Well done, Joe. I've read 5 or 6 novels by Waugh and I liked all of them. My favorite of the ones I read was "The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold." It's simply one of the funniest books ever written. I read it when I was your age and going to university. I remember I was standing in the hallway outside a classroom waiting to be let in, and I started laughing so hard at Waugh's book that people walking by were staring at me. I had to stop reading and finish it in my dorm room. Incidentally, in the early 1980s ITV (Channel 3) produced a wonderful miniseries of "Brideshead Revisited." It was really top notch. Anthony Andrews starred in it as Sebastian Flyte. He interpreted the role perfectly. I'm sure you can torrent the series. It is definitely worth it. (P.S. In America, PBS -- the closest thing we have to Channel 3 -- broadcast the miniseries. I remember watching it with my mom on consecutive Sunday nights.)

Those transportive moments are the best!

Oh most definitely it’s a quintessentially English novel. Your review captured the spirit of Waugh’s rapier wit targeted at the aristocracy.
Be sure to not miss the 1981 Brideshead series. Every member of the cast turned in an award winning performance (including Castle Howard). John Gielgud particularly is a joy to watch in a minor role as Charles Ryder’s father. With his tongue most firmly planted in his cheek, he delivered those lines with nary a smile nor twinkle in his eye.
“A Handful of Dust” is another Waugh novel where Waugh obviously delights in subjecting his characters to cruel irony.

But... the amount of butter on one’s toast IS more important than pointless things like academics and bank balances!

Great review! I have a friend who is a very big fan of Evelyn Waugh. Perhaps this video will finally nudge me towards reading Brideshead Revisited. 👍

At a shade over 300 pages you really must! I can’t guarantee you won’t give up, but I’m sure it’ll pluck at you in many different ways!

I cannot notice your pronounced masculinity from this standpoint and that is great, I cannot imagine you with the beard and I do not want to. Will not dive, but I do know there will be ton of fun content to watch.

I loathe this tale of soulless robotic aristocrats with half constructed scenes that blend into beige but very much enjoyed your video.

Ha! I love Brideshead, but this is a corker of a comment!
