On our rotation list. Kurt Russell can crush playing a character through an entire full length feature film speaking with just his eyes and facial expressions. Dude's a master.
That's a powerful scene. In that brief moment he helps heal that kids trauma, his own, and his men's, starting them all on the road to recovery and starting a new life.
It's one of the most powerful scenes in the movie, if not the best. Soldier may have been an action movie, but it was really about a service member who uncovered his humanity. I did a video of this very thing on my channel. Feel free to check it out and enjoy.
Particularly when you consider the dichontemy with one of the early battle scenes where you see Todd and his men having no problem shooting through human shields to kill their adversaries and achieve their mission goals.
Someone brought up the fact that realistically, most of the soldiers would never get in touch with their human emotions, and that many of them would probably die lonely and misunderstood, but I don't see it that way. I see it like Todd will be the first to slowly discover his emotions and how to be human, and as he learns what it means to be human, he'll teach his fellow soldiers how to love and feel, the same way he lead his fellow soldiers through battle many years ago. It's just a new type of war they'll have to fight, but I believe Todd and his men have what it takes to get in touch with their humanity after a long and challenging process.
When all said and done in the fictional world of soldier if people are going to nitpick at the most stupid things then a good argument for that is they are brothers. They were brought up together do horrible things together and each and everyone know each other even deeper than family. So if Todd is expressing his emotions and he is by crying when they kicked him out, then he can show the others it's okay to love, to learn to get on with other humans. This story is about no matter how brutal you can still be human.
Yep, not only that but those colonists are probably going to be raising families with those soldiers and they'll need not just the warrior skillset but homely skills as well.
Todd already had begun to reconnect and rediscover his human emotions. my take away from this scene was that Reilly and the other soldiers saw someone treat one of their own for the first time as a human. Not a tool, not a weapon.
I'm going to do a small documentary/analysis of this film, why it is so good, why it should get more attention and why it didn't when it was released. One of the greatest sci-fi films ever made.
Correction. One of the best war films. Our government has attempted to do this to children. It is called the MK program. So has Russia, so has China. They are grown now.
I watched this film and the Twilight Episode "The Changing of the Guard" (S3 E37) came to mind and the poem "I would be True" by Howard A. Walter. The Soldier will always need their Humanity and Humanity will always need their Soldiers.
I just watched this movie today and changing of the guard last night. I'm 62 and cried at the scene when he showed him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Its a prideful thing and I am so very proud of you.
These scenes hit me right in the feelz, the off-world colonists going to a new home having been saved by their warrior. His battle brothers reunited almost about to lose their minds at new emotions and feelings. Then the hope of a new future as the surrogate father and son stare at their approaching destiny. This is what the Bladerunner movies should have more of, they are set in the same universe afterall.
Reminds me of the first time I picked up my son. i did not know if I would ever be able to give him the emotional support he needed. But I could damned well pick him up.
I saw this film in my childhood and found it again after maybe 14 years or so. Dunno why I like this move so much. maybe, because it is anti-war and has lots of issues covered regarding soldier's life in society.
@Highland Silverback there is this saying that ww3 will be fought with highest technological advancements while ww4 will be fought with sticks and stones. I agree war never changes.
Yes, it's such a beautifully filmed sequence. Todd finds his humanity, the boy gets a father figure, and the score is wonderful. I analyze this scene and the main character in a video on my channel. Check it out - I hope you enjoy it.
I'd like another take on the Blade Runner universe. Soldier showed that there's a world outside of the usual cyberpunk detective story. There's a lot more going on out there.
The events of Blade Runner 2036: Nexus Dawn will coincide with the events of this movie (Soldier being a Blade Runner side sequel taking place in 2036) I think it would be awesome to see the connections made in Nexus Dawn
you may have strong words but actions are stronger and without actions.. your words are just words. in this movie the Soldier didn't say much but he did a lot.
"Socially awkward" doesn't begin to cover it. A child traumatized by a near-death experience finds a man deliberately brutalized to become a killing machine, but they connect through their shared pain and loneliness and start together on the road to finding their lost humanity.
Regarding his soldiers reaction to seeing him pick up the child. There's a line in an Irish song. "Though your message was unspoken still the truth in silence lays." It's a religious song but so descriptive of this scene.
Soldier was a box office flop but it's one of those movies you can watch over and over. Sometimes, a movie just doesn't find an audience at the right time.

The Bible mentions what every child wants and needs. Acknowledgement, love, and approval. That scene in itself speaks volumes. This shows he not just some soulless killing machine. That he has a soft side which balances out his cold, gruff exterior. It is called humanity and dignity.
