Spirit was last seen on 6/24, she is likely off o her own journey by now. Feeding behavior may be aquired instinctively or by watching any other birds or animals, not necessarily parents. Dozens of juvenile Bald Eagles have been released on the Channel Islands from hacktowers. If they needed parents or dedicated mentors to survive, we would have no eagles on the Channel Islands by now
In 2012, a third grader looking through a telescope was the first to spot an eaglet, but 'the biologist with her thought she was imagining baby eagles'. Kids can be really aware, and sometimes they're not listened to nor given enough credit! And I'm grateful banding has stopped in BB valley, (for now, and hopefully forever). I watched Lady Hawk's video showing the banding of eaglet DC9 from the National Arboretum DC nest (5/2022). At video's end, that fragile baby bird was cowering in the crotch of the tree trying to catch his breath -- he was terrified! And my heart went out to this helpless little being. So saving eaglets from that type of human intervention is a tremendous relief imo. Kudos to Sandy Steers for putting an end to this unnecessary intrusion.

Hi , Sandy I have a question regarding the nest. I am surprised it wasnt addressed. Does the forestry service or FOBBV have a tree expert that gives a update as to the health of the tree ? As well is the weight of the nest growing each year and posing a problem. If the weight of the nest does pose a problem of collapse. Do you think in the off season when Jackie and Shadow are not frequenting the nest, that it can be unburdoned of some of its weight by a professional climber. Perhaps by removing top layers of the nest to a point where its a non issue. ( Just curious ) Thank you for all that FOBBV and its volunteers do. Thank you Sandy and Cali Condor for a fantastic presentation about these beautiful Bald Eagles.
