    very fun build... I love Colin Thompson images ...have done several..... the way you built this one, you almost did the puzzle twice... first on the poster then on the board.... my opinion I would display this one in place of your map.. Let people see this detailed image in person.... that is the only way to enjoy it , up close and having the time to reallllly look at it... on your wall we would just get a quick glimpse........ so fun really enjoyable...

      Oh I never thought of that - but yes, I basically did do the puzzle twice by piling the pieces up on the poster! I'm an overachiever! hehehehe I am planning on taking it down to the puzzle display this week - it needs to be seen! And I want to make a list of things for people to find in the image like the pencil sharpener.

      Thanks! I think it felt halfway because the start of a large puzzle - especially picking and placing - is really slow going, and then the pace picks up quite quickly near the end. But yeah, probably not exactly halfway.

    Hello, mdf is medium density fiberboard. It's cheaper than plywood and in some applications better and others (strength/ resistance to heat) not as good. I see it recently in wooden model ship kits that I build. One of my hobbies along with puzzling. I enjoy your videos very much.🎉

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  3 місяці тому +2

      Thank you - now I know what MDF means. It is very useful as puzzle boards - sturdy enough without being too heavy for me to move on my own. Model ships - fun!

    Love how this puzzle turned out. I had never heard of Colin Thompson till you and Vicki started this series, but almost immediately Bizarre Bookshop #2 (1000pc) came up on Marketplace, and I snagged it immediately...looking forward to tackling it later this summer. I can totally see why you love his images. I am 99% confident I will never try anything as big as this - I have limited space for puzzling and declining mobility so that getting up and moving around the table is more work than fun, but I am enjoying seeing videos of other people doing them! How long did it take you over all for this one, do you think?

    • @fortheloveofpuzzles
      @fortheloveofpuzzles  3 місяці тому +2

      Good on you to grab one of his puzzles - do let us know what you thought of it and if you enjoyed. I will admit that puzzling - big puzzles and speed puzzling - does take a toll on my body, especially my lower back. I really don't have an idea of how long it took me to do this puzzle. I think it was comparable to how long it took me to do Downtown by Clementoni - maybe even faster. That was 52hrs 30min - so I would say this one might be more around the 40-45hrs mark.

    Well done for completing this busy image.👍 Colin Thompson does like his detailed images doesn't he! I've done a few of his jigsaws but not many. I did enjoy the Flying Home one. Build as you sort or pick and place are similar methods. Some puzzlers like this, others prefer to sort. You and Vicky have completely different approaches to doing puzzles so interesting to see. Look forward to your next video.

    This was such a cool puzzle to watch you build. I am the same with these busy puzzles, pick up a piece and put where it belongs. Esp on the poster, but a box top will work too. You just can put as many pieces before they start sliding off!! I did his bizarre bookshelf (I've seen it both ways as well), but it was in a multi pack and only 100 pieces. I need to get it in a bigger piece size. Too many details!!! Aimee Stewart is similar, lots of details in one puzzle.
    Ok I'm off to watch Vicki's now!!!

    I purchased this puzzle secondhand as a 2000 piece Ravensburger, (still wait fir it to be delivered). Can't wait to start with it, I think I will also use the pick and place method. Well done one the 5000 pieces, and thank you for a great video.

    I have completed the 18k Ravensburger Magical Bookcase. It is a WONDERFUL image. However, do be warned that even in the individual bags, the piece cut does repeat. Especially difficult to see the miss placed pieces in the yellow borders. Each bag is about 4,550 pieces, and it is a 10 out of 10 in difficulty. I loved it, took about 125 hours over the course of 2 years to complete. (I was also raising 9 kids, and running a home.) Sorting was the worst, and your best friend is the foam puzzle boards to do smaller sections. I used painters tape to keep it together in smaller sections, and it is back in the box. I would LOVE to put it on a wall, but I don't have one large enough. (appx. 6x9 feet). Can't wait for you to do it too.

      9 KIDS!!! Sorry, I know you wrote a nice long comment but I got stuck on 9 kids! Good on you!!! Thank you for the warning and advice about Magical Bookcase. I wonder why they used a repeat cut pattern?? I will definitely need to be careful - and an extra reason why I will not mix the bags. I wish I had more wall space down at the display. I would love to eventually put up Visionaria and Magical Bookcase - maybe I should take down Travel Around Art at some point??

      I am so looking forward to doing the 18000 Magical Bookcase one. Thanks for the warning about the piece cut. I can't mix the bags either and from the looks of it I'd be certifiably insane by the end of it if I did. Space to do that is an issue for most people. I can comfortably fit 6000 piece puzzles on 4 masonite boards that overhang the dining table but that's it. I also use foam boards and also some A4 size thinly cut chipboard to do small sections while sitting on the sofa then transplant those to their proper place on the large boards. And uh.... NINE kids? I have none and I still don't find time for anything. Well done.

    Just finished Bizarre Town - love the puzzle. It's beautiful EXCEPT for the one glaring space near the middle where the piece is missing. I only sorted it on my bed or at the dining table. I carefully kept all the pieces in stacked plastic dishes to make sure I didn't lose them. I looked under the bed, moved the bedside cabinets and also the sofa and table and looked under the boards i was working on and nope - no piece. This is actually the second 5000 piece Ravensburger that was like that. My Disney Mickey and friends one was missing a piece also.

      @fortheloveofpuzzles  3 місяці тому +1

      NO!!! Oh no!! I'm so so sorry to read this - is there any chance you can make a replacement piece? I usually don't mind a missing piece on smaller sized puzzles but I would have also been gutted to miss one on this beauty. I can't believe this also happened to you with the My Disney Mickey puzzle - I'm so sorry!!

      @@fortheloveofpuzzles I looked on my Amazon orders and I had already sent the first copy of this one back because I (sensibly) did a piece count before starting with it - I did the count twice and got 5039 so not impressed I sent it back for a replacement, which they sent to me. This IS the replacement so I'm not doing it again. Just taking my money back this time and writing it off as a bad batch perhaps. Amazon are excellent - even after the 30 day window they will allow a return as they know it can take a while to do these. I didn't start it as soon as I bought it and only worked on it for a couple of hours at a time sorting and then building. LOL can't believe it has actually now been 3 of the 5000s like that. Don't know if it was the same piece in the one I sent back or not since I didn't build it believing it to be short one piece. Should have done that with this one too I guess. Shouldn't have to. I see in Vicky's comments someone else had a problem with a missing piece on this puzzle so their quality control probably isn't what it used to be. Sad because I would have kept this one to do again in the future.

    I also have the 18000 piece one - 4 bags of 4500 - I won't mix them either - I have about half of the Bizarre Town done now and really want to just dive in and open the 18000 and start to sort it. I've sort of used both your method and Vicky's. Sorted and built what I could and then did the rummage through the rest and pick up pieces and think 'I know where that goes' and put it in while I had it. I'm not one for landscapes either. I am really enjoying this image and to be honest I'd rather enjoy doing it that try to see how fast I can do it. I haven't found any damaged pieces in this one either. Looks beautiful completed. I'm looking forward to finishing mine.

      @@fortheloveofpuzzles Not done yet LOL but probably a bit over half way. I've started taking 4 baking trays and the remaining pieces and sitting on my bed in the mornings and putting the pieces I recognise in the trays corresponding to the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right of the poster. I find that sometimes I pick out 50 or 60 that I can find easily on the poster and then I can put them in when I get up. That leads to seeing other sitting in the box and placing those as well.

    I would definitely recommend a 6000 piece Bluebird puzzle :D
    In my experience Bluebird is super inconsistent with their piece quality, it's a hit or miss if you get a good 1000 piece puzzle or not. But the two 6ks I've done have both been very similar to Ravensburger quality. Highly recommended, I've loved both of them :)

      @@fortheloveofpuzzles You mentioned that Vicky had to deal with damaged pieces and that you didn't. I would say from my experience that you got lucky. This is the reason I won't by Ravensburger anymore. It is a common thing for them, and more and more people are talking about it. Not only in previous puzzles but the last one I did, the 9k Magical Dragon Forest, I had to repair over 300 pieces. While I enjoyed the puzzle it put me in a really foul mood toward the brand and support, both US and EU were nonexistent. Take a hike was the feeling I came away with. I can no longer buy this brand with confidence and consider it an inferior brand. I know that's not a popular or common view but its mine and its growing in the puzzle community.

      @@alanbrooksby4381 At the end of the day we can only go by our own experiences. I've had a 5000 piece that had 1 piece missing. I wasn't impressed and I definitely didn't lose it. They also don't do piece replacements anymore which was a good reason for purchasing with confidence. I have 5 of their 9000 and 2 of their 18000 so I hope they are all okay. I purchased a Trefl 13500 piece and when it arrived 6 of the 9 bags were burst open and the pieces where all loose in the box. I returned it and got a refund as I didn't trust that a replacement would be any better as I've read since that some of the Disney 9000 Trefl were like that too.
