DC plane crash: Helicopter may have missed crucial message before fatal crash

- “It wouldn't have mattered whether air traffic control had told them to turn left or turn right if they weren't receiving the message.”
Trump’s comments aren’t “very helpful” as we don’t know if the helicopter was able to hear air traffic control, says Ash Alexander-Cooper.

Okay, but even if the helicopter couldn’t hear air traffic control, helicopters have great visibility; how did they not see a plane with bright flashing lights right in front of them?
they flew right into it. its been less than 30 days since the events of new years day.
There are blind spots, even in helicopters. If they did finally see the other aircraft, it may have been too late to get out of the way.
People like yourself who have no idea what it’s like to operate an aircraft at night over a city of thousands of lights and spot the individual lights of an aircraft should best not speculate. You’re so far out of your depth it’s not funny.
@@ArthurTanner-d7sI keep thinking this when all these know it all's are commenting
It appears to fly directly at the airplane when more likely the helicopter was initially lower than the airplane, but the airplane was descending at a rapid rate, making it unlikely that neither aircraft saw each other. I'm not trying to sound like I know it all. Just pointing out the video gives a false picture of what was actually happening.
Someone needs to tell her she's on camera and probably shouldn't be smirking during this kind of report.
That’s exactly what I wanted to say.
You must be deplorables
@@mhuggins4679 Same here.
Absolutely horrified at her smiling face at totally the wrong time. She needs to go on a basic training course, did she forget she was being filmed. No excuse for it.
The helicopter was cleared to cross after the CRJ. It's possible they identified the wrong aircraft and then proceeded across the flight path of the inbound jet. Unfortunately this practice is common at this airfield and was an accident waiting to happen.
how do you know? Anyone with a pair of eyes can clearly see that that Chopper looks like it targeted that plane? It even looks like it chases after the plane?
@ ATC transcripts and ADS-B data
The plane which was in front of them on a level taxi orbit seems like the one they'd see
lol. You can tell that from a 2-dimensional video? At night? And low quality? Lol. Ok
And we all want flying cars?! Good luck with that...
Why this lady smiling at such an rtraguc accident.
Thought the exact same thing!! She obviously didn't realize she was still on screen. Looked disgusting.
They were playing a clip of the newly appointed Republican Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy. "Thoughts and Prayers" predictably, was his opener. I smirked, too, at his weak, maga response.
It’s a tragedy at night helicopters shouldn’t fly so close to an airport where airplanes take off and land every 40 seconds…Rest in Peace everyone…
It's always best to wait until the professional air accident investigators have done their work. Early speculation is often wrong and does no one any good. The accident has happened, tragically, and nothing can be done to make it not happen. The investigators will find out exactly how and why and make recommendations to ensure it never happens again...that's their job. They never look for blame. That's not their job.
Nothing can be done to make it not happen…..however by people raising important questions they can prevent it from happening! Additionally, when MH370 was first covered we had many people saying these same comments….however once they had completed the investigation they provided a dishonest biased analysis that left out facts, and when people tried to bring up the early questions they originally had, so much footage and media had been deleted and completely deleted from all media so there wasn’t any proof left for them to show to support their questions, so I disagree with you as I believe it’s crucial people raise questions early based on current footage and media or it could be deleted later and forgotten so authorities can develop fake explanations!
* Also I meant that they can prevent it from happening again
A wax cylinder recording from the early 1900's would have better sound quality than whatever device this guy is using.
If you watch the footage, that helicopter had plenty of time & opportunity to avoid that crash.
Exactly....!
Agreed! Especially from other angles, as it definitely flew straight at the jet!
huge drone??
It sure looks that way however its not like driving a car or something!!!
Being in a dark sky at night especially
Flying over such a brightly lit city plus all the other air traffic and sometimes people are at the wrong altitude like this report said.
Its a very odd situation and it looks horrifying but I'm certainly not about to scream this was intentionally done with no actual evidence of that.
Its not even been 15hrs since this happened.

Republicans offering thoughts and prayers is just laughable at this point.
It has become a symbol of the vapid and shallow phrases republicans like to use instead of actively working to amend underlying issues and causes.
She probably laughed at a joke or at a remark about herself or anything else about the broadcasting by some staff of the tv box (technician, redactor, etc.) or the tv management. This happens very often and may be difficult or impossible to avoid when the camera's recording eye is on you while it happens suddenly.
ATC DID tell the helicopter what to do. Told them to maintain visual separation AND to pass BEHIND the landing plane. 🤦🏻♂️
Media and “experts” have been garbage re this incident. The copter was told the plane was landing on 33, and asked TWICE if they had eyes on it - and they responded in the affirmative and were told to pass behind it.
Media / experts are misleading people by saying or presuming that the pilots didn’t know due to lack of comms, when they don’t understand that military coms are on a different frequency.
So none of those 3 crew members on the Blackhawk noticed they were barreling straight toward a large commercial plane?
Well, the Pilot didn't, dunno about the other 2
They aren't on a road. The plane isn't staionary in the sky. The aircraft are in the dark, it would difficult for the helicopter to judge direction and speed, and conclude that they are on a collision trajectory.
Ever flown an aircraft? At night? Over a city of thousands of lights and tried to pick out the lights of another aircraft?
I thought not.
@@BillDavies-ej6ye " The aircraft are in the dark, it would (be) difficult for the helicopter (pilot) to judge direction and speed, " . . In which case you have to know exactly what you are doing , not "assuming" it's ok . The helicopter pilot was on a training flight therefore it was the instructors responsibilty to be fully alert and one step ahead at every point . Sounds like this one had their feet up . . . Also the helicopter pilot knew they were crossing "a road" and a busy one . ATC had made them aware of the plane (which was precisely where it was supposed to be ) landing . The helicopter was above its correct altitude , putting itself on the "road". They shouldn't have needed to see it or judge anything , just be at their correct altitude , It was the instructors responsibilty to ensure it was .
@@BillDavies-ej6yeIt is actually much Easier too see planes and their direction at night. Airlines are lit up like a Christmas tree
Ironically, this reminds of PSA flight 182. A Boeing 727, also minutes away from landing, that collided with a Cessna over San Diego on September 25, 1978. In both instances, ATC had issued a "see and avoid" warning and both times, a third aircraft had been mistaken for the one that they collided with. Only difference, is that in 1978, TCAS hadn't been created yet but it was one of the incidents that set the stage for it's invention. "See and avoid" was inadequate and did not prevent a collision in day-light, so why did ATC think that it would be anymore adequate at night when a city like DC, is heavily lighted up and could cause confusion to the helicopter pilots.
She is just kind of laughing here? You owe the public a apology.
Why was training allowed at that time and place? Could have done training when the DCA airport was not as busy like in the very early morning… 2 am???
Work out the probablities and it will become evident that this is no accident.
To simulate real world conditions. Trainees eventually graduate and will be expected to fly under the same conditions, solo. You don't want that to be their first time.

Terribly designed process to allow helicopters manoeuvre around AC on short final.

It was pure lack of professionalism and she should consider her type of employment.
I had a bit of premonition on Monday as I drove by the exact location along the frozen Potomac River recalling the 1982 flight that crashed into the icy river. It was more than a passing thought as the Potomac is a few hundred meters wide here and doesn’t freeze over very often. I can tell you that the amount of helicopter traffic along the river, particularly the Maryland side, is quite considerable, as many of them fly over my house, about 18km upriver. The amount of airline traffic on a south wind approach from the north (as it was yesterday) can be as frequent as one flight about every minute to 90 seconds as the flight path of nearly every approach goes directly over my house at a fairly low altitude (until a recent collective lawsuit forced the FAA to vary their flight paths as they used to do prior to switching from radar to GPS about 10 years ago). It made for VERY noisy neighborhoods in Maryland, all day every day during the summer.
My God! The helicopter hit the airplane from behind like a missile target 😢😮

You don’t know anything about aircraft, do you?
On 9/11 two unarmed military pilots were ready to ram Flight 93 to prevent it from reaching DC. 93 never made it to the intercept point, having crashed in Pennsylvania. The fireball gives the vibe of what that intercept would have looked like.
Any pilot crossing an airport approach at low level shouldn't cross before 101% sure. Condolences, lost a partner in a crash. 🙏🏼
It’s simple . The helicopter pilot didn’t look outside carefully period
I have 700 night PIC in helicopter. This is no excuse for the helicopter crew.
Apparently visibility is actually poor at night with all the lights, but the elevation & path of the helicopter is currently being questioned.
Need to look no further than VAS Aviation UA-cam channel the amount of near misses over the skies and in or around the airports in the world today, it was only a matter of time before disaster strikes.
One day before the crash another airline didn’t ground there because that got a warning about an helicopter that almost hit 3 planes that day before then then next day this happened
ATC didn´t get an answer from pilot of helicopter...weird...
Fix the audio
TCAS, ADS-B, in controlled airspace and on final? What the heck? Someone dropped the ball big time! A VFR helicopter crossing over a final approach path of an active runway? Wow! Bizarre!
TCAS does not work at this altitude
At night its normal to fly on instruments, its why most small planes and helicopters pilots don't fly at night, as its hard. It would seem clear they spotted the wrong plane.

Come on then expert in incident analysis and investigation. It's an entirely sensible explanation of how things fail.
It is the ATCs responsibility to keep adequate distance between all aircraft. Seems like the ATC was laxing and shrugged off the responsibility to the chopper by telling it to keep visual separation.
Amen. The blame is completely on ATC.
@@namei8967Recent strain on the ATC and Trump gutting these departments doesn’t help the situation. Just makes it worse.
ATC isn't handling the stick. Like cars, boats, horses and motorcycles, the driver is ultimately responsible.
This isn't how it works. Helicopter is flying VFR. He has responsibility to see and avoid. Was asked if he saw the traffic and confirmed he saw it. Clearly he was looking at something else.
@@Tavat you blame trump for the collision not the bureaucrats working in home?!
Was the copter on a different comms channel? Was the comms channel blocked? Were the avionics hacked?
Speculation can cause misinformation. Let the investigators do a thorough job so we can get all the proper and correct information on this one. This is a tragic story.
Heard from a friend at FAA that they're in chaos because of Trump mismanagement. Already understaffed and overworked as a result.
In my opinion, the collision is waiting to happen.
the blame is completely on the air control and the controller. The controller didn't tell what height to avoid while the air control doesn't draw a height corridor to avoid.
Blancolirio has the audio from ATC... ATC told the copter to identify and go behind... the copter acknowledged and said it had a visual on the descending plane... the theory is the copter was looking at the wrong plane, a plane that was taking off... its possible the ground lights blinded the copter to the descending plane
So is this British woman wanting to be walked through an entire air traffic controller school training programming and helicopter school and safety administrator certification right now this second online and then bingo she's an expert? Get real, humble yourself focus on the priority which is the traffic loss of life, the heroism of the rescuers... For the love of God shut up. Not every single broadcast needs to be about"if it bleeds it leads", get some class, this is very tacky and in poor taste to be sure. Shame on you.
who the fck wants their radio programme to be about heroism of rescuers? thats such a quintessentially american thing: shallow pathos about heroism with no informational value. Noone needs to be told that rescuers are heroes, especially not on a news programme.
Very fishy here. It look like helicopter intended to do this. The way we look at video footage helicopter have time to prevent it happen???
When you look at probabilities it becomes clear that this was no accident.
Did she laugh at Shaun Duffy for putting out prayers 🙏😡
i sure did
Yes, so predictably maga
was the trainee flying the blackhawk helicopter under the supervision of a trained pilot? Who were the 3 people on board the helicopter ??? names ????
Major Cluster and Lt. Snafu
Helicopters should NEVER be "training" ANYTHING near an extremely busy airport - period!
Where do you clowns come from
according to generlly very well inform american channels, the helicopter should stay under 200 ft and the impact was at 350 ft, so the helicopter was to high, also it seems the helicopter was at a training flight. third, the TCAS dos not advise under 1000 ft, only warns.
Also planes on collision course are not moving in the windscreen and the city lights at that height would have made it very difficult to see the aircraft.
The holes in the swiss cheese definitely lined up tonight

Why are there all of these videos with people that dont know anything and sharing their opinions?
Comms would not be an issue if the copter had stayed under the 400ft altitude it was restricted to on that route.
In fact, having comms with everybody as some are insisting- would have caused institutionalized info overload.
I believe it was the miscommunication with the control tower obviously the control tower should tell the pilot directly what is going to happen. He could say directly to the chopper pilot look at your right you might be colliding with a commercial airplane. swerve to your left to avoid colliding with an airplane. The instructions should be precise and direct.
Are you either an air traffic controller or pilot?
great insight
Maybe something people would need to take into consideration that the Blackhawk most likely wouldn't have been fitted with TCAS - given that it's a military aircraft. It's a given that the CRJ700 was fitted with TCAS, but isn't it a system that needs two aircraft to be fitted with it for the system to activate?
The chopper should have had warning alarms and a lot of technology to warn it
Seemingly it does however as i understand it does not work below 1000ft
Exactly which alarms and technology? Please, be precise. Tell us the details.
@@Bl0ckHe1d Wrong.
TCAS does not provide avoidance directions under 1000'. Most military aircraft don't have TCAS. That said, one would think a military chopper should have had a radar.
The copter caused the accident.
Does anyone else hear the R2D2 scream as she’s laughing? Did she open a video on her phone…?
Fixed wing have right of way over rotor blade aircraft. Pilots must see and avoid. PIC is sole authority and responsible for the flight. The Helicopter should not have been in the flight path of the active runway. ATC should have sent the Helicopter away from the approaching. Both the helicopter PIC and ATC are at fault.

IMHO I believe it was 100% Army pilot error, probably combined w/ flailo ATC's up in the tower. No way a UH-60 on a training flight should have been in the glide path of an approaching commercial flight.
I just hope no first responders get killed trying to recover bodies, as the Potomac is notorious for its deadly currents.

It’s the woke DEI control tower’s fault!! Of course🤣🤣
UAP can manipulate perception. FAA will give no warnings about them as a danger
The pilot of the plane would have been following the published instructions for both track and altitude in what is called the "approach plate" in order to land the plane. It appears that the chopper was flying a "holding pattern" over the river. Holding patterns are used by controllers to keep an aircraft within a known area. Holding pattterns are flown in accordance within "way points" there is a high probability both pilots were focused on their navigation instruments to be certain they were operating in their assigned space . This could account for why they did not see each other.
Missed the message or ignored it?

@@d.optional3381 DEI is racist, toxic and useless. It has to go.
@bluecoffee8414 i didn't say it was DEI, I said it was likely. The controller knew that the two aircraft were on a collision course, and did nothing about it. They also knew the exact moment of collision. It is well known that there has been a major DEI push with air traffic control employees, and many have warned this would happen. I watched an India news outlet saying "how can this happen in the US when both flights are being closely monitored by controller"? The controller did not suggest invasive action, but asked "do you see the plane"? That's incompetence. It may not be DEI, that's why I said it probably is instead of saying it is.
