@@maggielebeau4592 Yep I agree but it still hard to put all your power into your swing. When I try to put all my power into my swing I end up missing the ball.
Right now i can get massive power if i put my hips, arms, and weight into it but it gets outta control So i just use hips and some arm action for 230 off the batting tee working on controlling the full beast
2 month update: Enourmous amoutn of improvement! Swing is just getting into a v on contact but as soon as i correct that my swing will look like the peoples you just watched!
Pedroia's swing is fascinating. He holds his head straight up, which would normally make it harder to accurately track and target the ball. He also drops his hands below his shoulders and assumes the hammering position with the back hand very, very early as well. It is difficult to replicate what he does, but that swing in this clip is a thing of beauty for how long the bat remains in the path of the ball. It's quite remarkable.
Thanks for posting this, OP. I wanted my youngest daughter to see some good slo-mo swings without commentary, just so she could take in the motion as a whole, and this is perfect.
I just want to say, nowadays, pros in the mlb only try to swing up. The only thing scouts recruit for are hitters that can hit the ball hard and hit home runs. For example, in the video look at both Jose Bautista and Bryce Harper’s swings. Both of them have a big dip in their swings. When you swing up, you only have a chance to hit the ball on the tip of the bat. It’s easier to understand if I showed you in real life with a bat and a ball. But then, look at both Robinson Cano’s swing. I know you can’t really tell from that angle, but his swing is level, and it doesn’t dip down at all. If you swing level or EVEN swing down, you have a better chance of hitting the ball. If you swing level, the ball could hit the bat on any place on the bat. Again, it’s hard to understand to explain this on a comment of a UA-cam video, but I tried to make it as clear as I can to you. So this is why people should stop swinging up and dipping in their swings, and swing level or even down. You could even try it by just going to a park with a parent and ask them to pitch to you and just try swinging level or down. Have a good day
Getting the bat “on plane.” Sound advice, I agree 1000%. Your margin for error becomes greater the longer your bat is on the same plane as the baseball coming in
Thanks for this! I am a high school freshman and I'm trying to figure out my swing before tryouts. I've always tried to get under the ball, but i will for sure keep this in mind. You said you could explain better in person.... Any chance you could do a UA-cam demo?
Not trying to criticize you but I can see we’re your coming from. When I was growing up I always would try to either dip or keep it even. Now I’ve learned to go at the angle the ball is pitched at especially fastball. You might not want to do this against and off speed pitch especially when the pitcher has a lot of drop on the ball.
thanks for the excellent slow-mo clips. what i see is that most great hitters are able to keep their EYES very still (quie eyes period) as they enter the final hitting zone period.
Better get on the tee and start swinging then! Ive been swinging off the tee and trying to get better mechanics for 6 months everyday now and its working. Im trying to make highschool varsity for my third year so ya know.... Gotta bust my ass.
Almost all mlb hitters let their back foot come up on the tip to shift their weight to their stiff front leg and rotate around it.No squishing the bug. Then they settle down on the ball of the foot for a split second,AFTER contact. The back arm slots to the side supporting the hands and the top elbow works up to keep the bat in the zone. All you got to do is look at the slow mo,there is no throwing the hands or staying 'level"with the shoulders. They do not swing down at a ball that's going down either.
You are absolutely right, I just had this argument with my son's high school coach. It's pretty hard to argue the video but he keeps saying he has 19 yrs experience. Good thing his hitting coach teaches rotational hitting and not swinging down on the ball.
Never swing down or level. Swing at the angle between the strike zone and the pitchers head. Homerun dirby swings are different from game situation swings also. Getting way out in front on a gimmy pitch will fly a long way, but you won't get any of those in a game. The transfer of the actual weight gets carried through to the front as the bat gets through the front. It is weird to explain when you see a back foot with no weight on it, but the body weight is still behind the front knee and moving forward towards impact. If all your weight is out front before the bat gets there you are an easy strikeout, unless you are playing slow pitch softball.
Greatest all time: Ken Griffey Jr. Best Current: Robinson Cano Most badass swing all time: Juan Uribe. Currently: Harper/ Bautista Raw power of all time: Bonds (even without roids) Current raw power: Giancarlo Stanton
Several of the swings are not in game situations, they are transferring the weight too soon to the front foot because they are just swinging for homeruns. The game situation swings for most players keeps the weight behind the front knee until the swing makes contact even though it looks like all the weight is on the front foot. The swing carries the momentum and weight beyond the front knee as the swing gets beyond the front knee. The "homerun" swings get you way out in front of breaking and off speed pitches, you won't be able to hold up. It works if you can guess right, and sometimes guessing is the thing to do according to Ted Williams.
HR derby swings are not the best examples because they lunge towards the pitcher more than they do in a game, and they swing harder than they do normally. They do show how to keep hands inside the ball and follow through with extension. That Gonzalez swing is a thing of beauty.
Hanley swing is my favorite all time... Watch how he can stride that far and still drive his front knee through the ground to get crazy bat speed...1:24
The only real problem I see in the video (and it may just be the angle we're seeing it) is that it looks like his weight is moving backwards at contact and just after. Take a look at his back foot--he's up on the toe (meaning he's moved his weight forward), and at the end of the swing, he's back to the ball of his foot.
For all of you asking about Griffey J, his swing, from a fundamental standpoint is not that great. He has a massive uppercut. But it is a sight to behold because he tunes it so well and adjusts to anything and that is why he was so sucessful.
JJ GRAVITY a batter who hits without getting his weight to his front foot at impact will always be late and pop everything up. He will have the feeling that fastballs are jumping on him and his bat will feel like it weighs 10 pounds. The mechanics of hitting a baseball, tennis ball or golf ball or throwing a ball or a punch are all the same. You must transfer weight from the back foot to the front foot and then turn your hips.
King exactly I totally agree that the back foot off the ground is a sign of a guy who really uses his hips but ur not gonna hit the ball 100 feet farther by thinking about taking your foot off the ground.
When I plant my front foot and load into the ball, I turn my back foot but everyone in this video lifts there's up, I guess i'll lift mine from now on.
That's not totally right, but you see the issue. Elite hitters (Pujols, Williams, Kemp) lower the rear elbow through a blended move of adduction, ER (ext. rotation), and supination. Harper lowers it only through ER, which causes him to lose the stretch (which leads to the true power source). As a result, he loses the contribution of his rear leg/hip and is forced to push the hands with his arms.
Was it just me, or did most of the video focus on Harper? All the others are filmed from a TV, but Harper's was a home video, with batting practice also? I like Harper a lot, but it just seemed odd putting him in the same category as these great veterans while a sophomore in the MLB.
Here’s another thing to thing about if you still haven’t had your “aha” moment about Teacherman and Antonelli being right. How many of the best hitters through the years “wrapped their bat” before they swung? Most of them. Try making the “hands to ball” traditional bad hitting move with even a slightly wrapped bat. You’ll hit yourself in the back of the head. Yet, these guys begin their swing there. They don’t hit themselves in the head because their bat path is not straight to the ball. They go back and down before coming up through the ball. Just think about it.
actually, you don't really have to crush the ball to get into the Major Leagues. what you need is consistency. Recruiters want to see if you can repeat a good swing. you can work on your power later
Totally agree... case in point is Carlo Stanton wins the HRD @ Petco using that flat plane swing with a 65 mph batting practice pitch. But that flat swing fails him game after game. Last season... 27 HR (yawn), but 140 SO!!!! MLB pitchers have figured out he can't hit a pitch with movement or an outside strike. He bars his lead arm too early and has no tilt to get on pitch plane, then swings over the top... like a little leaguer! Who the *$%k is his batting coach??? Oh, that's right... Mr Home Run... The Bonds-0-nator!! Either Bonds can't speak Spanish or Stanton is being stupidly stubborn. Carlo, WAKE UP! Keep your lead arm bent and put some tilt in that stiff spin or yours and you could break Barry's record!
The only problem with this video is everyone of the players are trying to hit a home run. There is a big chance they will miss. You just happen to have played the ones they hit. Homerun hitting contests are exactly what they are named. Its the ones that are trying to hit line drives that are the best swings.
The hands and back elbow get way too high during a lot of his loads, and that really messes him up with pitchers that are lower and/or on the inside part of the plate. That second swing where he pops up epitomizes the issue. He's succeeding right down despite this flaw due to his raw talent.
No, I'm focusing on targeting as well. His ER forces him to make a decision sooner. He can't wait as long. His swing plane sucks because he has to use his arms.
It's crazy how many of 'em have no weight on their back leg. Cano's was off the ground when he made contact. It explains his power numbers in those big AL West parks this year. I think Yankee Stadium inflated those power numbers.
if you trying to study a swing you cant use homerun derby swings becuase they change it up to hit flyballs. its not the same as in a game. if your studying hip rotation and lower body then you can use it. but if your trying to study upper body then hr derby swings are not it.
I never realized that they actually swing their entire body into the swing. Gives me a whole new perspective on how they get their power
Using your legs and hips is really the key to power
Rotational hitting is body bringing hands ,,it is where 500 foot home runs come from
@@maggielebeau4592 Yep I agree but it still hard to put all your power into your swing. When I try to put all my power into my swing I end up missing the ball.

Matt R. Garrett this is a derby this is not their game swings
It’s the home run derby
Ken Griffey Jr was so enjoyable to watch.
Man, look how still Cano's head stays while his entire body twists. That's called keeping your eye on the ball.

Your missing the best swing in history. KEN GRIFFY JR. All swings fail in comparison.

SO TRUE!! He was one of a kind
Ted Williams
Robbie Cano has the best, most effortless swing in history
Right now I think Carlos Gonzalez has one of the cleanest swings. Not effortless, but awesome to see.

Yeah
i seen ur comment and went straight to his swing, it almost looks fake how still his head is

Mike Piazza's Swing was awesome.

Robinson Cano has the best swing of all time.
It's amazing how smooth his swing is

Josh Ken Griffey jr pulled the ball like most lefties, Robinson canó somehow manages to hit the ball like a righty, it's smooth
Love them or hate them Barry Bonds and A-Rod had some of the best looking swings ever
I love Fielder, Bonds and Josh Donaldson's swing but Arod's swing is definitely good looking

you missed the cespedes throw to the plate when the A's were playing the Angels in Oakland
When I plant my front foot and load into the ball, I turn my back foot but everyone in this video lifts there's up, I guess i'll lift mine from now on.

Barry Bonds & Ken Griffey Jr & Tony Gwynn & Mike Trout & Derek Jeter & Alex Bregman & Carlos Correa & Jose Altuve YOU MISSED A LOT OF POWER HITTERS.
