  • Greetings everyone!

today we are sharing some of the various photos we have captured of our (mostly) friendly neighborhood Cooper's Hawks.
I've seen a lot of recent posts on Facebook where people are asking for help identifying birds of prey on their feeders or watching from a nearby limb or fence post. Cooper's Hawks are smaller than Red-shoukdered Hawks and there is an even greater size difference between them and RED-TAILED hawks. If you look closely at the coloration of the head, there is a very clearly defined darker "cap" of feathers, and they have a very well defined contrast of feathers near their eyes which resembles eyebrows in some cases!
Next, take a look at the eyes! While fledglings or juveniles have pretty mild eye color, as they mature their eyes will become more pigmented and become orange. When they are fully matured, their eyes will be bright, piercing red! take a look at the last photo in the slide for a fantastic example!
Cooper's hawks are unfortunately small and medium sized bird hunters but will also eat reptiles and rodents given the chance. if they bother your feeder birds too often, you can try running outside like a maniac clapping your hands and chasing them off for the time being, or if you have more than one offender and looking like a nutbag while trying to protect your birds is not an attractive look for you, you may want to take your feeders down for a few days or a week. Your regular birds will move to where the food still is and the hawks will not spend much time in your yard at this point. Repeat as needed!
    thanks for reading and viewing!
