Marvin was never the same after Tami died, he already had demons w his dad, being molested by his uncle and Tami's death just was the thing that threw him over the edge
Marvin was paired with quite a few ladies for songs while on Motown -- Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross -- but it was with Tammi that his duets had the most success. Looking at them together, you can see why. They had an amazing chemistry that went beyond the beauty of their voices.
Tammi Terrell was his Favorite Singing Partner. They had so many duets together, This One, Your Precious Love, If This World Were Mine (Covered By Luther Vandross (RIP) and Cheryl Lynn. Tammi Terrell (Born Thomasina Ford), was from Philadelphia, PA and was a backing vocalist for James Brown. Their Songs were written by The Late Nikolas Ashford (Music), and Valerie Simpson (Words) who came to Motown in 1967 along with Norman Whitfield after the acrimonious split of Holland/Dozier/Holland. When she died in 1970 of a Brain Hemorrhage she died in his Arms that traumatized him. He vowed he'd never do another duet with another Woman but Berry Gordy (His Brother In Law at The Time) convinced him to do one with Diana Ross.
As someone else said, this song is iconic, it is one of the greatest Motown songs & songs of the 60s. It has been used in movies, on TV, you just can't help but loving this. This is the best version.
I am laughing! A rock under a rock? That was funny. Best version of this song for reasons I do not need to explain. RIP to them both! Such a great music video.
Not only is this song ICONIC but it's ICONIC twice.....this is the 1967 original smash but Diana Ross kicked off her 1970 solo career making this a # 1 smash completely rearranged....like both versions but prefer this Marvin & Tammi version....btw....written by a young and up and coming young superstar duo Ashford & Simpson.....great reaction
The video is from the Monday through Friday after school music program "Where the Action Is." Produced by Dick Clark when "American Bandstand" switched to Saturdays. I used to race home from the bus stop so I wouldn't miss the beginning of the show.
Mother Pop, great request to a classic song. I watched Tammi's touching Unsung documentary regarding her medical struggles and early demise. It was stated that Marvin and Tammi has such a musical chemistry she was touted as Motown royalty. Although I was taken by Tammi's beauty, Tammi's tragic life and her hope to return to singing made Tammi's story even more remarkable....again, great request to a classic song.
The Tami Terrell story is as heartbreaking as it is disturbing. When she was 16 she sang back up for and dated James Brown who was in his 30s. James mistreated her and beat her badly. The last time he beat her was so bad that one of her fellow musicians had to call her mom to come get her. Her sister recounts how she was bleeding all over the place and had dried blood stains on her expensive clothes when she got home. After James Brown she hooked up with the singer from the temptations, David Ruffin, who once beat her in the head with a hammer and motorcycle helmet. She died of a brain tumor a few years later. Before her death, she gave an interview where she said she’s had brain issues prior to getting involved with Ruffin but believed the beatings contributed to her then current problems. She was only 24 when she died. Marvin Gaye was so distraught by her death that he took time off from the industry and started a downward spiral into drug abuse. He thought about retiring and had to be talked into returning. He returned to the studio a few times and created his most successful works, but his continued drug abuse would later catch up to him. He was shot by his father after intervening in a fight between his mom and dad. At the time of the fight, Marvin was suffering severe effects of his drug abuse. He had become increasingly paranoid. He was convinced he was being followed. He barely left his house and had security cameras installed all over the property (this was fairly unusual in the 70’s/80’s). Much like Donny Hathaway a few years earlier, Marvin was suffering from paranoid delusions brought on by his intense drug habit. Many people were upset and outraged when his dad only received a 6 year suspended sentence for his killing. But given Marvin’s delusional state of mind at the time, his dad likely had a very good reason to fear for his life. Just weeks prior to his death, Marvin had been receiving visits from his studio friends who were trying to convince him to get cleaned up and return to the studio. Prior attempts had been unsuccessful, but they finally got him to say yes. Had help gotten to him sooner, it might’ve changed the course of history. The lyrics to the song “missing you” by Diana Ross was written specifically for Marvin Gaye (even though the video also featured Florence Ballard and others). It was an image conscious time and Diana’s management were concerned about how Marvin’s drug use would reflect on Diana so they added Florence Ballard from the supremes (who died in 1976) and a montage of others who passed to the video. Diana and Marvin once dated and were extremely close friends. The lyrics “I tried to be there but you wouldn’t let me in” spoke to the increasing isolation Marvin was being drawn into. The entire song is an insight into the chameleonic change in Marvin once addiction took ahold of him.
* Donny Hathaway was paranoid because he suffered from mental illness. Besides medications he was prescribed, there is no record of Mr. Hathaway ever abusing any type of drugs. I don't even know why he is mentioned here. Mr. Hathaway's situation was totally different.
@@LadybugLuv I respect your opinion on this subject. As you can tell, I do a lot of research and reading of biographies and first hand accounts from people who witnessed and lived through that era. I wouldn’t level an allegation if I didn’t have reason to believe it. It’s possible that Donny suffered from a preexisting genetic predisposition toward schizophrenia, but I personally have not seen or read anything to suggest he had a family history of mental illness. What we now know about the illness that we didn’t in 1979 is that illicit drugs can increase the severity of symptoms in people who have a predisposition toward the disease…and mimic the symptoms for those who don’t. Based on the severity and rapid progression of Donny’s delusions (as told by people who were with him that day), it strongly suggests that drugs were involved. Additionally, there is confirmed reports that the CIA pumped drugs into the black community-particularly ghettos like where Donny grew up. The Sam Cooke documentary talked about how black musicians were paid in cocaine by white label executives. That’s why many hitmakers of the day were broke despite their success. Sam pioneered the black owned record label to change that. Berry Gordy perfected it. The point being that drug addiction and drug use was more common among black artists than people realize. Based on what I know about the disease as well as other factors, I believe Donny Hathaway’s mysterious death was caused by drug abuse likely in succession with a preexisting mental illness. Interestingly, the Jazz musician Chet Baker died the same way Donny Hathaway did by falling out of a hotel window after having paranoid delusions. He was found to have heroin and cocaine in his room and in his system. I have been trying for the longest to find Donny Hathaway’s toxicology. No luck so far. I know mainstream reporting has been adamant that Donny didn’t do drugs. But you have to understand that in those days things get covered up if management could help it. The police were not the first ones in Donny’s hotel room after the incident. Put it this way, if Whitney died in 1979, her likely cause of death would be that she slipped in the bathtub and hit head. Prince would be that he fell down an elevator shaft.
@@seanboulderformerlymel3000 Assumptions and speculations. Articulated very well, but still bs. Should'ves, would'ves, could'ves doesn't make it so. Cite your references in print or it's nothing but highbrow gossip.
Diana Ross and The Supremes did a cover. Marvin Gaye record his part before going on tour and another female singer was to record the other track but couldn't get away so Barry Gordy had Tammy Tyrell sing it. Gaye wasn't happy until he heard the full record. They paired together until she became sick with brain cancer
Tammi death inspired the What’s Going On album along with the letters his brother was sending him during his serving in the Vietnam War and the injustice/ civil right movement black people were dealing with during da 60’s
Marvin & Tammi were both nice looking with voices that blended well and complimented each other. They're a perfect pairing. Her death seemed to be Marvin's undoing, as he always somehow blamed himself for it. He felt that he should have done more to protect her.
Boy did their voices and harmonizing sound great, such a class act. Another song they did together that for me earned a 10 was AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING. RIP Tammi and Marvin going way too soon. If you wanna hear a great soul song with great lyrics and soul listen to THE LOVE WE HAD STAYS ON MY MIND by the Dells, you can't go wrong.
Tammi and Marvin were great together and had great chemistry. While performing on stage with Marvin at Hampden Sydney College she collapsed in in his arms. She was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had a beautiful spirit and her death really got to Marvin.
As far as versions, there are only two in my opinion worth listening to, this one the gold standard and Diana Ross the silver, both were great arrangements, but this version by Marvin and Tammi is untouchable. They had such great chemistry together too. They had a string of great songs together and another that can’t be missed by them was “ If this World Were Mine.” Just beautiful!
Just had to say this.....Taraji P Henson looks so much like Tammi....almost like a twin......but even tho she looks like her she couldnt play her in films cause Tammi died at age 24 and Taraji is 50 yrs old
This was the first of a series of popular releases by the ultimate musical duo, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (pronounced "ter-rell"), written by that other popular duo, Ashford & Simpson, which can be heard live at: ua-cam.com/video/h_6kLkL8S5o/v-deo.html. Tammi & Marvin-the best duet ever,MOTOWN 4 ever!!
Classic song. This was used in the Chrysler "we are Motown' commercial with Barry Gordy in it.
I love this song. Always makes me cry for some reason.
So sad this beautiful girl had only 3 years to live
This performance was filmed at Expo 67 in Montreal . The clip is from the DVD - Marvin Gaye in Performance 1964 - 1981 .
I believe it was originally on the Dick Clark produced show "Where the Action Is."
