      That would be Randy at Karamat. He took his equipment with him to the Woodsmoke event and suggested that we have an interview with Dave and Larry. Dave also interviewed Mors. Great information and a great legacy.

    What an incredible delight to watch this. My first impressionable book as a child more than 30 years ago was Outdoor Survival Skills. Larry Dean Olsen has been my lifelong mentor and hero, although I have not had the pleasure of meeting him. I am a huge fan of the Anasazi program and have been told some very personal stories from members of that great organization regarding his teachings and actions. Thank you for letting me enjoy the life of this kind, good man!

      You are right about that. There are quite a few of the old timers that are passionate and have great knowledge. I would have to say our mentors and the ones that passed on a lot of knowledge so that many others could teach others. The ones you mentioned are among them.

      @Karamat I watched Mors when I was around 10 on "On the Road Again " in the episode he had a class out cooking chicken and rice stew under a parachute ...used a canoe in winter to haul gear ....I ate lunch that day...pack up a backpack and tarp at 10 years old and failed at making a fire in the snow and wind ...was hooked on skills ever since ....all afore mentioned men stoked those passions in so many....and so has Karamat 🙏 so thank you I appreciate it always ...

    I have his book, Outdoor Survival Skills. Excellent read, I find it fascinating how he grew up in the desert, being born into a lot of the skills and lifestyle. I truly envy those that get to spend the majority of their lives in the wild. If only it were 1890.

    Olsen's book was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Read it cover to cover, I so wanted to make my own bow but the right tree killed by fire was rare by my house in suburban Chicago... and deer tendons for the bowstring were also difficult to come by! At least that's how I remember the book said to make it, it was 40 years ago and my mother threw it away long ago! And here am 40 years later and was thinking about that book, and even remembered the author's name, such was the fascination I had with it. So I googled "Larry Dean Olsen" and up pops this wonderful video!
    Also, for the first time in my life I'm going deer hunting this fall... which is what prompted that childhood memory in the first place. I still remember Olsen's instructions on how to stalk deer, that when they're eating they see only the grass in front of them and you can sneak closer. Stop when they raise their head... maybe I get a deer in November! But I'm using a shotgun with slugs instead of a home-made bow lol.

      Great history and great that you’re getting back to it even now! It’s been four years have you kept up your hunting? Using a shotgun is similar to bow in that a closer range is usually necessary.

      @@OverOnTheWildSide Well I've gone deer hunting 4 times now, still haven't got one. It's tough on public lands in Illinois, but eventually I'm sure I'll get one! There is an antlerless season coming up around the New Year so maybe I'll finally get one then...

    • @OverOnTheWildSide
      @OverOnTheWildSide 2 роки тому

      @@SSHitMan at least you have an antlerless season. Where I am it’s 3 point (6 point for you I think) minimum.
      Are you still using a shotgun?

    • @SSHitMan
      @SSHitMan 2 роки тому +1

      @@OverOnTheWildSide Yes, shotgun is the only legal firearm for that area. Rifles are illegal to use for deer in Illinois, except for muzzleloaders. My shotgun, however, has a fully rifled barrel and shoots sabot slugs.

    I started learning from Larry in November of 1979. He taught me more than I can quantify in words. I'm grateful for the time I spent with him in Idaho and Utah and at Miracle and to have met and spent the time I did with his family as well. It was at Miracle that also did an apprenticeship in Massage Therapy as well and all of what i learned from Larry personally as well as all I learned as a result of knowing him has remained with me to this very moment and has been without price in value.
