I got my father's old Heath trap working again during the Covid lockdown. Now I'm up to 117 species for my garden in Hampshire, and that's only running it a few times each year.
While I can't confirm for certain I'm pretty sure it's due to males generally being more active when it comes to flying around. Usually a female moth only has to fly to find a good host plant and once they've found it they'll stay there as long as they can. While the males tend to have to fly farther to find a mate
Great video, I’ve recently built my own moth trap 🤞
tried mine last night and caught a caddisfly and a treble lines moth in the trap and saw a few smaller moths nearby. weather was a bit chilly

NIce video! I have been a butterfly and moth collector and photographer most of my life.
where can I send pictures for identification purposes, as you mentioned at 7:42?? also, can you recommend any books for beginners? thanks.
+1. Would like to know this too
I think iRecord and iNaturalist are recommended for this
Definitely will give his a go 👍
Do you let the moths go free in the morning or wait till the next evening?
Its good practice to set them free at night so they have a better chance to not get spotted and eaten :)
What time of year is “this time of year”?
Why is it that it is mostly male moths enter the traps. Do the males and females fly at different times, or do males have increased territory?

You do get some females, and in some species they're quite easy to tell. I've had several female buff ermines so far this year.
Nice!
Kill any wax moths you find they ruin bee hives, bees are bros.
