This is such a rich parsha. I appreciate what you said about raising children according to their nature because I too do not think that Esau was evil. He was just different. It seems to me that in spite of human limitations both brothers got the blessings which suited them most.
Avrum, the commentator you are referring to is the רש"ר הירש. He says the Torah criticizes Yitzchak and Rivka for not educating their sons in a manner that befits their unique personalities and strengths.
