The right tool for the right job. To me, a shallow mouthpiece has less to do about playing high than it does about brilliance and speed. If you want a brilliant tone with a very rapid attack, then shallow mouthpiece. If you want a thick dark tone with a slower attack, then a deep mouthpiece. If you want to play low and lush, then a deep mouthpiece and wider rim. If you want the opposite sound, then a shallower mouthpiece and maybe a narrower rim. Really, I think rim size should always stay the same, whatever is appropriate for your mouth shape and so forth. Always keep the same rim size but make adjustments to the depth of the cup and the size of the backbore. A tighter backbore is for brighter faster playing, a more open backbore for darker sound.

i got a schilke 14a4a recently for lead jazz and today i was finally able to hit an E above the staff which is the highest note i’ve ever played. i got chopped out and pretty lightheaded lol but i plan to work on hitting it more consistently by practicing !

That is a very good all around mouthpiece, a good choice for lead playing. I had Schilke make me a custom piece, a 14AA4AA. It is extra shallow and extra tight backbore. However, my ultimate mouthpiece for lead playing is a Jet-Tone T-2 C. It is super shallow and super tight backbore, however, it has a rather open funnel leading down into the back bore which allows for a very full sound. It does not sound pinched at all. You can play extremely loud with it. Great for stratospheric range, but you also can play full and low with it, although of course with a bright tone.
But you are correct, the only right way to improve your range is by practice. Simply changing mouthpieces won't do it. You might play a bit higher, but it will sound pinched and forced. Practice playing the scales up chromatically at a time. Take a break between each scale. Also, In your warm up, play very low and soft long sustained notes before you start playing higher notes.

That’s what I use for lead playing too! My only tip is to try to increase your range on your deeper mouthpiece because if that increases then your 14a4a high notes will REALLY sound great

A lead mouthpiece is a great tool to teach you good embouchure. If you use too much pressure, it's pretty damn easy to bottom up and lose that buzz.
All the mouthpiece really does is make your sound brighter, and you use less effort to play as high.

How do I know if a mouthpiece is a lead peice or not?

    • @BillSmith-rx9rm

If it has a shallower cup or a tighter backbore, It may be a lead mouthpiece. If it has a brighter more brilliant sound and faster response, it may be a lead mouthpiece.
(I feel like that "you might be a redneck if" guy...LOL)

Funny thing is I've been playing with a 7c all my life and never tried anything else - triple high Cs (or I believe that's what they call it in english - I'm french) on a crappy trumpet no problem!

Playing high isn't about being "jacked up" although on second thought I think you were just using a goofy word

I think he was just saying like if your technique is incorrect or "jacked up" then the lead piece wont work for you anyways
