- Sir Keir Starmer was surely hoping Labour’s conference would be a celebration of his landslide election victory - but with bitter briefings against his chief of staff Sue Gray coming from within No 10, more stories of ministers taking freebie gifts and a potential union rebellion over the winter fuel allowance - the new prime minister could face a very different reception in Liverpool.

And on top of all these domestic issues, the war in the Middle East is on the brink of spilling over into a wider war - with many delegates at conference demanding a stronger position from this government on trying to bring about peace.
On this special edition of the Political Fourcast from Labour Conference in Liverpool, Krishna Guru-Murthy is joined by Labour’s Emily Thornberry, who has held several shadow cabinet roles over the years and has just become chair of the influential Foreign Affairs Select Committee, and Katy Balls - the political editor of The Spectator.

@@Mchelsea2924 I wasn't, and this is more of same....as for "gifts" of such amounts that would keep a few families for a year...how arrogant and entitled. All MPs should ethically/ morally NOT accept personal presents as nurses, teachers etc cannot....and should do the job for ethics and wanting to do good for the country. Instead it's to forward themselves. Contacts and what will help them now and in future ,not for the people/ plebs.

How can Thornberry say that the donor hasn't been given any influence as Alli was given the Downing Street pass - and by no less than Sue Gray.

Tbf Lord Alli is a Labour peer and party member so he already has influence in the party but I think the issue that politicians that can be influenced through political donations is a big problem. I would reduce the amount of campaign fundraising and ban donations for clothes. If need be, provide an allowance for cabinet ministers clothes but rich donors should not be allowed to donate personal things to ministers.

I work for the council (government run) clear guidelines 8.2 The Council does not tolerate bribery or coercion of any kind. 8.3 Bribery occurs when you offer, pay, seek or accept a payment, gift, offer of hospitality or favour to influence a business outcome. Bribery and corruption can be direct, or indirect through third parties, such as family or friends.
Thank you for bringing that definition to peoples attention.

Pretty sure that Parliament is very clear in documenting the rules, e.g. this is from the House of Commons Code of Conduct, Chapter 1, section 23:
"Category 3: Gifts, benefits and hospitality from UK sources
Under this category Members must register:
Any benefits which relate in any way to their membership of the House or political activities, if provided by a UK source either free or at concessionary rates, including:
a) event or travel tickets;
b) hospitality in the UK, including receptions, meals and accommodation;
c) gifts such as clothing or jewellery;
d) club subscriptions and memberships;
e) loans or credit arrangements;
f) discount cards."
It was *always* against the rules to take the clothes and not declare them. It is morally wrong to claim you will be a moral arbiter to the electorate in order to steal power, then stick your nose in the trough as soon as you get in.

In terms of interests though, you've got ordinary people trying to live their lives as best they can despite many public services, the NHS, policing, education, border control, adult social care as examples, having been cut to the bone by 14 years of Tory thievery (Michelle Mone is not an isolated example), and then you've got rich people, who own media outlets like some of the print press, and their interests are generally paying less tax, or ideally no tax at all.
Thornberry’s electorate must be so satisfied with their choice. 🤮

Starmer has accepted more gifts than all the previous Labour leaders combined.
I work in the private sector and have to take a yearly reminder course that accepting gifts or favours of anything more than say a free pen or a branded diary (from say a contractor running a lunchtime CPD on their products), then it is a breach of ethics. Why do politician's not see that this is soft corruption but most companies outside the bubble so clearly do?
Everything else is whataboutery and outright denial by journalists and politicians.

Imagine being in your 80’s, arthritic, rheumatism, osteoporosis, waiting for a hip or knee operation, body broken from working 50+ years paying for societal demands.
