Application Note #44: Software Instruments in Logic 2 for iOS/iPadOS
Today's date is Sunday May 19th 2024. 6 days ago Apple released a new version of Logic for iOS and iPadOS logic 2. This new version of Logic is very different in how it records software-based instruments that have their own keyboard. In fact out of the box it won't record these instruments. You're going to have to do something special. This video will show you what you need to do.
So here I am in Logic Pro 2 for iPad OS I'm going to create a new track project and a new midi software instrument. I'll click on the middle knob tool and create an instance of GeoShred. Now I'll click on the upper right of the logic keyboard to slide it off the screen. If I click on the outline of the GeoShred window, it will bring up the full GeoShred user interface. Now if you click on the record mode button in the lower left, GeoShred will take up the full width of logic's user interface. By grabbing the top of the window for the GeoShred plug-in instrument you can stretch it up and down.
Now let's do a simple recording. It doesn't look like anything was recorded and we'll try to play it back and nothing will play back. Recording MIDI from software instruments is now different in Logic 2. Here is what you need to do to be able to record MIDI from software instruments. In the lower left the middle track controls button will bring up controls for the current track. If you tap on "MIDI In Channel", you'll be able to select "Instrument Output" as a source of MIDI to be recorded to the track.
Now let's try recording again. As you can see MIDI was recorded and we can play it back.

Can you use it in GarageBand?

Yes, GeoShred is an app and an AUv3 plugin. You can use it in iOS plugin hosts like Logic, GarageBand, AUM, etc, etc.
