      MG The Future It would be great to hear your thoughts on the return of Scott Storch. Is this the revival of R&B music or just a return of the Mack? Is struggle R&B here (or on its) and is struggle rap on its way out the door? Where are we headed man? I know you see the future!!

    I came across this concept dealing with a live band years ago, but never took the time to apply it to electronic production. It makes total sense that doing so makes everything gel together. This is probably why Dre's music sounds simple, yet complex. The devil is in the details. Dope beat and vid! You make using pads and keys look archaic by the way. lol Thx for the info!

    This is gold once you figure how to do it efficiently...in marching bands they tune all the drums(including bass) to certain notes to blend better with the band. #OneBandOneSound

    So actually I found another way to tune the drums, tunning to each chord in the track is to much, we have to remember the fundenmentals of bass/drum. The drums are constant within a key, but the bass is what articulates tonal changes.
    What I opt to is bring the drums within the key of the song. I had a song in Am, my kicks & snares were around G#0, I used melodine to bring them up to A and the drums sat perfectly in relation to the rest of the music. That makes a huge difference.

    This is dope. I used to do this another way, but the steps are reversed. Do the 808/Bass line first, copy those midi notes and paste them on your drum track. Then drag the notes far to the left so they are short like one shots. If your kick is tuned right it will match with the bass line

    I just recently found out that producers are tuning more than just kick drums alone and it is still blowing my mind:)
    How does one begin to tune drums and percussion across the other DAWs in a transDAW world lol?
    I use Logic perhaps the most even though Reason and FL Studio are used as well.
    If a DAW does not provide any means for tuning, would you tune them within a DAW or plugin that does and then export/import into your preferred DAW?
    Another great, mind opening video!

    Glad i found your channel. Apreciate this. I use melaproductions free tuner. It picks up most kicks tune, but sometimes it wont pick up anything or the kick wont tune to the certain key Im in. I always thought they tuned it to the key of. They didnt follow the melody. Like the key they begin with or most played. I been trying to tune all my drums. It does make a difference when my tuner picks it up correctly. Again thanks!

      Chill Wave 🌊

    • @BlackAera
      @BlackAera 6 років тому +1

      I thought chill wave was different, less trappy. Would you say this is a typical chill wave beat?

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 років тому

      Good point. The atmosphere is what makes it Chill. The Tempo Makes it the Wave. Trap Drums or just drum textures usually carry the genre though.
      So if we take Reggaeton, and the drums you expect there, no matter what - you know thats reggaeton. Even with Nexus or Serum on top of it.
      When Drake, Majid Jordan, Partynextdoor - etc Borrow the "chill" genres, its simply being blended with contemporary American drums (which is trap at the moment). So its ALWAYS trap with these drums first. However, the style is borrowed from "chill wave" or Lofi Chill, or Vaporwave, or Retrowave.
      We are borrowing the aesthetics for everything, but the drums. As the drums are appropriate for the main user -> Rappers

    I'm a new subscriber, and I must say I'm loving the content and knowledge that you put out. Also, on the topic of tuning drums, have you tried Studio One's stock tuner under the effects tab? I use it on 808s and it works wonders. Haven't applied ot to kicks and snares yet tho. Anyways, keep up the good work bro.

  • @kpcurt
    @kpcurt 6 років тому +1

    Dope tut. This is both a very good mixing tip and a good creative tip. I think some electronic snare samples don't really have a prominent key, like it's actually Mad noise.
    I'll probably learn my Key -> Frequency match ups and eye/earball it as I don't have any of those tools, and it'll just be good to start learning what keys are what freqs.

    As, I've seen that sometimes, Melodyne doesn't give correct pitches for some drum samples, I tend to default to using Voxengo Span (freq peaks) for drum sample pitches.

  • @tonyogar6936

    Thanks MG. Top notch as always.
    I was watching the Waves masterclass that Focus did recently, and he did mention that the only other thing he would want from Torque, is to be able to automate the filter. For a moment I wondered why. And after watching your tuning vid, it starts to make more sense. Mayby I'm overthinking it, but if one tunes their drums, it could only be an added benefit to be able to tune those processes that work on frequency - hence automating the filter in torque.
    This could be me just reaching though... lol.

    I would just tune the kick to the root note. Tuning the kick to every chord gives the kick too much bounce IMO.

  • @embersandash
    @embersandash 6 років тому

    Yeah! I think Prince pioneered the technique with the LM-1on “1999” in 1982. Tuning the kick was why he didn’t have any bass guitar or bass synth on “When the doves cry.”
    Got my info from here:
    mixedbymarcmozart.com/2014/10/02/mixing-kicks-real-kick-drums-808-909-subkicks-mix/
    I’ve been doing this a lot lately with synth drums, mainly 909ish (from Softube Heartbeat) using Ableton’s tuner but I think I might be ready to start using Sonic Academy’s Kick 2.

    Hey mg it's been a min but I'm still here.... Any I got an idea would you do a tutorial on how to put melodies over samples but find the tuneing in samples that say like E min or maj but the tuneing like say the sample maybe in Emin or Maj but the tune could be in 440hz or say 425hz could you do a tutorial on how we could find the tune of the sample in that format?

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 років тому +1

      If it’s detuned, most keys detectors will just show it sharp or flat...melodyne will show it slightly off the key. I’m not aware of any tools that show tuning outside of 440 format as a number tho.

    What does the "sound match" feature in Omnisphere do exactly? Tried to look it up online and even on the Omnisphere site, it's vague & not very descriptive about what it does...

    • @MGTheFuture

      Not to be funny or anything - but it finds matches of similar sounds. Sound Match.

    • @kahlilsmith5243

      Similar sounds external to the plugin? ("from outside" of the plugin?) Or does the sound it's matching have to be an Omnisphere patch?

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 років тому +5

      It’s sound matching within Omnisphere, because Omnisphere has 10,000+ presets - and no one got time for that. So you find your favorites, and then use sound match to switch it up sometimes

    • @MGTheFuture
      @MGTheFuture  6 років тому +1

      To some extent. The convenience of the computers doing more for you, gives you time to make more of it. And of course, outlets like Spotify are buying AI esque systems to analyze songs and music to generate hits for their own artists soon...it would behoove us to not level the playing field.

What do you think when the pirates hate the piracy? On a broader note, how do we keep everyone in check, but not be hypocritical? We all do stuff wrong, but how do we use checks and balances to make sure things don't get out of control? Anyways sry for the long comment, just saw the title of AM's video and had a heart attack XD. Back to watching. It's not just him, a lot of producers (even Kanye) pirate, but get mad when others do. Stay woke.

      I honestly haven't paid any other youtuber any mind. I always see their "suspect alias" pop up on MM and my channel - so I block them.
      I have no context to comment on the issue though.
      In general, I've been "making good" on my debt, by buying nearly everything I would have pirated as a teen. Doing that seems to help those developers make new tools faster - which is what im about.
      Also, seems to help me open doors that would normally be closed.
      When people copy me - theres levels. Theres the level where "thats the point" when I see someone creating and posting dope stuff on IG or something. Then theres the "thief" - which many have reported to me, simply take my tutorials and ruin it on their own channel.
      At the end of the day, can't really protect yourself from that sort of behavior, as its psychological. On a business end - theres a few things you can do. In fact, once my youtube subscribers hit a certain threshold - I get new tools to actually address this more directly. So until then, im just doing what I do best.
