although very different have a special relationship with the music, and with their fans. It is when they are all together, the music, the listeners and the artist that the magic happens, a connection of the soul perhaps. You would be very interested I think in listening to some of Hua Chenyu's music from his concerts where he interacts with the fans between and during the songs. They feed off each other. By the way, his fans call him Bao-Bei (Baby in Chinese).
