Guitarist’s Wife Wrote This Song While FOLDING Laundry… Became a 70s Classic! | Professor of Rock

  • What a story. Coming up next we have principles John Hall and Lance Hoppen from the 70s band Orleans. These guys lit up radio for a couple of years with 3 big hits including 2 that are still played all the time. But then the group up and vanished… John Hall retired from being a rockstar and went into politics. Today’s classic 70s hit “Still the One” was actually written by a band member’s wife while she was doing the laundry. One story claims she wrote it on an envelope and one says it was a napkin but the band recorded it in about 15 minutes. It became a top 5 smash and conquered pop culture and was released on a record that had one of the strangest album covers of the time. The interview is next on Professor of Rock.

I was at a wedding once where the bandleader asked everyone to stand up. We did. Then he told all the single people to sit down. Then he said, if you've been married less then 5 years, you sit down. Then if you've been married less than 10 years, you sit down. This went on until the last couple was standing and they'd been married 43 years. Everyone applauded. Then the band leader said, "This next song is for you. Everyone else, you make sure you say 'Hello" to this couple before you leave because they know what they're doing!" Then the band played "Still the One." It was a happy time!

      Great story. Thanks for sharing.
Here's a better one. Destin from "Smarter every Day", told us one episode It's his anniversary, and proudly showed us a specific tin of ravioli. Took it to his wife who turned green, and exited the kitchen.
He explained; before his wedding, his dad said "Son, to have a marriage that will last forever, you WILL eat everything she prepares for you, and you WILL ask for seconds."
Wedding night, and she tasted the ravioli she was cooking, and puked the whole wedding night. It was off.
      Really off.
But he ate it, AND he asked for seconds. They're still married.

Been married 58 years this year! He is still the one! As you go through life you learn what true love means! For me I was hospitalized for a month with a life threatening surgery….my husband would sit by my side from morning until evening…..I knew that love is more than words….it is action. Never felt more loved. Years later he suffered a stroke, and as he recovered I had a chance to show him my love. We married young…I was 18, and he was 19. Yes I loved him, but found out just what that word really means! Thanks for allowing me to share my love story! Still going strong!

The night my husband and I met, we went to the jukebox to make a selection and he asked me, "do you like Orleans?" I sure did! So the first song we heard together was "Still the One". He told me that night he would marry me and we tied the knot exactly a year and a day later. Just celebrated 46 years together and LOVE that it's 'our' song! ❤

Graduated HS in 1975. A guy in my class and his freshman gf found out she was pregnant. To everyone's shock her parents signed for her to marry. They moved to the town where he had a college scholarship and they had their child that year. She finished HS there about the time he graduated college. He enrolled in law school and she began study to be a teacher. Fast fwd...next yr will be our class reunion...our 50th and the same anniversary for them. For every past reunion they are awarded longest married. Our drama teacher always attends to give the award and says, To all you doubters and naysayers they're still going strong.
After law school and her teaching degree they had 2 more kids.
It worked for them bc their love and commitment were strong and their parents rallied for them. Ppl are shocked when I tell this story. Our small town isn't. We r actually proud

There is plenty of classic 70s gold. Songs "as done" were better in the 80s, with heavy bass and not too many"middy" crowding each other out. But songs "as written" were better in the 70s. Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally" is fantastic. No one (who is on the charts) writes like that these days.

I had heard Still the One for most of my childhood on oldies radio, but not long after my parents were remarried after a bit of a separation, it gained a whole new meaning for me. My Mom was always the one for my Dad. He has never loved anyone else, but I always think of how my Dad is STILL the one for my Mom. The line, "and sometimes I never want to see you again, but I want you to know, after all these years, you're still the one I want whispering in my ear" reminds me that sometimes love can truly be meant to be. Because there was no divorce, my parents are still the one for each other and it's been nearly 42 years. Thank you, Prof and thanks to Orleans for this memory

My first thought when I hear this song is of the unique, melodious, now-lost voice of Larry Hoppen. I was a HUGE Orleans fan and was in love with his singing. When they first appeared on the radio, my buddy and I would try to figure out who was "high guy" and who was "low guy." Of course, Larry was high guy, John sang the lower harmonies. The keyboard hitting on the up-beat, the dual lead guitars-(an Orleans signature), the drums that are just locked in the pocket, the toms at the end of the bridge... What a band.

Agreed splitting genres can be great, and it is Classic Rock leaning toward yacht rock. I don't see it as yacht rock but it is a great song on a yacht rock mix to speed things up. It has that 70s accoustic, feel good vibe. Yacht rock has a bit more of a 80s ish thing going on to me. Yacht rock is drinking your wine or beer on a sail boat, this is a 70s car floating down the highway on a road trip at a comfortable but moving down the road speed.
Well written song, which was true to their sound At the same time, I could see other 70s Bands recording it. Kind of Bread or America meets Crosby Stills Nash with the harmony they have, again a great mix. However, you see it. Great work and thankful they had the success on the radio and we get to enjoy it.

I personally think maybe your passion for music comes from a wonderful place. Like most musicians who make it in this industry, your view of the world relative to your experience with family, life and love is nothing short of the magic that is made by those you admire. You have access to knowledge that is far beyond your years and peers (and possibly most people even in the industry). This comes from the same place as you, the Heart. I wish you all the best. I am a nobody musician who tried, but failed to make it. Have you ever tried to be a musician ? Because you have the same drive, passion and intellect that it takes to make your own mark in this industry ! (Obviously!). I have nothing to gain personally from this comment . I genuinely wish you all the best life has to offer. Your Dad would be proud !!!
