    Thank you! I found hickory nut shells all over my property that I just bought so that's why I looked up this video. I wonder if there are some nutcracking tools that would make it easier for my son to be interested in helping cracking the nuts

    Chris here. Very cool meeting you. Very cool video in love how you explain the variety of different trees that are all kickery. It could become confusing without that detail. Really great video and simple to understand. I had a thought that maybe Gathering the nuts and bringing them home to a bench vise might be a more controlled way of cracking them between the jaws of the vice and maybe even put a pipe on the handle of device for extra leverage in control of the squeeze

      The vice idea is good and I imagine that would work very well.

    Once you get out the nutmeats, must very carefully sort from tiny shell bits which are very hard and often sharp!

    Have you ever heard of a "Pig- nut" Its a cross between a pecan and hickory tree that cross bred. They look like a pecan but are super hard shell, and dang sure bitter! I've only seen 2 trees like this in my life that crossed in the wild here in Oklahoma.

    Hey, Cody. I've "rock bash" harvested these ever since I was a kid. Something that just dawned on me. Do you think roasting them over campfire would make them easier to remove or would it just make it more difficult?

    These things are nearly impossible to crack, even with a hammer.

    do the shells crack differently if you strike the pointed end lengthwise?

    • @CavemanCody
      @CavemanCody  5 років тому +1

      Sometimes they'll break lengthwise but I dont find it any easier to get the meat out.

      @@CavemanCody thanks! it's like you could burn the same amount of calories as you consume with some nuts - like black walnuts.

      Thick walled hickory nuts will not crack.need to show pictures of the cracked nuts so you will know easy cracking ones from difficult cracking ones

      @@kresscraven7966 Yeah I know all about that. That doesn't change my opinion of these nuts being tasty.
