The best horse that day was Mystic Dan he beat all the favorites why is everyone saying he’s not? He came into the race with second best speed figure I knew if he ran his best he would have a chance.

Ground loss is not the key; energy loss is the metric you need to concentrate on. In that regard both Sierra Leone and Forever Young suffered the most energy loss. In a three horse race they both cream Mystik Dan.

You’re missing some very important aspects in the race. One, you are not giving enough credit to Mystic Dan for breaking from the gate better than Dornoch and getting to the rail for that ground saving trip. Two, you are not giving enough credit to Mystic Dan for being brave enough to push into a hole that wasn’t there. It takes a brave three year old to do that regardless whether or not the jockey wants to go there. BH is a passenger and a horse is not a car, you can press the gas on a horse but he may not respond if he doesn’t like the choice of the driver. That doesn’t happen with a car. So give more credit to the horse and a little less to the jockey. Three, all the issues that SL and FY encountered in the race happened because of their inability to break from the gate and have enough early speed to gain a good position. They’re one dimensional horses and for that reason you can’t call either the “BEST” horse in the race. The best horse in this race was the winner and his name is Mystic Dan. He earned the win more because of his ability and character with a rider that made less mistakes than the rest.

I listened to your great video analyses prior to the race and you convinced me to make an exacta with Mystic/Sierra/Forever. Yes, it hit well, but I'm sad I didn't also place a trifecta!!! I was surprised just now hearing JK say he didn't have Mystic anywhere on his card, especially after you laid out how he could sneak up and win. Thank you for your great commentary. By comparison, 2 races prior in a 14 horse field a 5/1 ON TOP ... over a 20/1 paid better. Highly unusual. Hey, I want my "Stupid Money" bonus on Derby day - what can I say.

First it's MD benefited from a heavily biased track on the rail in the Southwest and now it's he was very fortunate and had alot of things go his way...Well let's see..We knew that he like moisture in the track , we knew he was one of the best getting out of the gate, we knew he didn't mind the kickback of mud in his face, we knew he had the talent to travel down on the rail around the entire track where most do not want to be at all, we knew he had post position#3 & that Sierra Leone was going to drop back at start if the race and if dornoch beat him out of the gate for some reason then he would follow him until he was out of gas and if not then follow somebody else but, we knew he would be in the second pack which is no stretch per previous race..We also heard BH talk about the trip MD had in the Arkansas derby where Liberal Arts Bolted into MD but, that you couldn't really see it on replay because it happened in bad spot on track but did disturb MD pretty good and the point of BH saying that is MD did not quit and at the end of the race was still coming,..We also knew MD had worked out 13/143 & 1/71 , then a maintenance work leading up to the derby so highly disagree with you with all the bias track stuff in southwest & the was fortunate angle/ perfect trip in the derby because was not perfect trip as he had to get some kickback of dirt in his face from the horse in front of him and going through that hole at top of the stretch on turn was not without being bumped pretty good...Then on top of all this is BH and the confidence he had going in, a specific game plan that he wanted to execute and did which wasn't of extreme difficulty because of all the talent the horse had

You are absolutely correct about all of this as it put this particular horse in the spot he needed to be to win the race by three inches. Give tremendous credit to the trainer and jockey. Having said that, he will never beat the second and third horses again at this or a similar distance. They used tremendous amounts of energy running the turn as widely as they did and he still only beat them by inches. It was a great Derby, but I'm waiting for the Breeders Cup when he will have to beat them again in a much smaller field...I will make some money on the rematch.

I agree with PTF...If Forever Young had been outside of Sierra Leone I think Forever Young wins and Sierra Leone keeps drifting towards the rail. FY was the only thing keeping SL running a straight line and SL clearly affected Forever Young's stretch run. I may be biased because I had Forever Young at 15/1 in a futures bet

The top 3 were the three best in that order, in my opinion, so a very fair result in that sense despite some of the controversy between Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Rounding out my top 5 of Derby stars (horses only) would be Resilience and Stronghold. They didn't finish quite as well as Mystik Dan, but they were right there in that next flight of horses, ran wider trips than he did and didn't disgrace themselves at all getting to the wire. The fact that T O Password came from 18th to 5th having been a need-the-lead type shows you how much this race melted down, and those two fought. I think both are future G1 winners.

    • @ptfornatale

Nailed it on the Sierra Leone analysis, JK. Youre the only one to credit him checking on the far turn to costing him the race. Tyler missed the opening down the backside before Grand mo moved up and closed him in. That was the whole difference in the race i have no question. He blows by everyone down the stretch otheerwise. Truly an impressive run by SL though consiedering the horse had to stop and then start again, as big as that horse is, extremely athletic to accelerate again once asked. I believe hes your breeders cup classic winner and Belmont winner.
As for the stretch run, those were two alpha horses throwing it down in their own head to head race with Dan had the rail run.
Pace- weird one. Many said it was slow but since when is sub 24 and sub 46 going a mile and a quarter slow? Makes the closers look pretty good though considering middle of the race slowed down a bit which is probably why timeform didnt give Dan that much greater of a figure than the other two, considering all the ground given up by SL and FY.

Brian Hernandez rides the rail the same way EVERY day of the year, whether it's FG,Churchill,or Ellis. It's not coincidence that both Oaks- Derby victors were both horses who were widest vs a gold rail at Oaklawn last out, then moved inside at churchill...
And I posted 100x BEFORE the race Fierceness was a THROWOUT, because he is a SLOOOW need the lead type: his 47.1s at BC and Florida Derby were bad. He ran the same exact race in the Ky Derby as he did in the Fl Derby and BC: He ran 47.1, as the leader ran 46.3..

I can't say Sierra Leone was best because he lost lost ground and had to check. He routinely creates his own problems because he is slow out of the gate, slow to respond (no tactical speed), and he consistently lugs in in the stretch. That is just who he is. Mystik Dan may be less physically gifted, but he is courageous and does have the tactical speed to hit a hole when the rider asks. But I do think Forever Young was the 'best horse' on the day.

JK: Mystik Dan 3rd best? Not so fast. Keep in mind Mystik Dan was nearest to the leaders throughout. . Yes; he received a great ride and covered the shortest distance, but both SL and FY were nowhere near the pacesetters, and closed strongly into a fast early pace. As I’ve said in another comment, SL &/or FY win if SL runs in a straight path. But he didn’t. Any way you cut it, it was a great race. All 3 ran their hearts out and gave us a thrilling finish.

    POSTED 3 WEEKS AGO:
Of TP's seven FL Derby winners before 2024, only one of the 5 that contested the KD emerged with a win. Public opinion still has Always Dreaming a lucky winner due largely to the misfortune of Classic Empire.
The average post FL Derby starts for TP's winners is approximately 3. The high being 6 (Always Dreaming) and the low being 1 (Scatt Dady) See summary below:
    2007 - Scatt Daddy - 18th in KD retired.
    2014 - Constitution - Didn’t Contest the KD (won 1 of 5 races thereafter)
    2015 - Materiality - 7th KD (Finished 8th in Belmont and retired)
    2017 - Always Dreaming - 1st in KD (Didn’t win in 4 races thereafter - retired)
    2018 - Audible - 3rd KD (won 1 of 4 races thereafter and retired)
2021 - Known Agenda - 8th in KD (4th in Belmont then retired)
    2023 - Forte - Didn’t Contest the KD (won 1 of 3 races thereafter - retired)
How can the above be used to forecast the fortunes of Fierceness? Let's keep it real. The above is not a flattering record.
Fierceness' in and out pattern of performance, coupled with the record of the barn he will be representing, doesn't suggest this colt should be at the top of any KD list, despite his runaway win in the FL Derby.
Fierceness is an easy bet against in the KD.
NB: Horses do not run Beyers but rather the figures are assigned and have often been changed in the past. Bellamy Road was assigned a 120 after his NTR in the 2005 Wood Memorial. He finished off the board in the KD.

Maybe they should reduce the field to 14 horses to give the best horse a better chance to win. Afterall the Oaks field is limited to 14. Also, the Kentucky Derby is the only time in the year when a race is run with 20 horses. When so much can go wrong with such a large field, the best horse doesn't always win. Also, what's the point in having a point system if Churchill Downs won't let all the horses with the most points even enter the Kentucjy Derby? Churchill Downs power trip.

None other than Jerry Bailey says during aftermath of race during broadcast that “Forever Young gave as good as he got.” If Forever Young doesn’t cause Sierra Leone to check - the latter wins the race. Sierra Leone was the best horse followed by Forever Young and Mystik Dan (perfect trip). I would make the case that Mystic Dan was the beneficiary of a golden rail on a track with a relatively high moisture content that was still in the process of drying out. Not too different from the conditions that held in the Southwest.
This may explain why he ran so well while relatively close to the pace.
Given that he saved all the ground and stayed glued to what may have been a golden rail, I think his performance rates no better than 4th best in the race.

He got cut off by the 12 at the gate and interfered in stretch. No way wasn't he the best horse and I didn't even pk him . Ur correct.

I love FY and think he was best but I don't think the break was a big deal. Pace was fast and he ran through there efficiently.

Guys Guys Guys....Rosario caused the race. He shut off Forever Young at the start, and didn't want to keep his horse on the rail before Mystic Dam took the rail.....He's a crook!!!!

I really think Kinchen is just all talk and can't identify longshots who are potential winners in races but just talks about the favorites which are pretty obvious. He was all over Fierceness in all his vlogs and said how the race will be run at a moderate clips in half-mile of 47 or 48 in the derby. He didn't understand the complexion of the race when it comes to the KD. He focused on how Fierceness won the Florida Derby and blah blah blah blah. This dude just talks nonsense in my opinion 🤮
