Just a reminder that this concert is 25 years old. The fact that MJ is the first person who make Pop music as popular as it is today. He is ahead of his time and even influenced many pop bands around the world.

You're right, Smooth Criminal tells a story where this one guy moves and carries himself differently from the crowd, hence the title.
And that impossible lean was done by special bolts on the stage floor that slots into their shoes, anchoring them during the lean.
There will never be another MJ. He's just too unique.

Michael Jackson influenced like almost EVERYTHING about American pop music. For example, he was the first to do a music video with dancing. Before they were all like "first take" or a camera on the recording booth.
Yeah, he raised the bar so comprehensively that it's hard to imagine what things were like before. There's a parallel timeline out there where MTV looked like The Animals performing House of the Rising Sun on the Ed Sullivan show.
Yeah you could see his influence with a lot of RnB and pop stars in the 90's/early 2000s with Usher, Chris Brown, Aaliyah, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears...

@@GOTGames If I remember correctly, a lot of RnB singers (Justin Timberlake included) would dance around in a similar fashion to MJ and do the whole snap your arm in the air and grab your crotch move that MJ was famous for.
You can hear MJ's "ah/cha" sound that he does throughout all his songs in a lot of RnB music. You hear that a lot in Usher "you make me wanna".
They would also do the slow spin around twirl while raising and lowering their shoulders move that MJ always did. JT did that a lot.
It's been years since I've seen the music video and I can't verify it right now but I think JT "goes around" music video you can see him clearly dancing like MJ.

On june 13 2005 Michael Jackson was proven innocent on all allegations for child abuse against him, and the anniversary of his innocence was a couple of days ago. I was 7 when he died, but what the world did to him angers me to this day. Could you please write "Proof Michael Jackson Is Innocent" and react to the first video that pops up? More people should know what he went through... May the king rest in peace. The best performer and human being that has ever lived. There won't be another one like him. ❤

MJ Had a very difficult life all around sadly. He had a wonderful talent and a child like innocence. It's really upsetting all the horrible things he had to go through :(

Even young me would tell people " MJ owns a literal island named NEVERLAND... if he wanted to dilly children, he would buy them from a 3rd world country from willing parents and you'd never know of it. The King of Pop!!! Actually I feel like I grew up with him since we're the same age , and I've been a fan of him since I was 12 years old. I was lucky enough to see a live performance of him. It was absolutely amazing. And he had his magnificent dancers with him. He was a genius musician, gifted dancer and I think his impact on the world of music (and not just pop) was enormous.
Me too. I remember when MJ was a child and so was I hearing ABC - fell in love with MJ then. 😊

There are many singers, and dancers all over the world, but Michael was truly an artist.
The most iconic MJ performance is the Motown 25 version of “Billie Jean” which is the debut of the “moonwalk.” But, my favorite is the 1988 Grammy performance of “Man In The Mirror.” He really took you to church!
MJ was a force of pure skill, talent, and hard work. The man was truly gifted. There's a lot of little things that he did that proved it, such a good ear for music. He's the King of Pop for a reason, even if it doesn't show on the surface he influenced not just the genre but the whole industry.
P.S. The famous Smooth Criminal lean was in fact done with special shoes that had a slot in the heel that hooked onto bolts on the stage so they could lean way off balance.
MJ was a true showman. He was mesmerizing to watch, his incredible voice, the way he moves like he is gliding almost defying physics. He is one of the most incredible showmen of all time.
It's a true shame all the hurt and pain he went through in his life and the horrible allegations. He never had the life he should have had but the one place he seemed to truly seem like he was free was when he was on stage. Which is why he kept on pushing through the pain towards the end of his life, a large part of which led to his life ending :(

Yes the shoes connected with the floor and had to disconnected. Michael was so smooth you can barely tell. Regardless it was very difficult to sustain that lean and start the way back up. No small thing~
Michael Jackson was otherworldly. I did get to see him in concert twice. The stadium was filled with electricity. He walked on stage and the screaming was so loud he would actually have to wait till it died down before he could start his song. Honest to God‘s truth. And you’re right about everyone knowing his name. I remember, watching some news program and they said Michael Jackson is the most recognized name on the entire planet. Everyone knew him. No one will ever, ever match what he did. He and I are the same age. To be honest, I fell in love with him when I was 12, lol! There really is no way to describe the experience of seeing Michael Jackson in person. It was almost a religious experience. He commanded the stage with absolute mastery. He was a showman’s showman. He did his own choreography. And he was an absolute perfectionist. he would have somebody film him. He would sit and watch it then he would go back and tweak it and tweak it and tweak it umteen times until he had what he wanted. He was a relentless perfectionist. He was magical. I remember I was driving down the freeway when my friend in the passenger seat received a call that informed us that Michael Jackson had died. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. I drove the rest of the way home with tears streaming down my cheeks. As far as his influence on western culture, it actually was huge. As a matter of fact, Bruno Mars said he patterned almost everything he did after Michael Jackson. His influence here is absolutely everywhere. Michael took off a couple years where he stayed out of the limelight, nobody saw, or heard from him at all. When he turned 18 years old, he fired his father as his manager, and took control of his life and his shows and his music. And then one day, it was announced that he was going to be on stage again performing at the Motown 25th anniversary celebration. No one knew what to expect! But I’ll tell you right here, and now, that performance electrified the entire audience, and it was this performance that catapulted him into his separate career as a solo artist instead of with the Jackson 5. That would definitely be something you would like to react to. Please don’t look it up and watch it first! But that anniversary show lit the world on fire! There will never be another Michael Jackson. 💔I loved your reaction. If I ever get hold of a timetravel machine I’ll look you up so you could see him in person! I know that you would love him! Remember that back then, pop music was closer to the original meaning "popular music". It wasn't as much genredefined back then. MJ did a myriad of genres including rock, soul, funk etc. King of Pop goes more to the fact that he was THE popular singer. Modern pop has become a genre, which might be why you don't see this sort of presence anymore (at least in the pop stage). most modern pop artists have nowhere near that amount of genres under their belt, which leads to a quite monotonous characterization of the artists. You have to leave the pop genre, before you find the genrediverse musicians and artists.

Im a 90's kid and let me tell you, growing up, Michael Jackson always showed you something that you had never seen before. Whatever the new hollywood fx technology was, he'd use it first in one of his music videos.
His performances were an experience even from the perspective of someone watching them at home. The effort this man put into greatness is commendable and he was indeed the greatest music artist of the 20th century
There has never been and will never be an artist anywhere near the level of Michael. Not just the influence, but the pure passion and talent.
Really shameful how he was treated during his career, and still to this day. The lies about him will never end, unfortunately.

One of the most awesome nights of my life was seeing Michael Jackson in concert. We were the same age, so I grew up with his and his brother's music. When he went solo, I was ecstatic, because as great as they were together, there was something about him that demanded he be center stage. I was driving when it was announced he had passed away. I just remember having to pull over, and how all my friends and family called me that night. Not because I was a fangirl in the way I imagined we would marry and blah blah blah. But a fan because he was an artist and he was unique. He made pop music what it is today. My oldest daughter introduced me to BTS in 2014. She said my love of Michael Jackson made her think I would enjoy them. In the years since, total Army. Like Michael Jackson, they make you forget what is going on in your life in that moment and you get lost in their artistry. As well as their camaraderie, humbleness, humor, and sincere wish to do their fans honor by giving the best performances they can give. I'm lucky, I grew up during a great time for music, Because I some of the great icons........ Prince, George Michael, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner......icons all. And now BTS. Do the Osmonds count? lol

The fact that the accusations are still the thing he's most remembered for show just how thoroughly they can destroy your life, even if you're one of the biggest stars of the decade.

I recommend other live performances by him bro: Smooth Criminal live in Bucharest 1992; Human Nature live at Wembley 1988; Jam live in Bucharest 1992 (watch it from the official video of the full concert of Bucharest 1992 because the cameras show you how crazy people were going); Billie Jean live in Munich 1997 and Motown 25; Beat It live in Munich 1997; The Way You Make Me Feel and Man In The Mirror live at 30th annual grammy awards 1988; the complete performance on MTV 1995.

You mention that you see a lot more MJ influence in KPop than in western pop, and I think that is absolutely the case. One big cause of this is probably the fact that Lee Soo Man, the founder of SM Entertainment, was living in the U.S. in the early 80's. Michael Jackson's performances were a big part of what inspired him to create SM Entertainment and the KPop trainee model in general, which was then picked up by other production companies.
This trickled down to the company's artists, too - you can see MJ references and artistic inspiration in tons of SM releases. Off of the top of my head: Mr. Mr. by Girl's Gen, Love Like Oxygen by SHINee, Dumb Dumb by Red Velvet, and Devil by Super Junior all have lyrical references, style references, or dance style references to MJ, and lots of SM artists (especially Super Junior's Eunhyuk) have done dance covers and tributes to Michael Jackson. SHINee's Key and Taemin both take a lot of inspo from him in their solo work, too, especially Taemin, who is sometimes referred to as the Michael Jackson of KPop - check out his solo Danger for the most obvious example of this.
Probably my favorite, though, is the SM Town Michael Jackson Tribute performance at the Golden Disk Awards in 2009, which was right after he died. A combination of members from Super Junior and SHINEE covered Beat It and Bad - including Eunhyuk doing the CLEANEST moonwalk you ever saw outside of the man himself - and then Girl's Generation's dance line does a performance of Smooth Criminal that was CLEARLY based on this very performance, down to the color and design of the suits. It's old, so the only videos available are unofficial and low-quality, but I highly recommend checking it out. You can feel how highly they regarded him in their performance.
ADDENDUM: nope I lied apparently my favorite SM Town MJ performance is the Michael Jackson tribute stage at Gayo Daejun 2009. Super Junior's dance line covers Billie Jean - excellently, I might add - and THEN they are joined by THREE MORE boy groups from three completely different companies (2PM, Beast, and MBLAQ) to do the chorus of Beat It. It's obvious the other groups don't know the choreo as well, but it's also obvious that they are just as sincere in their tribute to Michael, and it's delightful to see four different KPop companies come together to pay tribute to him.

Michael Jackson was a perfectionist, he and the dancers would go through EVERY move until it was PERFECT...The dancers and even Michael stated that there were some dance sequences that they would go over for HOURS on end. The amazing choreography was HIS choreography and it took a extreme amount of dedication to get the dances correct. He put in as much effort as he had talent. 100% respect for this ABSOLUTE LEGEND.
The influence of Michael Jackson on the world of music everywhere is not to be understated. Now, I will say that style of pop music, with background dancers, choreography, etc, we sure had that in the West for quite a while, artists like Madonna, Paula Abdul, boy bands like Backstreet Boys, girl groups like Salt n' Pepper, etc. Its just that I think that style of pop music kinda faded away over the last 20 years or so in the west. But, it did trickle around and stayed around in countries like Japan with their pop idol groups, and subsequently filtered throughout Asia like Korea and China doing similar style of pop music.
So, yes I would say that without Michael Jackson, we would not have BlackPink. haha
You can talk about him as person, because he's innocent!

I don't want to sound hyperbolic, but seeing Michael Jackson perform live was like being in the presence of a God.
That Man had magic in His veins and when the pyrotechnics dimmed down, and it was just Him, I swear I could see lightning shooting out of His body when He moved.
He was a wonderful wonder.
And don't worry about who He was as a person. He was just as lovely offstage, too(smooth but no criminal).
Never separate the Art from the Artist.

I just watched a K-pop group react to Michael Jackson live videos, and one of the comments they made was that he dances SO WELL and they can't imagine being able to dance like that AND sing perfectly on top of that. And that's coming from people that do exactly that AS THEIR JOB.
Also I just got to the part of the video where you're talking about his influence on Eastern music, and I remember this group mentioning that MJ literally is one of the biggest influences on kpop performances
8:26 Michael Jackson invented a special shoe to enable that feat. If you look closely on the stage, there's a thing that pops up that holds the heel down. You can't see it under the show, but there's a hole under the heel of the shoe for that pop up to connect to. That's how they do it. It's the coolest dance move Micheal every did, and it was so cool in large part due to the invention to make it happen.

I had the privilege to see him Live in Chile when I was 13 years old, the only concert he did in this country, October 23rd, 1993.. and it was absolutely impressive.
He never had any formal dance training. He just let the music move him. Everything he did was a production. Most of his concerts had so many costume changes and each one was a for a different song so he could have the crowd involved at every turn.
The trick of the 45 degrees man is actually a patented invention by Michael himself. It consists in special boots/shoes with a mechanism that extends a metal piece that is inserted into holes in the floor. And the dancers have to stay exactly over the holes for it to properly work.

MJs Thriller album was released when I was 8yrs. Parents bought it for me, it has remained my number one favorite album of all time. I truly regret that I never saw MJ in concert, but I do remember whenever he was in town, the local news would play clips of fans being carried out on stretchers to ambulances bc people would be sooo worked up to see him they would pass out.
I had the immense good fortune to see MJ live quite a few times (starting at 4 years old when he was still in the Jackson 5, then at 12, 14 twice, 17 twice). And I flew home to L.A. from college in Tennessee TWICE to be in the first 10 rows for the last two dates of the Bad Tour in '89 (he got sick in November and the shows were rescheduled for January). And in the biggest luck-out in all of human history, I got to spend 5 days at Neverland in 2002 and see him be a regular dad. (Chris Tucker was a friend from before he was famous and we called ourselves "working" on some creative stuff - I'm a writer - but I'm sure no one will be surprised when I say that we didn't accomplish much; there was just too much fun to be had! 😁). Btw, the 80's was a great time to be a teenager if you loved music. I got to see Prince many times over the years too (got my first contact high during the 1999 Tour in '83 lol, and got on stage one of the 6 times I saw the Purple Rain tour in '85; also saw him in '86, '88, and three times when he did all of his old stuff in 2011). My first job was in a record store that had a Ticketmaster, so going to concerts was just something that we did on a regular basis because the tickets weren't expensive at all back then (we thought $25 was steep lol; the "Purple Circle" seats - 3rd row center - that allowed us to get picked to dance onstage were $100 though, and that was a LOT for a teenager making minimum wage in 1985).
In 2007, my mom and I had a conversation about music over dinner. We talked about the legends, including Michael Jackson. I was a teenager then, so naturally, I did not understand the hype around him. I grew up in a generation where people made fun of him and made his face a meme. My mom immediately dismissed my negative comments. She said back in his time, he was REALLY BIG. Few days later, she came home with my Dad bringing me a live DVD of his concert. We watched it right then, and ever since I've been a fan. Michael's message is inspiring. He often talks about injustice and destruction of nature. I joined a fanbase where we did charities, much like BTS Army does it. I am both a fan of MJ and BTS and I can see parallels in their intention, sincerity, love, passion for music, and the promise to do better. Their fanbases are also quite active in helping the society, no matter how small.
Michael was present during my growth years so he greatly influenced me and my interests. Because of him, I learned to love music in all forms, art in all forms, culture, and reading. I saw how systems work and I understood that media plays a big role in formulating public opinion. My mom tells me he is my "first love" as I immensely adored him. When he died I was so devastated. But his impact in my life lives on.
He became my standard to "showmanship" and talent. I refuse to support mediocre singers. That's why when I say I fell in love with BTS, it's saying a lot.
Yeah, I've seen him live. What it was like...well, I HAVE felt like that before, but it's a very special feeling. It felt very much like there was magic in the air. I've felt the same way about christmas when I was a kid, but that was also the only time I've fel like that. It felt very warm, loving and caring. And I culd tell that it wasn't just me, everyone I met had a similar expression of just pure, unadulturated joy, warmth & love.
Imagine the audience all being brothers and sisters and Michael being our father which we get to see for the first time in person, and up until then it had only been pictures, postcards and letters. And that through a christmas miracle santa shows up and gives us the gift of bringing Michael to us and he is able to come home and see us, hug us all at the same time and tell us he loves us.
I guess that's the best way of describing it.
I am very fortunate to have seen Prince & MJ (Bad concert) back to back.
That ruined me for anyone else that came after. Easily the two greatest concerts I've ever witnessed.
Michael Jackson would be my choice. Even now when I’m feeling down I will UA-cam any one of his full concerts and I feel so uplifted. We were the same age, and I grew up with him. I miss him to this day.

He's been gone for 14 years and I am so so blessed to have lived in the same era as Michael and still am able to enjoy his dancing and music. I followed him throughout his whole career good and bad. You're right there will be anyone greater than Michael Jackson....you should watch his performance of " The Earth Song " the message Michael sends is so powerful it will literally make you cry and the sad thing is everything he says in the song is the truth.
As you talked about MJ being king of pop I personally realized something else:
I personally think if MJ would become relevant today with the most known songs he had I am not even sure he would be for western audiences be fully considered a pop artist. I think most is way more alternative today and some even just straight up rock (Beat It, Dirty Diana, maybe Bad and more)
8:41 the "lean" was done with special shoes, they had like a keyhole in the heel, and there were little pegs that came up from the stage that they just hooked their heels into so they could lean over as far as they could without falling forward. When they stepped back of course the pegs retracted into the stage.

I got to see MJ in Honolulu on January 3, 1997! I was blessed to get front row seats and I have never been to any concert that will top it!!!
One of my fav live MJ performances was his 1995 "Dangerous" performance at the MTV awards show. 💛💛💛💛💛OMG You will lose your mind.
After following him and his bothers since the late 60's I had the privileged of seeing him in concert twice in 1981 & 84. I consider it a blessing and an honor. I knew at the first concert that I was witnessing greatness(pre-Thriller). I never imagined how great that would be. RIP MJ.

MJ is arguably the most famous person to ever live I don't think there is a spot on this planet you could go that didn't know who he was. Even the sentinelese tribe probably knew who he was
With how they did that lean, it is actually special shoes I think Jackson actually had a patent on them, there are nails in the stage that the shoes can hook onto allowing them to do that, there are actually vids out there of one of the backup dancers not quite hooking onto their nail fully and nearly falling on their face.
The entertainer was a perfectionist and made sure that every performance was the best it could be.
I saw one concert of this exact tour in 1997 in Germany. It was amazing and MASSIVE. And remember, arena shows were not common around that time^^ He filled a soccer stadium.

I've seen several concerts by him. And each one was ecstasy and pure magic. I even had tickets to some This is it shows that unfortunately never took place. The Leaning forward is an invention of Michael Jackson. He also has a patent on it.
The way the so called anti-gravity lean worked was that Michael was wearing shoes prepared in such a way that they're sorta hooked into the floor. Michael however still needed to show alot of physical strength to not just hold his position while on such an extreme angle but also to get back upright again.
My 12th bday I had a Carvel MJ icecream cake, and got shades that reflected MJ when the sun hit them. I had his first album on 33. He's a badass.
As much I agree that Michael was massively talented, I’m finding myself more and resenting that term because it doesn’t give enough credit to MJ, Fred Astair, and all the other giants, for the sheer amount of work, time, and effort they took in honing their craft and each individual performance. Talent will only take a body so far. To be truly great requires endless dedication.

I'm not sure if you ever did see the official music videos for him, but they are all super high production like watching a movie or tv show. It is funny that you mentioned that watching him is like going on a ride at Disneyland because actually he does have a ride called "Captain EO" that has him in the ride although I'm not sure it is still there anymore.
Yeah the makeup for stage always has to be exaggerated because it is meant to be seen from as far away as possible. I think you’re trying to say it’s like pop comic outlines. But Michael never called his music videos, music videos. He called them films. So he does consider his fellow performers characters, himself included. I remember when he died my friend messaging me on db the next day from Italy going “did I just see you bawling on tv on cnn? I’m in Italy” lmfao. I went to his house his parents still lived in at the time (Katherine is there still) and brought black and white balloons.

even with specially designed footwear and the support of the hitch member, the move is incredibly hard to pull off, requiring athletic core strength from strengthened spinal and lower-limb muscles.

I saw MJ three times, once as a kid with Jackson 5, and at Madison Square Garden 1982 and again in 87. He was phenomenal and definitely put on a good show when he was solo. You missed out on great ones - Prince was another showman who amazed us at.a smaller venue during his first real tour for his Controversy album. He had a less than wholesome song collection.

I saw an extended Smooth Criminal video at Disneyworld Epcot in 1986. Because of that, I had to laugh when you mentioned Disneyland/Disneyworld. Back then, Disney World was just Disney World and Epcot. Those were the only two parks. And the theater where you could watch the video was the only place in the Epcot park other than restaurants that was air conditioned. I lost track of how many times my friends and I sat through the video, just to cool off for a bit. Lots of memories associated with this song.
The trick with leaning forward is thanks to gravity boots. There is a nail on the stage floor that slides inside back of his boot. And that’s how he can lean forward without hitting the floor.
Talking about Kpop and Michael. IKON danced Billie Jean on a show some years ago and it was on a dance competition. They won that day, even Michael's Jackson twitter recognized them for that performance.
It's really cool that you meantioned eastern pop and how it's been influenced by MJ.
There's a few videos I watched a while back with Kpop and Jpop groups reacting to MJ's live performances and many of them said the same thing. They talked about how much he influenced their industry in terms of showmanship, stage presence, dancing, and singing. So much so that they were able to identify specific MJ dance moves that they actively use and incorporate into their own performances!

I'm sure someone else probably said this in the comments somewhere but the lean was actually a design patented by Michael Jackson himself, there's some kind of hook system in the floor that they attach their shoes to if they stand in the correct place (you can kind of see the spots when they do the top-down view before they do it).

The lean forward is accomplished with “nails” sticking up from the stage and shoes with slots on the heels. If you watch carefully you’ll see they slide the heels off the nails after the lean. Very clever.
