- I made my first trip to Meaux, an easy day trip from Paris, and was introduced to the Brie Masters of Meaux, the World War One Museum on the grounds of the Battle of the Marne, and even took a boat ride on the Marne itself. Thanks to Agence Observatoire for the invitation out, and to Meaux's tourism board for the warm welcome! My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux
And here's the French wishlist: bit.ly/JaysFren...
Thanks for watching!
When the Americans finally joined in 1917, they sent segregated white and black troops, but they did not allow black soldiers to be armed. One troop was of black musicians, which is why the French took to jazz. The French army took in the black American troops, armed them, let them fight, and decorated them as they decorated any other soldiers. The black soldiers took stories of the good treatment back to the US, which is why many black artists, writers, and others came to France between the wars. The same happened after WWII.
This is not to be confused with the story of Eugene Boullard, a black American who was already in France and joined other young Americans as a pilot in the Escadrille Lafayette before the U.S. joined the war. When the U.S. joined and the Americans from the Escadrille Lafayette integrated the American troops, Boullard was not allowed to do so. The Americans couldn't believe he was a pilot. He remained in France after the war. He was a decorated war hero. He was in the Resistance during WWII. But he finally returned to the U.S. When de Gaulle was in N.Y. he asked to visit Boullard and he was found, destitute, his story completely ignored by the Americans. And de Gaulle did pay him a visit.
Another short trip outside Paris, for you, is the Lafayette Memorial in Marnes-la-Coquette. Go there on thé Sunday before Memorial Day. There's a wreath laying ceremony, speeches, and a flyover by the current Escadrille Lafayette. It's very moving.
Nice story but Jazz is terrible.
The “Harlem Hellfighters”! Amazing bit of history (American racism notwithstanding).
Thank u Ellen for the history lesson! The treatment of blacks is sad. I pray for the day we learn from our history.
On a lighter note, loved the French Brie cheese heads! One of my fave cheeses!🧀
Thank you for this amazing history lesson. I don't think many people knew this. I certainly never knew
TEACH Ellen! Thank you for your post!
My favorite street in Paris is rue de Meaux, AND NOW I KNOW WHY! 😆 Those Brie Bros were the best! The museum looks super interesting, too. I was fortunate to study WWI for a semester when I was an exchange student in England in high school, so I have passing knowledge, but that was a looooong time ago. I’d love to visit Meaux. I’m so glad you didn’t miss the trip! 👍🏼
So fun! Boating, history museum...And there’s a whole Brie segment?? Sign me up! 🧀🤤
It made for quite the day!
Jay Swanson looks like it! Adding another excursion to the France bucket list. 😉
Eating brie would be the best part with these men singning !
Do you think the saying of "CHEESE" for photographs came from Meaux? ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
Really glad you decided to put out videos of some of your day trips, even though you are on break. Thank you! Meaux, and their festival in November are now on my calendar. Between the museum and the festival,, two days would be the absolute minimum amount of time to spend there. I am well past the are of roughing it so three days if I can find accommodations. Or four we'll see.
I actually put the self adhesive aluminum strips in my Amazon cart to hand you to fix your masks to fit and stay in place. Ran into a snag, though, wanting to ship to a Paris address. They are cheap. Should I give you the link? Or just search for aluminum mask strips.
Great video! Thanks!!
I'm a day late, but, as Ellen wrote below, the story of Eugene Bullard is fascinating, and it doesn't end with the war. Check out "The Black Swallow of Death" on "The History Guy" YT channel. Bullard returned to the US after WWII. When his history was discovered, he was interviewed on the "Today" show. Ironically he was still in uniform, the one he wore as an elevator operator in the same building where "Today" was filmed. Spike Lee should make a movie about his life. Bessie Coleman also learned to fly in France.
In trying to learn French, I've come across some great channels. the "Nota Bene" channel has some excellent material on WWI. I promise you that "Face au Dragon --Le Chemin Des Dames" and "Vivre sous l'occupation à Saint-Quentin," will really enrich your knowledge of WWI. You won't be sorry if you check them out.
Thank you for a very enjoyable video, I wonder if they sell those Brie shaped hats in the gift shop, if they do, I'm getting one!
That sounds like a fascinating story! I'm googling it now
These last few videos have been excellent. Fascinating subject matter...museum, Meaux, lavender...looks like you upped your game, style wise as well.
I am really enjoying your videos and am happy to learn about Meaux - hope to make a side trip there on my next visit to Paris. Love the music / musicians in your videos also.
I think it would be well with a side-trip, especially if you've already been to Paris before =D
So Nice. Next trip it’s a “must do”. Quaint. Love the “cheese heads”. Go Packers LOL 🇫🇷 🍷 🧀 🚣♀️ 🚲
The museum was amazing! I’m lacking in my knowledge of history. It looks like a great place to visit. Omg the cheese tour! The singing and samples ❤️
That was AWESOME!!!!! I loved the Cheese Men with the hats! Their song was great and you got to eat delicious brie?? How fun!! Thanks for sharing. I love these interesting day trips out of Paris.
This is a great video.
The note re: African American soldiers in WW1 is so fascinating! My great great Uncle was an Af Am soldier in WW1. He was shipped to Brest, FR. He never spoke of his time there, I'm told. Wish I had those stories....
I wish you did too! I thought it was one of the most interesting stories they shared - it was cool to see him in uniform and armed (all the plaster models of soldiers were taken from the construction crew of the museum, another fun fact I forgot to share)
I need to learn more about WWI as well. That's a wonderful museum. I need to add Meaux on my list of places to visit when I go to France again. So much to see!
Here is a graphic novel you might find interesting Jay

Thanks for posting and for making me aware of a new destination near Paris. If I am ever able to make it to Paris I will add Meaux to my schedule if not for just the singing cheese makers.
Come on Jay! don't tell me you skipped the beautiful cathedral and the Bossuet museum? the cathedral was built from the 12th century until the 14th, it is an architectural treasure given the resources of the time. And Bossuet is an important figure in the history of France.
The look after tasting a seemingly tasteless dessert.😮
J'ai besoin d'une maison dans cette ville, il y a quelqu'un pour nous aider
The river tour did look like it could have been Louisiana! Weird!
That was delightful! Looks like an overnight stay would be fun.
who were the other influencers or instagrammers?
Wohooo we r going on a trip!
Hope you enjoy it!
My favorite history museum in Paris is Les Invalides. By far. But is mostly because I simply love everything regarding WWII (but war itself), but is kind of a love hate relationship that I have with it. I mean, I love the history, the gear, the uniforms, the units, but I hate the war, how Hitler wanted to take over the world, how many people died, etc, etc. But wait, I just saw a lot of WWII stuff there, so I think is not specific to WWI alone. I'll have to definitively prepare to visit Meaux on my next trip.
Meaux would make a great day trip out of Paris, and the museum is great. I definitely need to go back to les Invalides though soon
16:30 France Gall popped into my mind!
The Cheese Bros
Haha 🧀🧀🧀
One man went to Meaux....
I don't think we need ticket with a navigo card, meaux is part of the parisian suburb
If your navigo is for all 5 zones, you should be fine!
What a minute, how is your camera attached to your backpack??? The sorcery!
Muahahahaha!
Wow Jay! They really did it up for you. What a great day. I think you covered all the highlights very well. The cheese guys were a hoot. Wonder about the mustard. Will try to see if I can find some. i like me some mustard. See you on the next one!
I wish we had some mustard too! But the brie was definitely filling on its own 🧀😆🧀
Hey that's my town !
I was at that museum opening day! It was a private collection that was given to the state. If you’re actually serious about learning more about the First World War, DM me and I’ll give you the suggested sites and how to get there
We visited soon after it opened. I think I was most impressed by the craftiness of the soldiers, how they transformed whatever they found in the trenches into utensils -- and how they decorated them. I also appreciated the section on the build-up to the war and how the assassination in Sarajevo was just a lit match to a carefully constucted fire and from that, one thing led to the next.
That’s an impressive museum. You should also check out Musee des Invalides.
I do need to go again 👍
Hello from Philadelphia! Thank you France for helping us out during the Revolutionary War!
The last of the classical wars, first of the modern wars. My favorite to study. Thanks, Jay.
I definitely am far more intrigued now than I was before the visit
I love getting to hear about *world* history from other countries’ perspectives!
🥂 Me too!
This summer's holiday was supposed to be a combined WWI & WWII sites visit to N France & the Normandy Beaches. Alas, a victim to Corona. But if you are planning a weekend away, Normandy is a great choice. That museum looked wonderful. I visited the cheese museum in 2018 - did they give you Brie Noir to try ha ha? So dry it's almost dessicated with an incredibly intense umami flavour to match. A tiny piece is enough. A lovely chill way to spend a summer's day.
These have been some of your best videos on a while. Nicely done Jay. Giving us some great ideas for locations to visit next time we get to Paris.
Happy to keep pinging cool spots!
What a charming town! Jay, you looked very sharp...I have said it before, and I will say it again, you look great in that color. Those little boats look so fun! Thank you for sharing the trip to the museum with us. I loved learning about how African Americans were involved with the French in WWI. I also really enjoyed the Brie brothers; those guys had really nice voices!
They really could sing! And thanks ☺️ I'm happy with it too
@@JaySwanson I finally got logged into my old Instagram account so I can follow you now!
One of my AA co workers is the great grandson of Eugene Bullard a famous AA solider and pilot who fought for France and remained in France playing a part in the jazz scene to avoid the racisim of the US
There is a World War 1 museum in Kansas City, MO in the US (strange location choice, I know).
This looks like an excellent day trip!! My boyfriend would love the WWI museum. We went to the awesome WWII museum in New Orleans in December; it was amazing. Absolutely huge, and so much to see and learn about there.
This is very cool. When we were in France in March, we went to Normandy but when we go back, I want to make sure to go here. My grandfather was in the US Army, stationed in Angers, France during WWI. Thanks for taking us along!
Great video! Beautiful day! Thanks, Jay! 👍😘😘😘🇩🇰
The throwback music at the beginning of the video is giving me life right now. Looks like it was a pretty fabulous day on the river! Reminds me of spending the day tooling around Lake Minnetonka with my family. The WWI museum looks super interesting. And the cheeseheads are just fantastic.
Very nice !
Looks like a great day out! Jay so that trip on the train normally wouldn’t be covered on the navigo decouvert card?
That treehouse didn't look very safe, but I would like to stay in a treehouse hotel, as long as it wasn't too open. The Brie Masters singing and cheese tasting looked like great fun.
Looks like a wonderful day trip - are any of the tours offered in English?
I found your choice of music while touring the WWI museum to be disrespectful. You can do better.
Cindy Greene ...yeah, we commented on that as well. Agree.
Very interesting. Love the singing ❤️
Me too!
Fascinating town....thank you!
You're welcome!
Looked like an enjoyable day. The cheese masters were excellent 🧀👍
Thank you for taking us on your trips Jay. It helps more than you know
Blessed are the cheese makers!
Indeeeeeeed 🧀
What a fantastic day out!
Right??🥂
hello Jay the word free is a good word i like
If you’re interested in reading about WW1, I recommend “A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914-1918” by G J Meyer as a good starting off point. It gives a very nice overview of the entirety of the war, and doesn’t get so bogged down with details that it becomes dry or boring.
Just ordered! Thanks Trevor:)
These day trips are much appreciated
What a great experience!
Looked like a great day!
I want that hat of Brie
Mo cheese please 👍
Wow what a lovely day
Omg - dreamy ❤️❤️❤️
Great day trip love to see more trips
More to come!
Solange is my favorite name in French.
Nice 👍
Make cheese, not war.
