This video came like one week too late :( My boyfriend's parents are extremely conservative, I did everything wrong, I can't eat spicy food, and yeah, they hated me... Until I wrote a letter in Korean (my boyfriend translated it for me). I basically explained that our cultures are different, I apologized, warned them that I'll make more mistakes but asking for their understanding, and since then they've loved me. Now I write a letter to them every once in a while, talking about my every day life and keeping them updated on my kimchi eating progress, and they keep asking my boyfriend when we're getting married. I tried and wanted to impress, but screwed up because of that, but then I barely had any interest in Korea in general. Honesty goes a long way, most important thing is to be who you are :)
I know that it's important to show respect for other people's culture, but it's a two-way street. It's one thing if you bring home a boyfriend or girlfriend who grew up "inside" and understands the cultural norms. But if you bring home someone from outside the culture, the most important thing is to see if they are making an effort and to forgive unintended violations of etiquette.
It is also the same here in the Philippines, when you go inside the house, you should take off your shoes, and yes we also don't call the parents or persons who are way older than us by their first names. I fully understand the Korean culture because I'm an Asian too. There are some similarities between Korean culture and the Philippines' culture. No problem with me If i go to Korea :)
I would love to know how to speak to Korean parents. What other Korean phrases would impress them? How kind of compliments in Korean would then want to hear? As a foreigner, how can the girl let them know in Korean that she's happy dating their son?
I really needed this. My boyfriend wanted me to meet his parents and so I made dinner(I'm half Korean so that part was easy) but because only one of my parents in Korean I didn't know anything about impressing a Korean mother. So thank you for saving me.
Oh now I'm nervous ! I'm sure I'll do okay when the time comes (if it does) but it's so different from Mexican parents! In Mexican family's it's usually like your family right away you get called Mija or Mijo (which means my son or my daughter) right away and we are right away loud and just really out there lol but you'll get fed ALOT!
I recently met my boyfriend's Korean mother and she liked me! =) My boyfriend told me it was because of my politeness. Although his mother is really liberal and we even hold hands in front of her, the thing that determined wether she liked me or not was my politeness. So I recommend anyone who is meeting their future Korean inlaws to just be polite and pay close attention to the parents. A simple thing as holding a plate for them when they cut something on it gives them a positive view on you.
My great-grandma disowned my grandma for marrying a Chinese guy... She didn't like my grandpa cause he's Chinese. no other reason. and now my mom (half Korean and half Chinese) married a Japanese and believe me, My dad's side of family thinks of her as poison. (cause you know the history)
this video was very helpful and it's a bit much to remember...but i already remove my shoes while in the house and im not Asian...it's just something we've been doing for years...i already know how to say hello formally...but i would need to learn the proper way to address the father and mother...and the proper way to knowledge the meal...now the meal maybe an issue...because i can't eat spicy foods...but why am i worrying now im not dating yet...lmao!!!
i didn't really follow any of the rules but my korean inlaw loved me, i talk about it in my newest video, i am still a newbie i hope one i can make videos as good as you.
I wouldn´t change my behavior neither just to impress his parents. Am I gonna marry him or his parents??? They would piss me off anyways after a while. There´s nothing worse than tough in-laws and I would make sure, they know they are a pain in the ass.
Anyonghaseyo! Hey girl I just subscribed to your chanel. I absolutely enjoyed watching your videos. I am interesting in learning the Korean language because I just love the Korean culture. Keep the videos coming they're great and hilarious. Komawayo
Ahhhhhh h This is three years too late, but next time HANDWRITE a formal apology and be VERY honest. Write it in their language too. If it was a culture mistake, explain that you're raised from another culture and will try harder to get things right--but really, honesty goes a long way and if you're showing that your trying your best, then things would probably work out. :o
If you're interested in the link, where they explain drinking culture in more detail, I believe the video is at /watch?v=99AJz0WAtK8 and the relevant part is at 3:25, although the whole video is about Korean food etiquette. It's true that Koreans in Korea tend to drink a lot (I hear), but I haven't noticed a big drinking culture in Korean-American families, at least no more than average American families.
Prof. Oh, you were amazing as usual, thank you so much. The forewarnings mentioned are not only proper to Korea or Asia, they are common etiquette in many countries all over the world. Most of the points you spoke of should be applied across the board no matter where your future in-laws are from with the little specific variations appropriate to their culture (dressing properly, bringing gifts, addressing those who are older politely, giving to/receiving from those who are older with 2 hands...)
lol i always think about the food part of this.. im a vegan and my mom who is korean freaked out when i decided to do this so i always wonder if a future in law would do the same
Can you teach what to do if you get lost in Korea? Like how to ask for directions? Or Could you do a video on tipping in Korea? Where and when is tipping acceptable like restaurants, taxi cabs, stuff like that.
Maybe if you pronounce things wrong or know only two phrases, it doesn't seem very good? I know it can be weird but I say it varies to family to family. Some are strict, some can be nice, some can be a bit spiteful but in general I feel like this isn't really needed because I am pretty sure the thoughts you give to them also include them to you. They wouldn't expect you to know Korean and let alone make you become a Korean. C: So just act normally and give them some polite hello to goodbye bows.
Can’t believe I’m watching this old video, gonna meet my Korean gf’s mom today. I been living in Korea for almost 4 years now, and honestly this vid only helps for people who have absolute no clue about Korean/asian culture like at all haha
i am indonesian dutch chinese and my bf is korean,. at the initial stage , she's a bit conservative towards me due to language barrier..after few months, we are as close as mom-daughter even though we still had language problem.. i totally agree with the dining etiquette , she was so happy when i eat everything she made.hahaha..
i have conservative old fashioned korean inlaws. in america we tend to dote on the mother ie/ bring something for the mom . it honors the house to do for the mom. in his old fashioned family we need to dote on the father, anything i do has to be his favorite. i wasn't prepared for that. is this common?
I don't know much about other Eastern European countries, but in Latvia, where I'm from, we take shoes off at our home or when visiting as well. You wouldn't sleep with your shoes in the bed, would you, so it kind of makes sense to take off your shoes, doesn't it?
Can you teach us how to act or impress if we have the opportunity to be on a fanmeeting of our favorite Kpop idol singer or band?, what things are allowed to do, what things we are not to allowed to do, how can we impress him/her, if they could accept some presents, how can we get a small talk and so on.
Ah I could have used this advice a couple years ago! I suppose it's not too late to put it to use :) For the first meeting with my girlfriend's parents, they paid for lunch so I was coached on what to say. The last night I was in Seoul they even let me stay at their house. I just acted like I would with American parents. My girlfriend later told me that she had never seen her dad laugh and smile as much when we were talking so I guess the "don't act skeevy and be respectful" tact worked.
Thank you soooooooooo much! My Korean bf (I'm Caucasian Canadian btw) has been saying that he's gonna take me to introduce his parents and this makes me feel a bit more confident when I go to meet them. They're a bit more traditional, though fairly liberal minded, but I really want to impress them, so knowing about the gifts and what to say is so useful to me! Just one thing- as a girl am I expected more to wear a long skirt/ dress?? 감사합나다!!!!
I am so happy you're back!!! How do Korean's view american music? American's seem to not know about kpop at all or are not very receptive to it...unless it's Gangnam Style.
I was wondering, you said in your video that you should try to eat everything on your plate and also try some of the sidedishes as well. I've been to a Korean restaurant before, and also when I make Korean food from a recepe, it's always sooo much. Are you really expected to eat all that, or is it ok to say: "It was all very delicious and I enjoyed the food, but I am full now"?
It depends on sooooo many things. It's just like with dating any person from any race, personal taste will affect the situation, but from my experiences, Asian parents can be a little pickier whenever it comes to their child's partner, but it really depends on the person/people. Just be with someone who accepts you as you are, if you try to change for someone, life won't be too much fun later. :( :D
Well, I want to ask what would be a proper behavior if you are living with their parents? I feel as if I have slacked off on my manners. Is that a bad thing? My bf tells me I should always always greet them and I always wash their dishes and do some chores around the house. Is there anything else that I could do for them to be happy?
This is very interesting. Some of the Korean culture are similar to my Navajo culture in meeting your significant other's parents. Good informational video.
You can say: 오빠, 발리 나아세요 (Oppa, palli na-a-seyo) Although the expression is commonly used, I have read a couple of times that it is not appropriate, so maybe Professor Oh will be able to shed a light on that. I am just at an intermediate level in Korean.
hard to have a gander at the toes if you're wearing sock. lol. My husband is ABC and because I have a very high gag reflex and am allergic to pepper we were kinda able to skip over the whole socializing over dinners thing. My in laws always had some clear soup and rice for me and accepted that it was just the way it was, however THANK goodness my son was born with a HEALTHY appetite. He made them forget all about my food flaws. lol
Hello Prof. Oh, I've watched several Korean dramas/movies and I am a little confused about age gap differences in relationships. Generally older women and younger men couples are seen as a bad match but in some dramas/movies it shows that its OK, however I've also seen some were differences between older men and younger women are sen as not ok as well...so am confused and wondered if you could explain: How are age gap differences in coupes seen in Korea or by Korean Americans?
helps a lot! :3 im meeting his parents a about 2 weeks!! and they apparently already love me and serious about our marriage! sometimes i forgot to say 요 at the end but his mom is so sweet and understood since im a foreigner buf next time i will remember! i bought them some pretty pricey gifts but i gipe they like it.. they even want me to calm them 엄마, 아빠 maybe they are little but more not strict? idk im thankful for that but ill still do my best! thanks for this :3 감삽니다!
in the next kwow episode could you tell us more about sexisim in korea? also often in kdramas the guy pulls the girl by her wrist not her hand could you please tell us why?
Annyeong, Professor Oh!! Can you teach us about the education system in Korea . Lilke from preschool to university. I how they do classes and how they are sorted into each class. Can you also talk about cram schools?
My nose always runs when i eat spicy things and i know you shouldn't blow your nose at the table... What do I do?? Just try to make it seem like I'm wiping my mouth? I'm not the smoothest person ever so that will be interesting...
B-b-build up a tolerance to spicy food? *sweats* I had better start now. I'm not a fan of spicy food. I feel like it just causes pain and doesn't add to the enjoyment ㅋㅋ r.i.p ;=;"
iBTS me too just pain... But i like mild spice adds flare to the food. But i guess when tolerance is already developed, then it would be enjoyable already
So true! When I first time heard that Americans and other Europeans than Scandinavians usually keep their shoes on indoors, I was little bit surprised... :D
Omg this is going to help so much! What are some things I should learn before meeting my sweethearts college buddies when we visit Seoul? It will be in February.
Professor Oh, could you please say what to say at the fanmeeting? I would really like to go, but I don't know, what Will I do when someone would ask me : "what is your name?" or "How old are you?" Please help me!
I just had my first meeting with my Korean inlaws last week. Me and Hojun are scheduled to marry in four months, and although he's met my parents, I hadn't until a week ago. I wish I had of seen this before hand. There were two things you said that I missed.
I'm Asian and i grew always taking my shoes off whenever i went to anyone's home, i always use to think that everyone did the same and not just Asians, but now reading the comments i think it is more popular in Europe and more people do it here then in America :).
hi, i loved your video, I'm researching Korea, I'm going to enter in a competition on making a video on why i love Korea,, and i wondered if u could give me a few tips of what i should say or do in the video,, or just something i should mention,, i would a appreciate it, and thx, keep up the good work
If you're doing a toast all together at a meal, I've heard that you can sub water if you have religious reasons. It's more important to at least take part in the collective action. The information came from a video by simonandmartina, a couple that's been living in Korea for a few years. I'm half Korean myself, but I grew up in America, and my family is Christian. We don't consider drinking a sin (only drunkenness), and it would be no problem for us if someone's future spouse couldn't drink.
Hey Professor Oh! I heard that South Korea are famous for their PC Gaming Cafe where friends can gather on the weekend to play Star Craft or Diablo while enjoying snacks and coffie. Can you tell us more about the gaming culture in Korea. I even heard theres a weekly show just for the game Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Thanks!!!!
You know, there are some great tidbits of info here. However... Mature, older adults, parents, etc. can generally see quite a bit in another person's character, personality, etc. I'm fairly certain that slips in etiqutte should not be that big of a deal, compared to more serious character flaws, etc. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Sorry!
Stephanie Boncina You apologize? For what? For being yourself.
They didn´t accept you, because you can´t eat spicy food? Hilarious XD
Corona84 😄😄😄😄and funny
I wouldnt even marry if my in-laws are so conservative and can't understand that I am different

yes this is true when I first met my wife's parents I didn't know all that much but I tried really hard and I guess they say that I was trying
Robert Pickett Yess you will think so ,but not them.
Im Mexican & this video was a major help for when I meet my Korean sweetheart's parents :)
daisyhinojosa23 I'm Mexican and my boyfriend is Japanese
@Ellie G lmao what did the mom think?
Im half Chilean lmao guess Korean girls like us Spanish guys

Would have been nice if my Korean boyfriend had told me these before I met his parents! :) Good video, very helpful!
I'm not full Asian but my mom hates when people walk around her house with shoes on...so it's a must to take the shoes off at the door😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I am English and I was always taught to leave the shoes at the door! shoes in the house annoy me 😅
My great-grandma disowned my grandma for marrying a Chinese guy...
She didn't like my grandpa cause he's Chinese. no other reason.
and now my mom (half Korean and half Chinese) married a Japanese and believe me, My dad's side of family thinks of her as poison. (cause you know the history)
Glad you are back
Yes loving this episode will definitely come in handy
when I meet a Korean cutie pie
Thanks Professor
Hooray, you're back! Thank you for all that you do making these videos; I've learned so much from you :-)
Omg I love these videos. I have learned so much from them. I am glad to be watching

Ahhhhhh h This is three years too late, but next time HANDWRITE a formal apology and be VERY honest. Write it in their language too.
It's basically just saying "is" or "it is." It's used as a statement for the most part. The opposite would be 니가, or "nika," used with a question.
Prof. Oh, you were amazing as usual, thank you so much. The forewarnings mentioned are not only proper to Korea or Asia, they are common etiquette in many countries all over the world. Most of the points you spoke of should be applied across the board no matter where your future in-laws are from with the little specific variations appropriate to their culture (dressing properly, bringing gifts, addressing those who are older politely, giving to/receiving from those who are older with 2 hands...)
i was happy when i heard spice i just love spicy foods
so much that you're gonna need some babysitting LMAO! you are awesome!
lol i always think about the food part of this.. im a vegan and my mom who is korean freaked out when i decided to do this so i always wonder if a future in law would do the same
Can you teach what to do if you get lost in Korea? Like how to ask for directions?
Or Could you do a video on tipping in Korea? Where and when is tipping acceptable like restaurants, taxi cabs, stuff like that.
Yes you are back. Great to hear your voice again -3
Sooo happy that you're back!!
well i can't really develop a taste for spicy foods since my stomach can't handle it.... so is that a minus or what lol...?
Minus for sure. A lot of Korean food is quite spicy.
Pei Ton ah, okay.
MIA 😁😁😁😁😁😁

Glad you're back! I'm not going to lie, this video made me nervous and I'm single!
What's the new camera? And, are you using a separate audio recorder? I'm interested in the tech details.
Thank you soooooooooo much! My Korean bf (I'm Caucasian Canadian btw) has been saying that he's gonna take me to introduce his parents and this makes me feel a bit more confident when I go to meet them. Great info... I wish I had seen this before introducing my girl to my mom.
"Not so much that you're gonna need some baby sitting" LOL

dear professor oh, a review about ulzzang would be nice :) like what kind of characteristics should people have to be labelled as an ulzzang , etc .
What I mean is it depends on the person, rather than making a general statement, don't you think?
You can say:
오빠, 발리 나아세요 (Oppa, palli na-a-seyo)
Although the expression is commonly used, I have read a couple of times that it is not appropriate, so maybe Professor Oh will be able to shed a light on that. I am just at an intermediate level in Korean.
This will be quite helpful this summer when I meet my inlaws. I'm incredibly nervous.
Thank you!
Wow, I actually already knew most of this. Sometimes I underestimate my knowledge of Korean culture XD Still learned a few things though. Good video!
I like how she said that shaking her head like if she was drunk
guy's mom loves Lee Minho=bring him to meet the parents too XD You have to admit, it would take the pressure off you kekekeke
hard to have a gander at the toes if you're wearing sock. lol. My husband is ABC and because I have a very high gag reflex and am allergic to pepper we were kinda able to skip over the whole socializing over dinners thing. I'd love to know more about Korean manners and what you should do and what absolutely not! I hope you can make a video for this. ^^
So glad you got new equipment not just for you doing the show but that you needed it since the other broke XD # Kwow Forever
If you leave your shoes near the door i noticed that you bring in less dust and such in the house.
Professor Oh, could you discuss how to deal with food allergies in Korea?
in the next kwow episode could you tell us more about sexisim in korea? also often in kdramas the guy pulls the girl by her wrist not her hand could you please tell us why?
Professor Oh, thank you so much for this awesome episode. It's my favourite one! ^_^
really true!! but some people do not realize it and they do not see the person
Can you talk about family life in Korea or how to say Adult child parents etc. or daily life Thanks
OMG thank you for this!! I will put it to good use! I dated a Korean Guy and his parents hated me! Thank you!
Can you talk about Chaebol? Did the word Chaebol come from the English word Cabal?
Annyeong, Professor Oh!! Can you teach us about the education system in Korea . Lilke from preschool to university. I how they do classes and how they are sorted into each class. Can you also talk about cram schools?
I believe she means eldest in general, Koreans believe in respecting elders even if the age difference is only 1 year.
