Once Kurt walked with his lame story about his dad killing Iris she just basically let it go all while having dna evidence! My biggest problem was the rush into this borderline checklist ending. On paper, if we cross everything else out, Dexter being killed by his son can be deep and poetic, can also have an interesting comparassion to how Harry killed himself because of Dexter, the whole "similar situation, totally different foundations". But it was soooooo rushed. There was no weight to any of the intense situation, no reactions shown, they resembled a highschooler rushing to finish retelling the episode before the bell rings for a class. Harrison kills his father and barely has time to react in any way, no scenic time to let it sink in. So yeah, I agree with you, it's not a bad ending, it's just written and shot so emberrassingly terrible.
Also, maybe it's me who is thick, but Harrison spent 8\10 episodes being afraid that Dex abandoned him because of what a lil kid gonna turn out, while the letter that he had with him all that time and read multiple times, actually stated confession on Dexter's part that he leaves to protect the kid from himself. I mean... did he not finish the letter or smth?

Well, I wouldn't hate it if it had bit more time to brew. Because if it was established and fortified that Harrison now understand the code and it's importance, living with the regret ruining innocent kid's life, then it would make sense. His new yet established philosophy of "saving lives" is being thrown out of the window by Dexter, breaking his own code (and doing it easily). What really bothers me about how New Blood ends is that the authors try to force viewers that Dexter deserves to die. Yes, Dexter is a sociopath and he is not "a good guy" - but the whole premise of the series is that we follow a serial killer who tries to live, or pretend to live, a "normal" life while living out his dark desires. Everyone who watches the series has already bought into this and even though he sometimes makes dubious decisions (which on some occasions has led to the death of an innocent person), we cheer on Dexter. It's a TV series, it's fiction, we viewers understand that Dexter Morgan (or Jim ...) is dangerous and ... does not live a morally correct life. But like I said, we love the guy, and we who like the series will always "root for Dexter". Of course, I was not completely happy with the end of season 8 either, but I take it any day of the week compared to watching his son shoot him. My emotional connection to the character "Harrison" is about as strong as what I have to the character "Audrey" after 10 episodes. It seems to give no sense of justice or satisfaction, even though it was clear that the authors wanted to connect the story with that we as viewers would feel some kind of ... "it all kind of worked out for the best in the end". I call BS. Sloppy writing and yet another bad ending to a fantastic show that most of us rank at the very top of tv drama history.

I don't agree with your narrative. A lot of fans seem to think this season wasn't in line with Dexter and his own narrative through the 8 seasons. The things we know, he was a monster like he says himself, the reason Harry killed himself, he had created a monster. He doesn't have a moral compass, he has a code that is simply the most precious thing he inherited from Harry.
Fans seem to forget about Vogel. She "created" him, completely convinced he was the perfect psychopath that couldn't experience love or sacrifice. We discovered that he loved Deb, he wanted Deb to kill him so she wouldn't be forced to live like a monster while having no dark passenger.
Meaning: he wasn't a simply psychopath, a simply monster.
I cried and cried during the ending of New Blood, but the sentiment was fitting in my eyes. Dexter turned into a monster......he killed an innocent and tried turning Harrison into a monster, simply because he felt lonely. He wasn't truly happy Harrison felt understood, he was truly happy he could pass on the curse he endured.
So he turned into a true monster, realised it, showed love and sacrifice (which Harry thought was impossible) and truly tried to help Harrison by sacrificing himself.

@@SOSULLI I dont mind Dexter paying for what he has done, going to jail or even dying. But they ruined it when they had him kill Logan. The original Dexter would rather go to jail before breaking the code. It's why he didnt kill Doakes.
And Dexter was never a good person. He was a mass killer that would've done a lot of bad had it not being for Harry. The key part is when Harrison asked him how many people he has killed and he says hundreds. Harrison immediately says so you have saved thousands of people and Dexter never thought of that. He never once thought he was saving anyone or doing any good. All the killing he did was to satisfy his urges. He just happened to kill bad people.
They should've done a little reunion with Batista, or maybe have something more climatic and have him die to save his son. Plus they would not put him to death because someone that killed so many would make a deal and get life behind bars in exchange of giving information.
The ending was not THAT bad but to see Dexter after all these years dismiss the fact he killed Logan, a good guy, as someone that just was on the way made no sense whatsover. It's like they wanted Harrison to kill him and that's the reason they found. It's bad writting.

It was kind of all over the place. If you're a "fan" of Dexter you believe in his code. For most seasons the most precious thing Dexter took from Harry. So on the one side Dexter fit his own code, he was clearly prepared to do anything to secure his and Harrisons safety. On the other side the whole narrative we are familiair with is Dexter is a monster, he enjoys killing and takes his trophies. So no moral compass to begin with. He also believes people can't change (Dexter did discover that priest friend did).
But he wasn't a monster, he loved Harrison and Deb. He wanted Deb to kill him, he genuinely wanted Deb not to turn into a monster like him. She obviously didn't. Harrison was faced with pretty much the exact same situation and he chose for Dexter.

Another flaw was Angela being a terrible cop. Decades of not being even remotely close to Kurt as the killer and some of the missing girls coming from the cafe. And I thought the same about the staff not noticing the missing new employees in a town with a problem of missing women 🙄 especially since it’s such a small town. And add that to another decade of sleeping with a serial killer. She found dexter out quickly after being fed info but no excuse for kurt and that includes his son and that boat accident. Her not knowing about that cabin was preposterous also.

The proper ending: Harrison shoots, but does not kill, his father. Dexter is arrested, extradited to Florida and convicted of multiple murders. He is sentenced to execution but, in exchange for full cooperation in identifying all of his victims, his sentence is commuted to life without parole. The final scene is Dexter, in his prison cell, writing. "Moon. Glorious moon. Full, fat, reddish moon, the night as light as day, the moonlight flooding down across the land and bringing joy, joy, joy. Bringing too the full-throated call of the tropical night, the soft and wild voice of the wind roaring through the hairs on your arm, the hollow wail of starlight, the teeth-grinding bellow of the moonlight off the water.... " That is the opening passage of Darkly Dreaming Dexter, the first book in the series. The perfect ending is to return to the beginning. I can't believe they missed this opportunity!

I'm only interested in a season 2 of new blood if they fix the ending for episode 10. Start season 2 episode 1 showing that what happened with him escaping and being killed was all in his head and that he actually stayed in the cell, waited for Angela to return and used her lack of evidence and what he knows about Kurt to get her to agree to release him, then carry on from there for the next story which could be a new killer arriving in town that Dexter and Harrison deal with together whilst Angela still being suspicious of Dexter continues to try find evidence but is unsuccessful. Batista could arrive and we get the dramatic reunion of him both being happy to see Dexter alive but also kind of suspicious about him faking his death and what happened with Maria. The season could end with Dexter and Harrison leaving iron lake to make the new life in L.A before any other evidence is found.

Harrison didn't WANT to be a serial killer. He just wanted to love and acceptance from his Dad. Once he got it, he was able to make a choice about that type of person he wanted to become.
A major theme in the original Dexter and in New Blood was if Dexter was doomed to be a serial killer, or did he just accept his Dad code as the truth when in fact he could have changed under the right circumstances. Harrison was in a sense, "breaking the cycle", by shooting his father. He realized that he had free will to choose and going down that path with Dexter would lead to killing innocent people and he stood up against it.

He tells him to open his eyes and actually consider all the innocents he has hurt. But what if he chose not to be guided by Dexter and, instead of shooting him in the heart, he shot him in the knee? Dexter wouldn't have unleashed the 'New Blood' to drive on to Season 2. Instead, Angela could have taken Dexter back into custody, assured that he'd not get away with murdering Logan. Angel would have come up with all the evidence yo tie him in to the Bay Harbour Butcher murders. I had the same read on it you did. Killing Logan was a plot device that (lazy) writers thought would help turn audiences against Dexter to prime them for him needing to be dealt with by Harrison as Harrison becomes the new holder of Harry’s code.
They also clearly thought Dexter’s inner monologue about finally feeling love was poetic justice… Once Dexter finally found the thing he’d always longed for, that thing drove him to accept his own death… But I don’t buy it. The entire season was a slow burn of the main story while simultaneously racing toward a pre-scripted ending where Dexter is dead… Resulting in what felt like very awkward pacing followed by an unearned payoff, that I’m not so sure was actually a payoff at all… I would totally watch more seasons of Dexter being Dexter, for example… if they could catch that lightning in a bottle again… But I have zero interest in watching a spin off “Harrison” series. So, as an avid Dexter junkie, I’m left empty… With only room for my dark passenger to corrupt any previously held adoration for the show and its characters.

I sadly agree, the finale to season 8 of Dexter while felt underwhelming it still didn't take away the greatness of the show as a whole, whereas the finale to New Blood felt very rushed, unfortunately unfulfilling and unsatisfying causing the entire series as a whole to be muddied. I think if New Blood just ended things at episode 8 then everything will be fine but since the two episodes were added now I can't in good conscience reccomend this series to anyone. Ya the protocol Logan followed while passing over the meal, went for a toss while he had to pass a water bottle 😒
And Dexter killing Logan (a good guy) was so out of character for him. Logan didn’t fit Harry’s code. Moreover, Dexter would have walked out free as there was no evidence against him killing Mat.
I guess, the only reason Dexter had to kill Logan was that he didn’t want to face Angel Batista the next morning. He got so shit scared that he would be all over media as the ‘Bay Harbour Butcher’ that he panicked and broke Harry’s code. He realised his secret was going to get public the next day. He couldn’t live with it and had to escape the cell.
It’s just poetic that his son killed him. However, I strongly disagree with how Harrison had a change of heart. It was rushed by the writers, as everyone is saying in the comments.

I think it may have worked better if it turned out Harrison killed Logan.
Most of the episode stays the same up until after Batista is called. Harrison doesn't know what's happening, he's scared he's about to lose his dad after so long searching for him and finally finding common ground with him. Angela tells Logan that Batista will be coming in to provide evidence against Dexter but no one exactly knows what it is. Dexter overhears this and becomes anxious of what Batista might have but after a day or so, eventually comes to the realisation that it's over. We get a final inner monologue from Dexter like "Tonight's the night. And it will never happen again," echoing the common phrase. Logan goes to meet with Harrison in his hotel room. Harrison begs his coach, his only other role model and father figure what is happening. Logan knows he shouldn't say but he's grown attached to Harrison, even seeing him almost like his own son, so he tells Harrison that his dad may be going away for some time, and that the department is waiting on a witness from Miami Police Station. Horrified at this news, Harrison stands up from his chair in shock and starts having a meltdown. Logan gets up to try and calm him down, telling him that he'll be there to support him. Harrison in his state of confusion, terror, anxiety and anger lashes out at Logan whilst he's trying to calm him down. Harrison ends up killing his coach right there in his hotel room. With no safety net in place, Harrison runs away. Angela tries reaching out to Logan but to no avail. She tracks his phone back to Harrison's hotel and finds Logan's dead body.
Angela returns to the police station and calls for a search party to find and arrest Harrison. Dexter grasps the bars of his cell and demands to know what's happening. "Let me out! I have to find him! WHERE IS MY SON?!" he yells at Angela. She turns back around to him, gets slowly closer to him and tells him there is no way in hell she is going to release him. Dexter lets out one of his sighs, says "I'm sorry..." before grabbing her and slamming her head against the bars of the cell. To his relief, she's not dead but unconscious. He takes her keys, unlocks his cell and runs out of the police station. Dex runs through the woods, and goes back to his burnt down cabin. He finds Harrison crying, with blood on his hands. "I- I- I... I didn't mean to... I didn't mean to!" he runs over to Dexter and hugs him, looking for some support. Dexter hugs him back saying "I know..." Dexter tells Harrison it was a mistake, and he can get past it. But his dark passenger disagrees. The dark passenger, which has been on the side lines for 10 years, who has finally started getting it's satisfaction again, wants to engage, knowing full well that Harrison has killed an innocent person. It debates with Dexter inside his head whilst the hugging slowly gets tighter, hurting Harrison.
"DEXTER MORGAN!" Everything stops. The hugging, the monologue, the tears. Dexter lets go of Harrison in shock, he turns around and sees Angel Batista approaching aiming his gun at him. "How could you do this? How many people have died because of you? How did I ever think of you as a friend?" Dexter, for the first time has no idea what to do. He stands there in complete silence. "Turn around and get down on your knees..." Dexter does as he's told. He looks up at a crying Harrison on the floor. He can only do one thing now. "Harrison. Harrison!" Harrison turns towards his dad. "Run away." Harrison gets up and starts running away. Batista aims his gun away from Dexter towards Harrison shouting at him to come back. He fires a warning shot at Harrison whilst Dexter grabs a splintered bit of firewood and runs at Batista. Batista sees and makes a panicked shot but Dexter has already stabbed him. Dexter says "Nobody... hurts.. my son!" He takes the stake out of Batista and Batista bleeds to death there on the snow. Dexter turns to look for Harrison but feels a pain in his gut. He looks down and sees the bullet wound. He staggers towards the trees but falls on to all fours, unable to carry his own weight anymore. He looks back into the trees to look for Harrison but instead sees the white stag slowly approach him. He laughs to himself. "Tonight's the night...." He falls to the ground, eyes open staring into the heavens as the blood seeps into the snow, next to his old friends body.
    Cut to black, roll credits.

Plus your 100% right Dexter should have just set still in his cell and let it play out what Caldwell had done . He had enough evidence that Caldwell had been setting him up . Ok so here's the scoop: Michael C Hall apparently had made it pretty clear over the years post OS and pre NB that he didn't want to be Dexter forever and that if he were to reprise the role it would have to end with D being dead. Apparently the creator of this travesty literally came up with the shit ending first, allegedly because he has daddy issues of his own.
"It's like I was watching a completely different Dexter, one who had to fit the ending the writers wanted rather than the one we've spent 9 seasons following."
That's a bingo. This dude wrote a Daddy Dexter fan fic and the writing team had to accidentally lay 8 hours of decent tracks to get there.
Ding Ding, last stop, Shit Land.

My alternate endiing for the last episode:
Dexter has actually been in a highly anxious, unconsciously panicked state for a while time because Harrison kept getting in trouble and Dexter feels like his son is constantly in danger. When he was locked in the cell all of the anxiety started to act up. What if they interrogate Harrison and the kid says something incriminating? What if the thugs from before won't leave him alone when he's not around? What if Harrison acts up on his urges at a wrong time and wrong place, and gets caught? His training to a vigilante has barely even started yet.
So, Dexter did what he did to Logan. He'll feel bad about that later, as now he needs to talk to Harrison. He meets up with his son, who confronts him about Logan. Dexter explains to Harrison that he messed up, but he doesn't regret it did it for him and he would do it again. Harrison is angry and sad, so Dexter, overwhelmed with emotions, tells him to shoot him and points at his chest. For a while it seems like Harrison is about to shoot him, but he then lowers his gun. He has realised him and his dad both need each others, and he could never kill his own father. Dexter explains he would do anything for his son, even break the Code. They hug and leave Iron Lake together, and their story continues..

No confrontation with Batista. I think Dex could’ve talked him down. Leaving Angela frustrated.
I was 50/50 on Harrison from the beginning. The stabbing. The arm breaking. Anger at Dex, as the excuse. BS. what was all the talk about killing Trinity slowly? Did he kill the Truckers, who touched him on the way to Iron Lake?
Harrison is a liar. How do we know he didn’t find the letter. Kill Hanna. We have no proof/no scene of how she died.
I thought the same during the Logan scene. I thought Dex was going to grab the gun. Shoot Logan in the leg. Lock him up. Get out of town with lame a$$ Harrison.
Dexter didn’t have to die. I don’t get why some fans said he has to die. We know he’s a redeemed psychopath. We know he enjoys torturing and killing. WTF was Harrison talking about before he shot him.

As for Hanna, she has always been a foil for Dexter. Hanna and Dex have similarities. She supposedly went of to Argentina, lived on a farm, and died of cancer. This was Dexter's life in Iron Lake. Dex could have just stayed in that town being boring Jeff Lindsay. But no, he couldn't silence his dark passenger. Dex craves excitement.
Oh, well. The word disappointed isn't enough to express how I feel. LOL. I wanted Dexter alive and out of jail in the final episode. With or without Harrison wasn't an issue for me.

Also, the writers whiffed when it came to a face-to-face confrontation between Dexter and Angel Batista. That would've been epic. @randywhite327 2 роки тому +44

This ending betrayed the story, betrayed the characters and betrayed the audience, especially long-time fans. It turned Harrison into a murderer not only of his father, but of an unarmed man. (It clearly wasn't self-defense.) It made Angela into an accessory to that murder. In both cases, they lost whatever moral high ground they could have claimed and they became just as flawed as they thought Dexter was. It also made Dexter complicit in traumatizing his son by encouraging the murder. If Dexter thought his death was the only way to resolve this, he could simply have killed himself and kept any blood off his son's hands.
A better ending would have been Dexter having to choose between indulging his dark passenger by killing Kurt or by being a good father and turning Kurt over the law, showing Harrison that he might be able to control his impulses. Ultimately, Dexter could have made the wrong choice and been killed while killing Kurt, showing his dark passenger was his own demise and serving as a character lesson for Harrison, who stays in Iron Lake and is raised by Angela who helps him control his impulses. Much better ending, much more true to the characters and would demonstrate the old adage of living by the sword often results in dying by the sword (or, in this case, scalpel).
