I experienced the insecurity first hand as Salvadorean, we used to leave home not knowing if we were coming back, my neighbour and her teenage daughter were kidnapped, killed and found on black garbage bags on the side of the road, none one had the courage To ask what happed because if you did the MS13 could come and killed you too because guess who killed them, my other neighbour was shot and killed at this business because he couldn’t pay the money the Gang was asking. We had to pay the so called rent to the Gang to be protected from them … how non sense is that. They had a rule if you see or hear anything be quiet. They controlled who could come into the neighborhood. It was insane at that time to think things were going to change. We all had the option to be better and get a decent job but they choose not to. We don’t need to explain to anyone why we approve Bukele’s policy… I never in a million years thought that the situation in my country could get better but thank God it did and I am extremely happy and thankful. I think a lot of people in the comments are missing the point. No one cares about the human rights of the criminals who murdered innocents. The human rights issue is that the military has power to imprison people without evidence or a trial, against the verdict of a judge, or based on anonymous tip-offs which could easily be someone trying to settle a personal issue. The concern is for the thousands of cases of innocent people imprisoned in these conditions, with some estimates being 1 in 6 people in the prisons are arbitrarily detained.

That means for example, in the picture at 0:13, out of the 41 people on the screen, around 3 or 4 of them are completely innocent and have had no relationship with the gangs *whatsoever* . During the crackdown on these criminal gangs, the police literally just imprisoned *anyone* who even just looked vaguely affiliated with gangs. If you were a person between the age of 15 and 40, and you had visible tattoos, *you were going to jail*, period, full stop. If you lived in the same apartment as a gang member, you were going to jail. If your neighbors said that they saw people who "looked like gang members" enter your home, you were going to jail. What is the exact number of innocent people jailed indefinitely with no trial date scheduled that you are willing to accept?

Well, it's justice if you believe that el Salvador has a 100% accurate and perfect justice system. And it is a violation of human rights, but that doesn't mean it isn't necessarily justice. Human rights is just a broad agreed upon standard of treatment. If you want to below that standard, justified or not, you just have to admit you are fine with violating human rights under certain circumstances and occasionally accidentally torturing innocents. Which is fine, bu5 don't be a pansy and pretend otherwise.

Is jailing (arbitrary numbers) 100 innocent to prevent 1000 deaths necessary. He argues yes. Whether or not thats right is completely debatable and even I have some apprehension if we did the same in America to reduce rampant crime and gang violence. @changbinnie4030 2 місяці тому +25

There is SO much you have to know about this situation to comment on it. The people of El Salvador have been suffering since the civil war in the 1970's! Then, as people fled a HORRIFYING war they sought refuge in other counties and had to experience poverty and did what they could to survive. Young boys and men were introduced to gang culture and that eventually found its way back to El Salvador.
With corrupt governments taking over as people tried to rebuild what such a senseless war took from them, violence was encouraged. Today the people of El Salvador are finally experiencing PEACE for the 1st time in about 50 YEARS, if you have something to say about human rights, I suggest that you look into the whole situation instead of just blindly yelling "HUMAN RIGHTS" at the top of your lungs.
There may be a small percent of people in these prisons that did not personally commit a violent crime, but marking your body with those symbols means that you encourage and stand for what today is considered domestic terrorism in El Salvador.
I have family that could not even go to college without permission from the "Homeboys" first otherwise, they would have gotten killed on their commute. These men did not care about the rights or quality of life of ANYONE around them. They would kill their own friends and family for stepping out of line or if the big guy told them to.
Some people did slip through the cracks, and that is HORRIBLE. But, now that senseless violence is discouraged Salvadoran children HAVE A FUTURE. They do not belong to these criminals anymore. There is more tourism than ever, there are more jobs than ever and people don't have to be scared to go to work/school.
Please consider that before getting on your soapbox.
    Thank you for reading

Constructing a prison-like "CECOT" is asinine. Having a huge prison population rate is a horrible thing to have in a country. Something should be done to cut down on the prison population while also freeing them to live their lives. Poor conditions and human rights are violated in those mega prisons, which is terrible. Think if it was you who was abducted by corrupt Salvadoran officers and forced to be sent to that facility. Just imagine. Imagine being caught and forced to live in SC for 15 days.
