I take a picture every morning of what I wear out to work or on the weekend. Then I rate them of how I felt on that day in my clothes. Was I pulling this up or tugging on that ? How confident did I feel? Etc , and put it in a doc on my phone .

@@athag1 it's helped tremendously! For starters I have a whole folder of outfits on my phone to choose from on a daily basis.
I also find I wear things more often (so say I have a shirt I'm iffy about, and it's hanging there , I test it with all my bottoms, and that way I figure out how I can wear it comfortably, maybe it's a tuck only thing, maybe it's something that only feels good loose on loose, it helps utilize the items I do have !)
This also helps me to let go of things too, if I've bought something because I've been influenced, I love it for the sake of branding or color or maybe it's got something lacy that attracts me, but it just doesn't work, the proof is in the photo. And sometimes I end up donating or selling a piece because of it!
You should give it a shot!

@@_inflection3209 Thanks for sharing. I’ve been taking photos of outfits I like, but they are kinda all over the place. I have to learn how to put them in a folder. Do you keep your folder organised in any way (you must have a lot of items in it) and refer to it or do you just remember the main things you’ve learned from your analysis?

I think this is the key to "effortless" style. If you have spent time carefully choosing items that you love, fit you well and reflect your style you might just throw them on in the morning in a tried and tested way. The effort and thought goes into buying and organising in order to make it seem "effortless" when it comes to getting dressed.

Also, take time to iron or steam everything that needs it in your closet. Can't tell you how many times I "haven't had something to wear" simply because I hadn't taken the time to iron my linen blouses or pants or whatever. Ridiculous but true 😆 Great video as always, Alyssa!

Ok. Here come some truly eccentric advice. I have a lot of clothes, and I like it that way. Most are bought second hand, so I do not feel too bad about it. I am also a terrible insomniac. Now I have come up with a variant of «counting sheep» that works great for me. In my mind I mentally pick out one of those miserable «step-daughter» garments that never gets taken out for a spin, and then I try to combine it with whatever I can think of from my closet. I style it with different shoes, accessories, outerwear...whatever. All in my mind, of course! And then I try it out in real life whenever I find time. It does not always work out as imagined, but I do surprisingly often find a solutions for my «step-daughter» garments. And I always fall asleep....eventually! So two birds with one stone!

Great video and great insight, thank you. Actually I have come to realize that people who are good at something, and that means anything, including dressing, are good at it because they take the time and make an effort. It is as simple as that. Most things in life are not only about talent but about DOING it, practicing, learning, trying something and then try some more. And that is great. Because it means that being a good dresser is achievable.

I loved these tips, I took time for the first time the other evening to style a pair of lilac trousers I bought last year and had never worn because I thought they were only for “smart”. But I went over to my son’s in them and shopping with my hubby and they both commented on how nice and summery I looked.I’m getting better at unusual less boring pairings and dressing things down a bit!

I really love the core focus of these tips: how to build contentment with what you already have. This is the focus of all videos on this channel, but for some reason it really came though for me today. It's really easy to become obsessive about all the little "rules" when watching fashion content. It's easy to worry "am I doing this right?" When I give myself TIME to reflect on what I have that I love, it makes it easier to say "no" to a purchase - even one that would fit well into a "curated closet" - because I can say "I already have _______, which I love. I will find ways to wear that item more."
When I see great fashion pieces (even on sustainable channels!) it's really easy for me to say "ooo, I want that, I'm going to look for that." Giving myself time to look at my closet, try on an outfit I love, or even write down 5 great outfits I already have curbs that impulse. It's been a journey, because this pandemic has lead me to seek out comfort, which lead to me into compulsive shopping practices, which lead me to have to address those practices. This channel helps me slow down and push back against the impulse!

I felt so much more put together when I took the time to plan my outfits. Playing dress up is something I never got to do in my childhood. I already have a huge wardrobe, so I’m trying to minimize shopping, which became became an expensive hobby (online shopping) during my 16-month+ isolation/lockdown. One thing I have been doing is rotating pieces “in” that I didn’t wear during that time. It satisfies that desire to have something new, because these items look fresh again, after their long rest in my closet. One thing I’m proud of: I didn’t buy any of that loungewear that brands were offering everywhere, I just wore my perfectly good extant leggings and knit tops, instead. I so wanted some of the matching sets! Compulsive shoppers like me have to start with baby steps, but I’m making progress, and you help a lot! Thanks🙂

This is so true. This another great videro. I already do this. So many of my colleagues thought I spent a lot of money on my clothing, but I spent time with my closet. I would plan my weekly school outfits and then finalize them the night before. I planned my outfit, my perfume, makeup, my accessories all the night before. I also tried everything on and can see if I need to mend or clean anything. I am not a morning person, so in the morning I just throw on what I planned and get so many compliments on my style at work.

Hi, Alyssa. Re wearing things you are on the fence about: last week I put on a blouse I had been thinking of getting rid of and had not worn for almost a year. I love the way it looks but for some reason the particular fabric it's made of ALWAYS makes me sweat, regardless of the ambient temperature. I told myself that maybe I was exaggerating, that it goes with so much of the rest of my wardrobe that I should really give it another chance - but no, 2 hours in I was dripping wet. After this reminder, it went into the "donate" pile. If I hadn't taken the time to re-wear it, it would have continued to clutter my closet indefinitely :(

I did this after reading a tip in a style book by Issac Mizrahi. He suggested taking a front, side, and back photo of each and every outfit combo you have. I did it for my work wardrobe and got my daughter to take the photos. I could see the colors that didn't work, a jacket in an unflattering length, necklines that looked bad, pants that didn't really fit. I also saw pieces that looked great! Then I could figure out what to keep, what to give to Goodwill, and as one of your other videos suggested...what to alter to make it worth keeping! Plus, you then know how to make better purchases to fill the holes from the stuff you let go. I wish I'd done it about a decade before.

She would wear the one in front and then the end of the day place it at the back of rack. She had a very analytical personality and this technique worked for her because she never had to think about what to wear. I always marveled at this because I would choose my clothing for the day depending on what I felt like that day. To me, her technique felt like a straight-jacket but it worked for her.

Yes I agree you have to spend time in your closet. I just did last night and I'm some things I was unsure of for my summer capsule. I think I will try that idea of wearing something I'm not comfortable in for a day to see if I really love it not love the item. Thank you Alyssa

Great tips! My favourites were, testing out an outfit you are unsure of, and those couple of minutes before heading out the door. I so agree about the "take off one accessory" rule, absolutes like that are not useful. I also loved your advice on looking at oneself critically and compassionately. That last one is so important!

Wonderful tips. I usually do outfit ideas a few times a year but this year I did it by season. I use an app to keep track of what I wear and it also helps with unnecessary repeat buying. I haven’t tried to video myself but I think I will give it a go to get the um 😐 backside view. The Italian definitely makes its presence there 🥴 I hopefully was able to get a spot for Saturday. I haven’t got the email instructions yet. Thank you 😊

I agree, planning outfits and organizing your closet does take a bit of time and thought. Every morning while waking up and drinking my coffee in bed is the usual time I brainstorm and decide what I feel like wearing, what to put together etc. thx for this reminder. Without time to think, nothing creative is ever accomplished

I’m also a tall curvy woman, and I’ve had very good success finding pants that fit from NYDJ (for jeans) and from Canadian sellers Joseph Ribkoff (great versatile pieces also perfect for travel) and from Melanie Lyne/Laura clothing who often have pants that are quite long (read the product specs for length).

When I buy something new, I always do a closet check with it and put together as many outfits as I can think of. If I can make at least 5 without much effort and another 5-10 with a bit more thinking, I’ll keep it. It also has to fit perfectly on it’s own. If it has to be combined with something specific to look good, it’s going back to the store. Pants need to work with different types of shoes etc etc

Totally agree on your perspective on the take off one accessory quote! As someone who can NEVER remember or be bothered to accessorize, the opposite holds true for me! On most days that last look in the mirror is when I will remember to at least put on a pair of earrings or a watch!

My daughter and I started sending outfit pictures to each other during lockdown because at least we were getting dressed and it replaced the check in texts.
I wear test outfits to the grocery store! The freezers make great full length mirrors lol.
Once a season I put together “just in case “ outfits for last minute dressing. I make casual, dressy and edgy/street outfits with two temperature options and take pictures. This has saved me lol. The occasions are much less now so when an opportunity presents itself, I want to be ready 😉

    Hey, Alyssa!
You are speaking my language and I totally agree with you. First of all, let me say that your hair looks gorgeous parted down the middle with that low ponytail. Secondly, I love how you encourage the idea of spending more time experimenting with the items in your wardrobe.
When I did that #parisianstyle10x10 with Jessica Harumi, I was in a huge style rut and it kind of blew me away to see how many outfits I could get out of just 10 things. It made me realize I have way too much and more than enough!
Thanks for sharing your tips and wisdom.
