I live in Colorado and have never been to Duluth or Lake Superior. Watching these big ships come in makes me want to travel up that way in the near future!!👍
Tough question Mike to pick a favorite. If I had to hand 🖐 on heart ❤ I’d say the Alpena. She is such a pretty, well-maintained, old school laker.
Now that’s a great answer! How could that not be at the top of the list for many? So many people come out when that ship comes to town!
I am originally from the midwest, I love seeing these big freighters thank you for showing them... I appreciate it so much
I know exactly what you mean. I love watching these ships as well. I hope you subscribe to my UA-cam channel. If there’s one video that I want you to see, it’s this one right here. Wait till you see how cool atmosphere was with the lake and sky. ua-cam.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/v-deo.htmlsi=4ppLu_RVLFsRSkkc
hi Mike, and all our dear "boat friends" fr Maryland 🦀 72°
Happy Labor Day 🇺🇸
It sounds like a wonderful day in Maryland today. 72°! Sign me up! ⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
The James R. Barker is my all time favorite for his Horn. I also like the Phillip R. Clark and the Anderson....for her history. Learning all these amazing ships from YOU!!!!! Thanks, Mike!!!
Elizabeth, there is absolutely no way someone could argue with those being the best ships. Everyone of these ships have something so cool about them. Each of them individually.
I would enjoy seeing a ship unload.
Thanks for your efforts showing the shipping industry in Duluth.
Charles, hope you’re having a wonderful Monday my friend. Check out this video that I posted today. There’s quite a few different things that I think you’ll enjoy it from a perspective standpoint. ua-cam.com/video/c2kUN7LdmU0/v-deo.htmlsi=mm9Zag3YHQl6mFQO
Happy Labor Day, Mike. For me, it is a tie between the Paul R. Tregurtha and the James R. Barker. I love the distinctive "bark" from the Barker.
Francis, how can you go wrong with those two ships! I don’t even think there’s a tiebreaker for those. Totally even! Have a great day my friend! ⛴️👋
Beautiful pivot. Love those turns. Thanks.
I’m a big fan of the turns as well. It’s so tough to do but those captains make it look easy.
Hello Mike happy labor day and happy Canada day to all my Canadian people thanks for more videos I'm so glad I found your channel I love it chow for now Mike from Brantford ontario canada cheers ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You’ve got me hooked!
Love the channel…
I live not far from Lake Ontario and have always been a huge fan of the big ships. Keep the videos coming and don’t hesitate to hit up the Chamber of Commerce in Duluth for some $ as I’m sure the channel has helped bring in tourists
Ha! Tell the Duluth Chamber of Commerce to donate to my PayPal!😂 I’m so glad you found the channel Frank! I hope you’re having a great day man!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
This lady is the One of a kind PRT. What a proud Queen of the lakes she is. I am arriving let those that can follow. You always make my day Mike!! Stay safe. Peace!!
Love your videos! You should have a live and on sight "Vibe with Mike" lakeside party!
It would definitely be at Park Point someday if we do it! Everybody shows up with a captain hat on? That would be fun. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Near Peru Indiana. The Stewart J Cort is my fav. Largely because she was the first footer I ever got to see in person. The Anderson is a hard second largely because of her history, and I just think it is a beautiful boat. PRT is #3 for me. She is certainly an impressive presence on the Lakes.
How can a person go wrong with the Stewart! An absolute monster and so unique knowing that it is two separate parts put together with that front/bow section
I love the pivots in the harbor. I also love the up-close views from the pier. What an awesome ship the PRT is. A behemoth that’s smooth as silk. I can’t even maneuver a shopping cart in the grocery store as well as the PRT captain whips this 1,013 footer around!
Boat Friends, our friend Sam sent this great information to me via email. Here’s the copy/paste.
“A 100 car coal train consisting of 120 ton coal cars can deliver approximately 12,000 total tons of coal.
You can divide the total tonnage of one of those THOUSAND footers by 12,000 to estimate how many TRAINS worth of coal ONE SHIP can carry.
So ONE 36,000 ton Laker can carry THREE 100 carTRAINS worth of coal.
That’s impressive to be sure!!!!!”
Watched it live this morning and just watched it again. What a boat.
You guys have to find out where they're gong so we can see them dock that.
It’s on its way to Michigan. You have a great profile photo! Awesome image!
Hi Mike, sorry I missed you live, I was on the road, visiting family in Oklahoma. Great video, the PRT never fails to impress the people watching her come in. Thanks for sharing this one!
Thank you Mike for marvelous coverage of PRT coming into Duluth. It is one of my favorite shops...hard to have just one. The James Barker is on the list. I am watching Thursday after Labor Day...68 degrees in St Cloud MN
I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
She's a Beauty, defo my fave ,for the sheer size alone !Thank you from England !👋
Hello, my friend from England! The sizes unbelievable. I hope you’re doing wonderful. Thanks for the comment. Come on back again!👋👋👋⛴️⛴️⛴️🏴🏴🏴🏴
I can't believe her beauty! Thank you for sharing this video. You do an amazing job. Thanx for the info. I love learning about the beautiful ladies of the lakes!
I’m really glad that you enjoy these videos. I will be out there to live streaming a lot now.
Mike, I really am gleaning a lot about these different ships and their history. The Arthur Anderson's history is pretty much unbeatable at this point. I'm from western NY state, the lake Ontario area and ships weren't such a big deal there.....that I know of. Been in the south all of my adult life, so I've missed out on the Great Lakes comings and goings. Thanks for all your efforts to bring it to me in real time!
Trust me on this, when you have about a half an hour, please listen to this. It’s the most fascinating piece of audio and you literally get sucked into that night when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. This is the actual Coast Guard audio from that night. You’ll hear the Captain of the Arthur Anderson agreeing to go out to look for Fitz. It’s unbelievable, it starts at 20 seconds. ua-cam.com/video/C0Nk7Ou6YUg/v-deo.htmlsi=PZof4iAjse29GImx
@@vibewithmike wow, just listened to it. Capt of the Anderson was pretty hesitant about going back with the conditions of the storm. At the end I heard him mentioning the mitchipicoten?
@elizabethw4519 it actually pulls you in to that moment. We know what happened but at that point they really didn’t know. Unbelievable. I did hear the Michipicoten name too. I think he’s talking about the actual location in Canada. It’s an unbelievable piece of audio Elizabeth, chilling, fascinating, and historic at the same time.
It's capt'n Bill in Grafton, WI @ 74 degrees. Greatly appreciating your labor on Labor Day to share GL's boating on Lake Superior and me on Lake Michigan. Hat's off to you skipper as you provide superior UA-cam viewing on Superior!
Captain Bill! Always great hearing from you brother. It’s a great day so far in Duluth. It sounds like it’s going to be the same for you! I’m glad!
Happy Lanor Day ship fans. Looks like a nice comfortable day in D Town. Muggy here in Bismarck and 90 degrees so will get storms tonite. I call this ship “Big Hoss” as is a stone cold monster. Wish I was there as a Walleye Sandwich at Gramma’s sounds pretty good, then maybe scoot up to Betty’s Pies for desert!!! This guys barks like a prairie dog with his salute and cannot wait hear!!!! Over 3 football fields long, imagine that. About 3 times the capacity of the Fitz……. Wow!
Happy Labor day to you Mike. The PRT is my second Lake Freighter Mini paper model and it is nearly finished. Great display ship.
Karl!! It’s a pleasure hearing from you my friend.
I hope you are having a very relaxing day .
Watching video 1 hour after posting. As always your video is great. Looking forward to the video tomorrow shot from the boat.
Hey Beetle, you want 100% will enjoy the one tomorrow. I can’t wait to show the ocean going ship.
I'm always amazed how ships of that size stay afloat.
Then it looks like top of ship is going to hit the bridge.
Thanks for posting.
Kathleen, I thought about that many times as well. It’s like having a downtown skyscraper laying on its side floating. It’s such a massive ship. Thanks for watching friend.
Candace from Port Charlotte, Florida Thank you I was originally from Indiana love to see these ships....
Did not catch the live buy loved the video and especially the pivot. Love watching the ships turn.
AWESOME ! Seeing the people in awe of these ship's and that bridge gives me hope for humanity no matter what.

Hey Mike, love what you do here. Quick comment for the people just learning about ship terms... port and starboard. Port is left. Best way to remember that is port and left both have 4 letters. Thanks again for the great content!
Hello Andrew! Great hearing from you. Exactly right, port and left, four letters! I grew up in the big city of Minneapolis (zero ships) and would never have believed that I document ships on Lake Superior right on UA-cam. I am a huge advocate for asking questions and learning. It’s all about having fun and adding some knowledge about these ships and the maritime industry. I hope you are having an awesome Tuesday.

Mike - These are great videos! I've been to Duluth a few times. I never found it interesting until I started watching these videos. I don't know if you are able to get to the actual docks, but if so it would be informative to see a ship dock and load/unload it's cargo.

Happy something something holiday Mike!
It’s not even noon yet and we already saw the PRT. That’s a legit way to start the holiday.
You have to admire the captain of the PRT. He navigates this ship like it's child's play. I wonder how long he's been sailing this ship.
Love your channel.
Tim! I really appreciate you saying that. I’ll keep bringing you the ships videos brother!👋⛴️
I think a fun perspective could be from the hillside of Duluth looking down on the harbor. I've often wondered from how far away the horns can be heard. Watching the pivot would definitely interest me.

That aint a ship yall, thats a damn horizontal *SKYSCRAPER* pushing itself through the water! What an awesome ship though! New sub! -Sidenote: Im in the middle of the Mojave desert, very close to Death Valley, ZERO WATER, zero boats and its about a billion degrees, give or take a couple of degrees...lol. Exactly! That ship is enormous. I always mention that the Eiffel tower is 1082 feet tall, this ship is 1013 feet long. Essentially the same thing. It’s unbelievable. Great meeting you. You have some beautiful scenery out there in the desert. I have a few friends out that way.👍⛴️

Great video, viewing from Liverpool UK. Subbed
Thank you so much fun. I look forward to chatting with you in the future. Thank you for watching this ship video.
My favorite ship is the James R Barker because I used to work on her. Appearance wise, my favorites are Saginaw, John Munson, Great Republic and John Leitch. My favorite ships that been scrapped are Cleveland Cliffs Cliffs Victory, Patton, Girdler and White.
What was it like working on the JRB? As you can imagine, all of us would love to know some details. I hope you’re having a wonderful Labor Day.
@@vibewithmike We were on a steady run between Taconite Harbor and Burns Harbor. That could get a little dull. I was used to working on much smaller, older ships than the JRB. Everything seemed so much bigger when the ship is 1,000 feet long with a 105 foot beam when you are used to 600 feet long and a 60 foot beam. Crews quarters were nice and roomy and air conditioned. There was even an elevator! We couldn't open the windows, which I didn't like. I missed not being able to open the portholes. On one older boat I slept in an upper bunk, and I liked to open the porthole and fall asleep to the sound of the waves against the hull. When I went aboard, I knew some of the crew from previous boats, which was nice. There were often some high stakes poker games in the crews mess, but I stayed away from those. Otherwise it was a boat job, and you just adapted to the routine. Since we sailed to Lake Michigan, I saw the Mackinac bridge and Mackinac Island on a regular basis, and I enjoyed that.
@corporaldigbygeste7640 This story is so fascinating. Fascinating is an understatement word. It’s a dream of many people to do the work you have done. I respect you a lot for that work.
