Majaz :-
Asrar ul Haq Majaz (Urdu: مجاز لکھنوی, Hindi: मजाज़ लखनवी), (1909 - 5 December 1955), was an Indian Urdu poet. He was known for his romantic and revolutionary poetry. He composed ghazals and nazms in Urdu.
Early life
Majaz was born in Rudauli, Bara Banki, UP, India. He received his early education in Lucknow and Agra, and did his B.A. at Aligarh Muslim University. He considered Fani Badayuni as his 'ustad'.
He hails from a family of poets and litterateurs. Muztar Khairabadi, one of the great masters of Urdu poetry, was among his ancestors.He has a sister Safiya, who married to Jan Nisar Akhtar, father of Javed Akhtar.
Career
Majaz started writing poems while in Aligarh and soon became a popular among the masses and well respected among the literati. He became one of the front-ranking poets of the taraqqi pasand tahreek or Progressive Writers' Movement.
He is also well-known for composing the anthem, tarana, for Aligarh Muslim University, 'Ye meraa chaman, hai mera chaman, Main apne chaman ka bulbul huun.' "Aahang" and "Saaz-e-Nau" are two of his poetry compilations.
Majaz was madly in love with a woman. She married another man which he could not come to terms with. His poetry was greatly influenced by her and he remained unmarried all his life In Ranchi
After liberation of India, condition deteriorated and with the help of Josh Malihabadi Majaz was sent to the mental hospital of Raanchi. There he met kazi Nazrul Islam and recognized the poet. It is reported that he told the poet, "Why are you silent Nazrul, Lets go to Lahore/Dhaka, though they are in foreign country, there are asylums!"
Death
Majaz, a heavy drinker, died alone in a tavern located in the Beldari Lane of Lalbagh, on the cold winter night of 5 December 1955 in the heart of the city of Lucknow.

I adore this one for it's music. It's so upbeat and fantastic for a sad song. I wish I get to see the video of this song some day. Shammi Kapoor looks so young and handsome in the photo.
And while I was searching for who was the lyricist of this song, I found this awesome piece of info on this film, apparently one of Shammi Kapoor's first films and the lyricist Majaz.

Film "Thokar" is the movie in which Shammi Kapoor made his debut. He was only 22 then. He did have acting experience touring with Prithvi Theatre Company (his father's) playing bit roles in various plays. By this time, both his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, and his older brother, Raj Kapoor, have firmly established themselves in the movie industry as formidable forces to reckon with. So when he decided to make a plunge into acting in movies, not just one, but five producers signed him.
One great feature about "Thokar" is its music composed by Sardar Malik. The songs "Aye Gham-E-Dil Kya Karoon" are outstanding. These were written by the famous poet Majaz (his picture is given below). In real life Majazji was Asraar Ul Haq. He was uncle of the great lyricist of today, Javed Akhtar. Javed Akhtar's father, himself another great lyricist, Jan Nisar Akhtar, was married to Majajz's sister.

Sir- you are simplly great ! In the records, only two stanzas are sung. In the actual movie Thokar, three opening stanzas were sung by Talat Saa'b (I saw the movie as a teenager in1950s when it was released and primarily for this song) - the third stanza - "gair ki basti hai kab tak darbadar maara phirun " has been added by 'kknakhua kanakhua'' . Your love and dedication for music is examplary. Just for information of others, the actual 'nazm' was titled as "Awaara' by Majaaz 'Saab' and it is quite a lengthy one. The 'nazm' took the colur of 'ghazal' in the song and the movie, and beautifully sung by Talat Saab. Warm Regards.

Asha Bhonsle stanzas are not from Majaz Nazm - Awaraa. Had it been from the Nazm Awaaraa, it could have been a great long play film songs based on original shayeree.
No doubt that Talat sahib is at his best...

I love the Talat Saheb's version. He sang it with such pathos that the depths of emotions come through and through. However, both the shrillness in the female counterpart's voice and her "rushed singing" robbed those otherwise soulful lyrics of the due expression of the intensity of emotions.
