This is exactly why I prefer their later stuff. I love the grittiness and that they've become better at utilising their different voices. They're an excellent example of "let your groups mature and nurture and stimulate their creative development".
They way they started blending in rock, grunge, and punk into their more recent stuff has been a fun thing to watch. Baby emo TXT is a total soft spot for me because they are such sweeties so its adorable but fun. Such a bop.
I think that as their music is telling the story of growth / youth it makes sense their style develops and changes along the way. I also think even their sweetest songs (the ones I guess helped you as "palate cleansers") have a darker undertone if you zoom in. I believe the only "pure happiness" songs they have are the ones for MOA
Good Boy Gone Bad is the title track from their mini album Minisode 2: Thursdays Child. The concept of the album relates to a relationship, and each track represents one of the 5 stages of grief with Good Boy Gone Bad representing 'anger'. So this is another reason I think this feels so real (apart from the fact that they are so passionate and good at expressing their emotions) the feeling of this song is part of a whole concept through the different songs across the album. (You'll see more explanation on that website I shared with you). Their song Opening Sequence (amazing song!), which is coming up on your list, is the opening track on this same album has a completely different sound and represents 'denial'. I love this song and the MV. As someone else also mentioned even majority of their brighter songs are definetly dark in a sad way particularly in relation to the lyrics (even CROWN as I previously mentioned) it's just not always as obvious to a casual listener or until you look into it. The sound of their songs changes with their album themes and goes through different phases with the process of growth, growing up and going through different things in life, so it all makes sense and of course fits the theme of the song/s. Even though their heavier sound is more prominent now, their song styles have always been diverse, and they do still have brighter sounding songs. Eg. The Title track Chasing That Feeling from their latest album (the same one as Growing Pains) is an upbeat song with an 80s sound. 🎶
ooohhh! ok, that makes sense, and explains a few things, that is an interesting concept! I have started to notice that darker side even in brighter music you're talking about
I was excited when I saw this song on the setlist for this week because it was covered on Peak Time last year and I loved it but I'd forgotten, or maybe I wasn't paying attention at the time, who the original artist was. Such a great song and now that I know it's TXT I would definitely rank it as my favorite song of theirs so far.

100% I do need to see more of their early stuff

That very well could be, I do remember thinking it was very bubbly, but I was a lot more blinded back then
