      Támara Hill, MS NCC CCTP LPC hi Tamara my name is crystal my upstairs neighbor is schizophrenic. When I watch action tv she runs upstairs in her apartment thinking they’re shooting at her. This happens everyday. My neighbor follows us around from room to room in her apartment. What do you suggest. This has been happening since January 2019

    Tamara, I’m just an average Jane Doe and have a friend who I knew had extreme emotional and physical abuse. She was under psychological and psychiatric care. When her father died she told me she thought she was having delusions, particularly that a rat was gnawing under her sink. Once we were talking on the phone and she said she could hear the gnawing. I asked her if she could open the cabinet and take items out of the cabinet while staying on the phone with me. She said she could and she took things out one by one until the cabinet was empty and she described each item and the wood of the cabinet and that there was no evidence of gnawing. She said her fear and anxiety were gone and she realized she was having a delusion she thought was probably brought on by the loss of her parent. I believe this worked for her because I was on the phone with her at the right time and because she trusted me. Trust once developed goes a long way.

      Hi Bonnie,
      Thanks for your comment. It does sound like trust went a long way for you and her. One of the things I find most helpful when working with individuals suffering from delusional beliefs is that they look for other people to treat them differently or "crazy." They look for people to not believe them or take them seriously. When someone shows them unconditional positive regard or unconditional concern and love, they cling to that. That's one of my most powerful tools to use in all of my therapeutic relationships. It's powerful to say the least.

    I have an old childhood friend who has extreme delusions. After her mom killed herself is when all of it started. She still believes her family is alive but have been kidnapped. She texts me constantly very delusional things all of the time. Says things like she’s being raped and tortured or ppl are out to get her, reading her mind controlling her life and cries out for help but I don’t know what to say or do for her. She’s currently homeless living far away from me. I don’t know how to address her issues bc she believes everything she says even though it’s not true and can’t reason with her bc she gets mad and says no one believes her. ☹️ it’s so sad and wish I had my best friend back or at least wish she could get help.

      This is what I’ve been dealing with my schizophrenic mother since age 6 and now I’ll be 34 this year and I’m still dealing with her on going episodes, she becomes very aggressive when I try to talk to her about her hallucinations and I try to explain that these hallucinations aren’t real that it’s all because of her illness, but she doesn’t believe me at all. She thinks that I am trying to disrespect her or get over on her when I try to help her.
      I recently just saw a tiktok by the name of schizophrenichippie this man has the same hallucinations as my mother auditory & visual, so he gets his phone to start recording what he sees through his phone camera and replays it back to himself that way he can confirm if what he sees & hears is real or not. I thought this was a great idea for my mother to try out and I tried to explain this to her but she doesn’t try to make any changes, or progress. I’m just so mentally drained out, frustrated, and so depressed because I don’t know what to do anymore. Also, My brother just passed away so her schizophrenia has been getting worse, and now here I am trying to handle all this alone has been very difficult. I’m just feeling very overwhelmed by everything that has happened in my life by having a schizophrenic mother and no family for support. 😔

They stress me out too much. I grew up with one and the trauma is still fresh. I don't want anyone like that near me. I'll not even try to engage. Trying to help my niece that suffers from religious delusions & hallucinations. Its hard because she refuses to believe that she has a mental disorder and makes me feel like I am the one with the problem. She talks about the same things over & over like the end of the world is imminent, her visions/messages from God, and her battles with demonic forces to save mankind. When I bring up other topics to discuss like, "how's work" or "have you seen any good movies lately" she will reply with one word answers & revert back to God or Satan. Immediate & extended family have distance themselves from her by no longer inviting her to family gatherings or events. She has no friends either. I am going to really try your advice of asking her to join me in helping me understand her reality by mtg w/ a professional. I dont want to give up on her, she is a good person & I love her!

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  4 роки тому +4

      HI Abby,
      I'm really sorry about this. Those with delusions tend to struggle A LOT with reality and sometimes their delusions are so close to "non-bizarre" or "normal beliefs" that it is difficult to determine if the person really is sick or simply has a "magical" way of thinking. And what I mean by "magical" is a type of thinking that is exaggerated, fantasized, and polluted with desire or wishful thinking. In these cases, if the person is willing to go to a psychotherapist or their primary doctor and talk about their beliefs, the provider can make some suggestions or even do a brain scan to see if something neurological is going on. The brain scan has to be "ordered" by a doctor suspecting something out of the ordinary, however. But getting her to her primary doctor and somehow telling them about the behavior or beliefs may lead to open doors. Take care

      @LADYDIVAful 4 роки тому +3

      Please don’t give up on your niece. Religious Trauma Syndrome is real! I know many people who are like her yes they need therapy to help them unpack this disordered thinking.
      I left the church, and I am still dealing with things that manipulated my mind and caused me to live in fear. For starters I had to detach from believing I was going to hell for certain behaviors.
      I’m learning how to embrace “love” to counteract the stinking thinking.
      I have a friend who received hypnotherapy, and it was her X-factor. It revealed the core issues, then she was able to press the reset button and start her healing process!

    It is very hard not to be frustrated because 5 days in the week i keep listening to her and care about her feelings, sometimes just listen yo her delusions and not commenting but that doesn’t help the delusional thought from going away and when you live with someone who constantly accusing you or your mother of things that are not real its so hard sometime i feel like i will go crazy myself :( our life has been a living hell since my little sister got diagnosed. We could be siting as family taking about dogs for example and she just gets mad and accuse us of talking about her. We could be living normally and she come and attack us verbally that we are watching her moves and thoughts and wont leave her alone. My company and I exited my apartment today to discover a strange man at the corner of my yard just standing there. He took off and at some point we walked past the man not paying attention. A few minutes later I look up and this man is clearly looking right at me with hands on hips and starts towards me waving his arms. I keep thinking he can't mean me. He approaches me and asks why I'm watching him and says I got no warrants and I've done nothing to you. He starts saying I'm trying to call the police but I have nothing with me. The person with me tried to reason and I tried to pull them along. I'm hoping for a video to share so maybe they'll handle these things better in the future.

    My fiancé's mother is experiencing schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. They went to her psychiatrist today. After their session, my fiancé wanted to talk to her doctor privately. However, he couldn't ask the doctor any of the questions he had made a list of, because the doctor acted very aggressively. Doctor told my fiancé that he tells his mom: "Whatever you are having in your mind is not real." I have to keep telling her it is not real. "There is no operatives trying to make you commit a suicide. No one is trying to make you homeless, it is NOT real!". Unfortunately, we are not sure if it is the correct way to talk to someone who is experiencing psychosis. My fiancé always tells his mom "I am sorry mom. I am sorry that you feel like this". He can't say much. Doctor also told him that he should keep telling his mom that she should take her medications, but my fiancé thinks it is wrong to be so insisting and kind of forcing. Most of the time, he feels like it will push his mom away from him to insist too much about something that she doesn't want to do. I don't know which way is the right way, can someone please give us some advice? Also, when my fiancé asked the doctor if it is possible for his mom to take psychotherapy sessions, the doctor was like "Trust me, I have 45 years of experience, psychotherapy won't work for your mom." His mom already committed a suicide and she was almost dead. Doctors were surprised that she survived. I never want this to happen again. In these days, she keeps talking about how cruel the operatives are to her, they force her to commit a suicide every day. She also keeps telling my fiance that she wants to find an easy way to end her life. She even asked help to buy a gun. If you have anything to suggest to us, I would be very grateful.

      Gang stalking is very real. It falls in line with abuse by proxy. Which is done by narcissists, cults (which is a can be any religion and even businesses development groups or spiritual groups such from yoga to meditation), government experiments MKULTRA and political activist take downs such as COINTEL PRO etc. In the West we commonly recognise that Russia uses the ZERZETZUNG programs and mental health system on political dissidents, however as some topics are quashed under the term national security, this does not usually make mainstream media. However there are some examples.
      ua-cam.com/video/IseM9VJ1n2Q/v-deo.html
      People say Doctors and Psychiatrists can not be involved but unfortunately the leaders in Psychiatry have been involved.
      Donald Ewen Cameron (24 December 1901 - 8 September 1967)[1] - known as D. Ewen Cameron or Ewen Cameron - was a Scottish-born psychiatrist who served as President of the American Psychiatric Association (1952-1953), Canadian Psychiatric Association (1958-1959),[2] American Psychopathological Association (1963),[3] Society of Biological Psychiatry (1965)[4] and World Psychiatric Association (1961-1966).[5] In spite of his high professional reputation, he has been criticized for, among other things, his experimentation on adults and children as well as his involvement in child sexual abuse, administering electroconvulsive therapy and experimental drugs, including poisons such as curare, to patients and prisoners without their informed consent, and his role in the history of the development of psychological and medical torture techniques. Some of this work took place in the context of the Project MKUltra program for the developing of mind control and torture techniques, psychoactive poisons, and behavior modification systems.
      Testimonies to the Presidential Commission on BioEthics
      ua-cam.com/video/21l92gEc1S8/v-deo.html
      Unfortunately the whole program is setup so any reports of abuse appear delusional. Psychiatrists never look at evidence and are given a tick list of delusions of schizophrenia. The tick list includes symptoms which can be falsely induced. Even if a psychiatrist is not involved and believe the patient, they would not expose the program for fear of its methods being used on them.
      Please see examples of methods used:

      pepe luvsyou you are 100% incorrect. People who are abused by Narcissist are not always gang stalked although the chances of being gang stalked is increased if you are being abused by a narcissist. Narcissists like to make out sane people are crazy or have schizophrenia to discredit them, so no one believes the otherwise sane person. This allows them to control and abuse a victim further, as once discredited mentally, others will not believe the victim when they tell the truth regarding there abuse. Others, such as friends, family etc etc are often misinformed by the narcissist and used to in an abuse by proxy campaign.

I would encourage him to avoid any conversation with her that may result in a "power struggle" or result in her trying to convince him of something. He will get absolutely nowhere and feel drained. Challenging the delusions isn't something that is going to work because she's going to engage in circular reasoning with him. It's a cycle! I feel for him. His best bet is to educate himself as much as he can (videos, books, articles, websites, etc) about delusional disorder.

Now all health care is bias, e if i seek talking aid , its coloured advanced and thats the way it is. maybe, some psych nurse has personal insight and dismisses the patient files and can help. but im stuck , revovering and not blaming myself but yeah, harm done

    What about when they don't think they are ill, they are out of reality, not grasping the concept they need help and refuse medication? I would say stubborn but lack of a sense of reality

      That's known as anosognosia - a kind of mind blindness - that occurs when the individual is too sick to know what they should do to help themselves. Very sad. I do have a video on this that may be helpful.

    Explaining how I see it does not go well, being empathetic is better It's very difficult to speak with a Schizophrenic that also suffers from Anosognosia. Just listening takes a very long time, it seems like hours a day listening. I am just counting down the days until she is finally diagnosed and treated.

      Kent, Thanks for your comment.
      You're correct. Explaining how you see it doesn't always go well which is why you'd want to choose your approach wisely. Anosognosia is a serious barrier and may be a barrier for a very long time. Treatment of these individuals requires a strategic approach. Hopefully treatment will happen for this person.
      Take care

      Thanks. It has been a long time over 4 years since she first told me of the voices. Found LEAP from Dr. Xavier Amador and after practicing for a week I was able to get her to agree to an evaluation.

    As far as religion goes. A "belief" does not make that "belief" true. A lot of religious (I'll say so-called christians because that's what I know mosty about) people say that they believe in the bible but don't even follow what is says. So what is that if not a delusion? Just because there are millions of people who "believe" in something does NOT make it true, good, bad, wrong or right.

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  3 роки тому +2

      I've heard this point many many times and sadly it's based on limited knowledge or experience with, shall I say, "bad Christians." This is then generalized and transformed into an argument against the religion as a whole. I've seen exactly what you are talking about but I ALSO have seen the opposite and I must say, the beauty that stems from a TRUE believer's heart is far from a delusion.
      I can't make you believe it but I can diminish the "delusion theory" by highlighting the good that comes from the hearts of true followers of Christianity. In fact, I am one. 😉

      @@TherapistTamaraHill I know you're a Christian and I'm not trying to start an argument, insult or degrade anyone. I was born and raised as a Christian myself and it wasn't until I started thinking for myself and doing some research that I've found no proof of anything in the bible. Was told not to question the word of God and in church you have to just sit there and listen. Just the fact that Christians are not even mentioned in the Bible to tell you something. (Unless they put it in a newer version.) Christ himself didn't mention it. Supposedly he was a Jew, in Greek clothing.?? But I digress. You'll have to define bad Christian and a true Christian because I don't really see the difference. How do good deeds determine whether a person is delusional or not? I wasn't aware that that was a factor. So only evil doers can be delusional. LOL... Well it's not about beauty from the heart, good deeds or emotions that determine whether you're delusional or not. It's about whether or not it can be backed up by factual truth. I don't expect you to agree with me. Christians don't challenge their beliefs to find out if it's true. They just believe.
      At the Council of Nicea in 325 AD it was convened by the emperor Constantine to resolve the controversy of Arianism, a doctrine held that Christ was not divine but a created being.
      The Council of Constantinople declared doctrine of the trinity, Father Son and the Holy Spirit are 3 equal parts of the single godhead. And that's all I have to say about that.

      I allowed your second comment to come through because I think it's good for people to be educated to how some see this topic.
      I agree we should question! Even religion. Even the things we think we clearly understand as fact. No matter how far we go in life (even in science) we still lack answers to a lot of mysteries. But questioning keeps us from being narrow-minded. We would be foolish to believe science explains all of life because it doesn't. Ask any healthcare provider who has witnessed human processes! And we would be equally as foolish to believe religion gives us all answers.
      There must be balance!
      Thank you for sharing your view on this!
      Take care

    You're saying religious people aren't delusional because of the number who believe? Does that mean you believe that members of cults aren't delusional? Or that it was true that the sun revolved around the Earth back when a large number of people believed it? To me, these seem like erroneous, ad-populum-type arguments. Something isn't true because its popular; it might be true for others reasons, but popularity has nothing to do with it.

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  2 роки тому +4

      That's a good point. But no, that's not what I'm saying. I would have to re-listen to this video to comment fully on what I meant.
      I think it's important to understand that our society is built on democracy - control of a group by the majority of its members. Sometimes delusions fall into this category. We have so many things that are characterized as "acceptable" or "abnormal" because it is "popular." Homosexuality was once believed to be an illness and is now believed to be a choice (or in some groups - to be "genetic") because of the majority of people who believe this. The majority rule has complicated this picture a great deal. The other thing we believe is "normal" or "abnormal" because of the majority rule is politics, race and culture, age, etc. We could go on for days. So the majority rule influences our thinking A LOT. Sadly!
      However, in terms of mental health, we do have to be more careful with how mental illness is explained and characterized. Delusions are false beliefs held to be true (and causes distress or some kind of life-related discomfort) despite clear and convincing evidence to the contrary. Religious beliefs - excluding cults and other harmful religions - are not delusions. Delusions are unhealthy. Healthy religious affiliation actually adds to one's life, provides community, inspires hope, builds character, and contributes to society in positive ways. Delusions often do not.
      I hope this makes sense
