    You guys will appreciate this;, After fingerpicking acustics for 30 years ,the gods rewarded me last month with a Holy Grail, a $100 "japanese Averez" classical guitar at the pawnshop but was really a 1973 Juan Alverez blanco ceder top flamenco worth $5000. the crazy thing is, i could not have picked a better guitar, I never knew how perfect flamenco guitars are for aggresive fingerpicking compared with a classical, the difference is night and day!

    I preferred the sound of the more expensive ones in the first 2 rounds, but in the third I preferred the less expensive one. Given that the price of the more expensive guitar in the third round is mostly due to it's age and scarcity, that makes sense.

    • @SamiKankaristo
      @SamiKankaristo Рік тому +24

      Exact same results for me, except in the last one the difference felt smaller than in the first two. I think there's definitely diminishing returns past 10 grand. With those kinds of prices, it's more about the history of the instrument than the sound.
      If I played more classical guitar, I'd definitely be tempted to buy a Brune guitar, they've sounded great for the prices they go for.

      @@SamiKankaristo There is a collector's market. If the maker is still alive, the prices used will always be less than new, because you can order a new one, and Hill has a workshop with several employees. Fletas is dead, and his guitar was the one played by Sergovia in his later years, so there is appeal. Buyers in this price range are mainly concerned about resale value, and these guitars will only go up. The Hill is a more modern design, though Fletas' designs were also modern, just less so, so that will affect people's preferences.

    2 for 3 here. I preferred the timbre of the Fujikawa over the Jacobsen. Which guitar is more expensive isn't necessarily the best sounding to this listener! These videos are great fun, thanks guys!

      totally agree. First and 3rd tests were clear the more expensive ones were better, but I just didn't hear the obvious superior tone of the Jacobsen they were talking about.
      But what do I know?

  • @djdaniels00
    @djdaniels00 Рік тому +37

    I honestly got all 3 while using my headphones. The big distinguisher for me were the clarity of the harmonics, especially in the mid to lower tones. The less expensive guitars had warm but somewhat muted lower tones, where the higher-end guitars had very pure resonances and just sung very well.

    • @lemiureelemiur3997
      @lemiureelemiur3997 Рік тому +5

      Same, third one was a bit of a troll though, sound holes v not made that one nearly random imo. Clearly sounded boomier/messier but that might just be a trait for those. I sure as hell wouldnt have been able to guess between them with any certainty listening to an album though, except for guitars with additional sound holes.

    • @charltonpepper5317
      @charltonpepper5317 Рік тому +5

      yeahh i got all 3 with headphones and a soundcard lol to me it was in their sustain and decays the more expensive ones always had a more full resonance and the lower end was always more tigher and clear, i remember thinking everytime i picked one that maybe its just my taste , but i also know i have generally expensive taste, held true in this vid LOL
      also agree with @lemiure elemiur the soundholes threw me off too

    • @nickcoulter973
      @nickcoulter973 Рік тому

      I absolutely agree. The difference for rd. 3 was quite clear in the sustain after a chord. On the first guitar it sounded like the basses rolled off immediately, throwing them out of balance with the mids and uppers. I'm also thinking the sound ports played a role in causing that to happen.

  • @resolutist

    (No Spoilers) For me, Round 2 was the most difficult, as the others were very clear from the first note, especially the last. I could hear that those strings got to know their guitar and each other for much longer. I feel that Round 2’s lower price guitar was a fantastic option for that price point (think I got lucky in guessing it correctly lol). I was also listening carefully to Brandon’s playability and articulation, as I’d imagine each recording were first takes. Great video, and thank you both for involving the audience so much throughout this mini-series :).
    Edit: Very interesting to me seeing so many people like the first guitar in Round Three more than the second. I heavily preferred the latter. Just goes to show how we can interpret sound differently, and the color scheme of an instrument's tonality is completely subjective, despite the price.

So the difference could be heard through my very old and small mission speakers (MS-50) powered by an integrated micro sony systme (CMT-BX1) that received the analog signal from a cheap SMSL DAC/headphone amp (SD-793II) in my office with non ideally placed speakers. I mention this beacuse I was really not expecting to be able to hear the difference, I can´t imagine how different these guitars sounded and felt in real life.

    I knew round 1 was going to be that close in price; they both had desirable qualities, just different in one's preference.
    Called round 2 because it sounded like it was much easier to play those ornamentations, as well as you getting better volume response separating the melody from the harmony.
    Same with round 3, you got so much more out of the more expensive guitar. The melody sounded so clearly it felt to me like it was on a separate instrument, and the quietest bass strum had incredible sustain. (Also, Brandon was close to glowing when you played the more expensive one.)
    Glad I did so well with this video, because I was not as good the previous ones. Also glad because this is just my phone speaker and there's construction outside my window. Gonna have to get my headphones out to re-listen.

    I actually guessed the 2nd guitar each time. The first two rounds were very close to me. However, I totally noticed difference the Fleta had a more subtle and separation of sound. It was very pleasant to listen to.

    I enjoy all your videos and this one was fun! I do not play guitar and know almost nothing about them. I failed in every case; but, truly the less expensive guitar sounded deeper and clearer to my ears on the device I used. I would prefer listening to each. Thanks, Brandon! ❤️❤️❤️

      As I replied to another commentator, Brandon's playing is so good, it soaks up a lot of the variability.

    never mind the guitars because they're all beautiful anyway, but those classical music played just embraces inside, kinda brings memories from childhood even though I never heard these before.

    Man, this was really hard. The sound difference was definately not as big as the price difference for sure. It's also hard to say how much UA-cam impacts the sound. Definately a fun experiment

    I went 3 for 3. The first set was the easiest for me to tell a difference on. The second I had to sit with for a while, and the last I actually preferred the less expensive guitar's sound, but gambled and got lucky. Frankly, if it weren't for the rarity of that '62 in the last pair, I expect the Hill Signature would have been the more expensive guitar. So, 3 for 3 choosing correctly, but my ear was only about 1.5/3. I preferred the more expensive model once, was mostly indifferent once, and preferred the less expensive guitar once.

    Sorry, I had to edit the spoilers out of my commment! Round 1 I was incorrect. I felt the trebles were harsher more expensive guitar; round 2 I was correct. The mids in particular were so warm. But 3x the price doesn't equate to either 3x value or (importantly) 3x tonal superiority to my ear - but that is inevitable once you get into the high price ranges, as the law of diminishing returns kicks in; Round 3 I was incorrect! I even went back and listened again unblinded, but I still found the ringing trebles of (10x!) less expensive unbeatable. Is it just taste? I did a similar blind comparison on a violin site and got 4 out of 5 right, so I don't think I just have tin ears. Amazed by test 3. Thanks so much for doing this (and the previous 2).

    It was easy for me to pick the better sounding/more expensive guitar by listening even on the tiny iPhone speakers exept for the 2nd round where the cheaper instrument was more easy/mellow on the ear. We should not forget that judging by sound depends on the quality of our control speakers. Thank you so much for letting us know the sound differences in various guitars.

    Those damn soundports did me dirty! I'm ablazed at how much difference I could actually hear between these price levels and models.
    This defnitely is the shortest but most useful part of the series, while the others are quite comedic not to dishonor them.

    i got all three, though rd.1 was very close so i'd guessed they were close in price as well. rd.2 and 3 were obvious. the second guitars had sound that was rich and full and clear whereas the 1st were kinda tinny in the high notes and soft in the bass notes.
    esp. rd.2 that tune is simply magical on a sublime instrument. brandon i'm curious if you've ever felt the tears well up that what you were playing was so beautiful. that's what i felt listening to rd.2. with the jump up in quality of instrument, it was like seeing the sun through a haze and then it suddenly clears up.

    To me the note clarity of the more expensive guitar seemed to be very obvious in rounds 2 and 3. The less expensive ones seemed comparatively muffled and a bit muddy. In the first round I couldn't really guess. I thought both of those Alvarez-Yairi builds sounded very nice for the price though and both seemed to have a big bass response. I think the Fleta showed why it was the most highly valued guitar in this group. I thought it was the absolute standout without question.

    2/3, but I think it's much harder to do it through youtube's compression and my earphones etc. It's so much easier to hear the difference between guitars in-person vs through an online compressed medium

    I got 2 out of 3. Last one stumped me. To my untrained ears they were very similar in the high register for clarity and brightness, but it was the low end on the less expensive one that I liked more. Maybe slighter punchier and less muted. Both beautiful and played brilliantly in these comparisons.

    Interesting. The first two were pretty easy to nail. The third was tricky, and I did prefer the sound of the cheaper (but still quite expensive) guitar (and failed the test). All in all, it seems like guitar prices are reasonably rational.

    I gotta let you know, I saw your videos and you're one of the reasons I now want an arabian Oud, maybe an egyptian one as well. Persian setar, a persian tar, Indian sitar (or Setar..) arabian buzuq, Greek bouzouki, panduri, chonguri... And a few more, I'm sure.. I already own a martin guitar, a banjo and a spanish one. Thnx, haha. 😁
