The big question is how to get into a position to have this winning volley - key is here: ua-cam.com/video/zKn_Kp9MBvg/v-deo.html

Hey Sandy, in this video you emphasize how important it is to start with the racket really high. In your How @ When to slice video you' re talking about starting the swing just slightly higher than the height of the ball. This sounds contradictory to me. Maybe you can help me out with this one..Thanks for all the very useful videos!

The further the take back the more racket head speed you can generate - so if you start higher and further back you can generate more head speed (therefore more speed of shot or more spin). It doesn't need to be super high, but for a very attacking volley you can swing from higher. Hope that makes sense...

Any thoughts about your long follow through? Yours seem to be a lot longer than Galan’s. What if the ball comes back (not being a winner)? Not much time to bring racket back to ready position

Great comment! And well spotted. The difference is that mine was feeding from a basket and you are exactly right, in a game situation is would be shorter to be ready for the next one! ....basket feeding has its place, but is often not as specific to a game!

I love the explanation on how the ball trajectory follows the path of motion of the racket, however, it still puzzles me "WHY" the ball doesn't bounce up, off the open face. It defies logic, so could you elaborate on this ? Thanks !

It's because of the slice. The ball is rotating backwards and is hit in a pretty straight, long line to the back of the court so it hardly bounces.

@@FlorisvanOnna hi! I understand that part of the ball flight. What I mean is the precise moment the ball hits the face of the racket, why it doesn't "reflect" off at the same inbound angle (as light off a mirror). My thought is that the ball gets heavily deformed against the face, so you have a completely flat surface generating a huge amount of friction, preventing the ball to bounce "up".

Don't forget that you're swinging with slice. So the friction from the racket slicing through the ball applies a force with the same direction you're swinging.

Galan didnt have that turn of shoulders - in fact - his left hand went on opposite direction almost to make sure that there cant be a turn of shoulders :-) but in his level it doesnt matter. With your shot Sandy the footwork in not so good (i think?!) but i understand that the ball was fast and you didnt have a tme to open your right foot and step in with the left foot at the time of contact

It is actually rare to have enough time for that step in with the left foot - but I do still teach it with people learning to understand the rotation and momentum - but you see it less and less as the level goes up.
