I like the idea of stapling the webbing as a support. Good thinking.
You’re absolutely welcome thanks for the positive feedback really appreciated 👍😷👍
Great channel keeping it totally real
Thank you 😊
Mel , you are a natural presenter , I subscribed to your channel and have binge watched most of your presentations of which you have made me think of you as one of the best, keep it going great stuff, 👌👍👍👍
Thank you buddy I woke up feeling a little glum this morning wondering why my channel isn’t growing so thank you for the kind words and encouragement really appreciated 👍☺️👍
We love ya Mel, thank you for all the videos
Thank you love you all too stay safe out there 👍😷👍
Love your videos Mel well done
Thank you 😊
Nice little fix doing that and putting the diverter on the way you have has given me a idea for mine. My heater blows the hot air towards the front of the van from midway down the van and I have wanted a flow of hot air near the back door. Nice one Mel. 👍😊
You’re absolutely welcome nice to know I’ve helped you .thank you for taking the time to comment really appreciated 👍🤓👍
hey mel glad your well ! great idea with the heated under the bed
Thank you and stay safe too 👍😊👍
Another brilliant video
Thank you 😊
Can't think of anything worse than mould growing round your back door gas cupboard.... 😵🤣
Great vlog as always Mel.
Thank you buddy I was waiting for someone to pick that up 😂😂👍
Great idea Mel 👊
Thank you buddy 👍😷👍
Hi Mel Just the job well done nice and neat .I like it ! Robbie U K
Thank you 😊
hi Mel keep up the good work toon rob
Thank you 😊
Hi Mel, all your hint and tips are appreciated.
You are showing us all the things to avoid or install, saving us more time to enjoy our days out.
Stay well and stay safe and wash your face😂
Ash 🏴
Ps sorry not been commenting for a while like you I’ve been caught up with home improvements. 😢
Thank you ash always nice to hear from you good luck with the DIY stay safe 👍😷👍
Mel, check under your bed for anything that might not like the heat, maybe insulate your gas locker. Also re the wood burner, try a few pieces of coal, when they take they last a lot longer than wood.
Thank you i have tried it goes out 👍😊👍
Glad your cunning plan was a success. Hope the pipe doesn't get too hot and melt anything.
Thank you buddy no worries they don’t get that hot 👍🤓👍
Cant beat a good tinkering mel, 👍
That’s rite 👍😂👍
Well done Mel, keep 'so coming, love your honest approach to vanlife.....and I haven't even got a van, just love the vids.
Oh thank you that’s so kind of you I’m so grateful stay safe 👍😷👍
Mel tis better to get up for a wee than not get up and finding out in the morning you still had this week. HA HA
So true 👍😂👍
Hey Mel. Great channel. With the wood burner start using coal. It burns for way way longer than the soft wood off cuts you are currently burning. This might mean you don’t need to upgrade you wood burner. Worth a try. I do mean coal rather than bbq coals.
Keep up the great content
Hi thank you 😊
Nice Job Mel , That should help a lot. Maybe a vent on the bottom of the doors? i am no expert :) , someone should show Dan n mazzy this video they really do need some under bed heating .
Thank you and yes love Dean and Mazie mad as a box of frogs 👍😂👍
Mel, on our small stove we use smokeless ovoids, try a coal/ fuel merchants. We use them thru the night damped down and the fire stops in, worth a try👍
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say I’ll definitely give it a try 😊👍
That should improve things. Might need a small vent on the cupboard doors for air flow? Try a hardwood log/off cut for overnight - that's what I used to do with the woodburners I've had in houses here - they burn a lot slower, so were good for keeping the fire going overnight.
Thank you Linz my door actually has a great big gap in it so plenty air flow I should have mentioned it in the video good point about the wood I’ll have to see if I can get some 👍🤓👍
Fantastic video MEL how about drilling holes in the doors under you bed as well . Well done well.👍🇬🇧🤘🍺
Thank you that’s a good idea 👍
yay
Thanks mate
I did exactly what you done
Warms the mattress nicely
Thank you yes it’s working great 👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld
I also put my fuel tank and noisey fuel pump underneath the van, cable tied it like you showed me,and wrapped it in insulation.
can’t hear the ticking.
Great video
My friend put a seperate tube running under my bed works great never had mold anywhere in my van as no cold spots if you have cold spots the moisture builds up creating mold. So important heating under the bed and the garage area of the van.
Well done sounds like your on top of it you’re absolutely rite 👍😊👍
Hi Mel
I am new to your channel but love it , and will be following you both , your are my dream ,
Your stove , did you know the more dence the grain the longer the wood burns , so if you put a couple of oak logs in before you sleep it will last all night ,
Will look out for you next week
Lynne
Thank you Lynne that’s absolutely rite I’m just using up all the off cuts from all the van building I’ve done at the moment maybe I shouldn’t and go buy some proper wood 👍😊👍
Great video again Mel keep it up(that's what she said)lol
Haha thank you 😊
Hi mel
Have you considered putting a vent in one of the doors to increase air flow etc???
Keep up the good work all tips are usefull to some mate.
Thank you that’s a great idea 👍😷👍
Brilliant, this is exactly what we are going to do over the next few weeks with our van and looking forward to seeing your results. Not many people mention this issue when having a closed storage area under the bed area in climates like ours in the UK. Great tip thank you :)
Thank you for the positive feedback and good luck with your build 👍😊👍
Hi Mel,are you sure the warm air, because it is unable to go anywhere but stop under the bed will not make it worse, normally you have to have a throughput of air.
I am not interested in vans, but you make the vids interesting to watch, well done.
Thank you for the comment and yes the air can escape out the top of the door and the back of the bed 👍😊👍
Hi Mel, can't you rebuild the empty floor space between the wood burner and the sliding door to a shower? The burner is so special, please keep one!
No worries it’s staying 👍😊👍
Doing similar with my van conversion with the diesel heater, will use the strap idea to fix the ducting in place, thanks for that Mel. Love your channel , keep the videos coming 😊
Thank you buddy and good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld Cheers Mel 👍
Did that as part of our build.keeps the garage warm /mattress .
Fantastic 👍😊👍
Nice one Cyril. I could do with directing a bit of pipe at my water rank which is now full of ice and not water 🙄🤦😏
HAve used solid fuel heaters on boats - a shovel full of smokeless coal keeps the fire going for quite a while banked up....
My wood burner isn’t built for coal it simply goes out 👍
You can get digital hygrometers deluvered for about 3-4 quid which tell you the relative humidity of where they are placed. Whilst they may not be accurate to small tolerances they give you a very useful picture of what is going on regarding moisture and more importantly if the changes you make are working. "shes a bit moist" oooooooohhhj, matron!
Thank you buddy 👍😷👍
Checkout lekto wood fuels , they do all night blocks that will burn for eight hours keeping the burner ticking over 😊
Oh that’s really interesting I’ll have to try some thank you 😊
Go in any caravan or motorhome and it is full of vents to allow the van to breath, you need to circulate the air, its why houses have air bricks, its why when you open your van windows it goes away, its why you're told to open the windows when you have condensation, its why its called an AIRING cupboard. Even modern carbon neutral homes circulate the air to prevent condensation because sealing any structure causers these issues.
You need to circulate the air with air vents.
Thanks for the great advice I do have my roof vent open and my front windows open a couple inches plus in the morning I open my bed windows also during the day I keep my van open as much as I can 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld Mel from what you are saying is all your vents/windows are high...so no air being moved from lower ends of your van. Again look in any motorhome or caravan and they have 3-4 vents in the floor. These people fit dehumidifiers are wasting money, its all about circulating the air.
Hi Mel bought one of those battery chargers and first impressions im quite pleased with it. thanks for your recomendation. charges all 4 batteries no probs.
You’re absolutely welcome thank you for your feedback really appreciated 👍😷👍
talk about strange weather Mel we had 30c yesterday now its going to be 22c for 2 weeks with rain every day ,Mould is bad mate ,, dry air from the heater will be great , I also spray bleach diluted 80% with distilled water works great ,,,,, bugga no fishing !
Rob

Thank you buddy that’s golden 👍😊👍
hi mel just logged on to you latest vid mate, excellent idea to get some extra heat into the back of the van. got the same problem with mine, mould on a bag that i keep my levelling ramps in only trouble with me is that my new diesel heater is still in the box waiting for some decent weather to fit it. roll on summer, keep em coming mate regards to you both and stay safe.
I’m sure working in the cold is what done my hands in so definitely worth waiting till spring take the time to get all the parts you need good luck buddy 👍🤓👍
Hello Mel I made a very simple butterfly choke in the T piece so I can control the airflow into my shower as it was too hot, I used a tin lid and a tent peg which I flattened in the middle for a self tapping screw to fix tin lid too, and formed a bend at the top to control the position of the flap. Very simple and works perfedtly.
Thanks, I'll try that too
I love it that’s brilliant thank you next time I find a tent peg when I’m out metal detecting I’ll keep it 👍😊👍
What about covering short heater pipe end with a plastic disc with a 1 inch hole in the centre to push more heat to rear or van.
Thank you that’s a great idea 👍😷👍
Use a directional flow valve 👍👍 I’m sure you can figure a way to modify it to work
Thank you buddy it’s working really well 👍😊👍
Another masterpiece Mel.... However, I believe you can actually buy a silent fuel pump separately for your Chinese diesel heater... John & Mandy are getting one for theirs, so they say, but this pump is a bit expensive. If I was having a Chinese Diesel Heater fitted to my proposed new van.... I'd definitely get a silent fuel pump for it, as the constant ticking of the standard one when the heater is firing would simply drive me mad.... You can increase the flow rate from one of the two vents by partially choking the other vent...
Thank you buddy the pump sounds louder that it actually is because of the mic I use when the seat is down can hardly hear it 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I'd hear it though Mel....
I did same mate my diesel heater is under my passenger seat I run the truma duct right through to the back doors under shower cubicle (I copied Greg's root 😅)you'll definitely feel/see the difference 👍
Cheers buddy and your absolutely rite it’s so much better now 👍😷👍
A real good idea, Mel. Mould under the mattress in these cold temps is a common problem. Nice one.👍
Thank you buddy 😊
AS ALWAYS MEL GREAT VID NEVER UNNEEDED , THE MOLD IN THE BACK MAY BE THE LPG THE GAS ALWAYS CONDENSATE SO THAT MAY BE ADDING TO THE TROUBLE? ,TRY LAGGING THE LOCKER OR THE GAS BOTTLE? JUST A THOUGH A JOB FOR WET DAY THANKS AGAIN MEL FROM SUNNY SKEGGY UK
Thank you that’s really appreciated you could have a good point there 👍
What kind of Lagging? I am about to Box my LPG bottle in and don't want the same issue as Mel. Is their a specific type of lagging you should use
@@stewarthills8308 and must be better than none just feel the gas bottle I have under van gas so I do not have that trouble, but I have seen a few have the same trouble, where there's hot and cold mold will grow hope that helps thank for your reply
Love it.....an all nighter!!!!!!
👍😂👍
The "all-nighter" comment did make laugh, I know the problem only too well !
Nice one Mel 🙂👍🏻
Thank you buddy 👍
Lol 😆 when that heater started to get going I thought you were going to take off 🤣and omg that clicking 🙈🙈🙈 good idea tho hope it works for you
Thank you it’s working a treat 👍🤓👍
Nice one Mel
I done the same in my van, it worked too 😊👍
Good job
Thank you it’s working great and it’s keeping my water tank from freezing too 👍😊👍
Mel, I have recently subscribed to your channel, after seeing about 2 other videos by you. I like your presentation style and content. And this is a good topic today. Keep up the good work!
Thank you that’s really appreciated 👍😊👍
Thought you might need a runway....chocks away..lol
Love it
Haha thank you 😊
you might look into a breathable matting that goes under mattress. Its used a lot in the marine industry .its called hypervent
I know the stuff you mean iv used it on boats 👍😊👍
Mel you are full of brilliant ideas fantastic please keep it up m8
Thank you buddy that’s really kind of you to say 👍😊👍
Hey Mel, I was so surprised at about 8mins when you found there was indeed warm airflow out from that top tube; when you started I was convinced that not only would air not go up into the top tube, I thought that air would be sucked IN to the top tube, being drawn in by the outward flow of the straight-out tube, as it would pull in air as it went past the top outlet. I thought you would need a Y, rather than a T junction, or put in some sort of internal deflector. I'm still surprised, but hey, it did actually work. Interesting vid Mel, thanks.
They move a lot of air and fast it’s actually working just right I’m still getting hot air in the living space and underneath my bed isn’t freezing cold anymore 👍🤓👍
New sub. Love your positive attitude 🙌
Thank you that’s kind of you 🤓👍
Thanks for all your hard work Mel, used a lot of your tips for my build. Keep safe and stay warm!
Thank you buddy that’s really nice to hear makes all the hard work worthwhile 👍🤓👍
ooow that's sparked an idea! 15mm speedfit coil sandwiched between 2 layers of ply under mattress fed with warm air from diesel heater🤔=warm bed👍being FT getting my shower working was a game changer, that first hot shower is epic🙏ATB Shane👏
Brilliant idea 👍😊👍
here's
a thought .. no clue about right or wrong ! hopping someone else might steer us all... you do not need heat what's more important is air movement ! even a little usb fan might solve the mould problem, but heat under the bed does sound like a nice plan :)
You’re absolutely right air moving is the key warm even air much better 👍🤓👍
Air movement is the key point 100% even cool air , but to avoid condensation you need close to equal heat distribution throughout the space.
As already said vent for air circulation
Another great idea, I’m using that one on mine. Keep them coming Mel
Thank you and you’re absolutely welcome 👍😊👍
Good job Mal i think you sleep warm nou hihi
Thank you nice and cosy 👍
Keep on keeping on mate, I've seen the under bed mould issue before so it's an Important consideration as is under mattress mould from the temp difference between the garage and the underneath of the mattress. The heat from your body can transfer against the unheated garage and cause moisture then mould!!!!
Thank you buddy 👍🤓👍
bugga i forgot ,
I put a heater in the basement I thought wish i didnt put it near the bed Because of the pump ticking , but the pipes The black heat air pipe comes up from the basement locker and runs under the bed to a air outlet , so far no mould so i think i did your trick with out even thinking about it Just worked that way ,its starting to get chilly at night now was down to 16c last night ,, time to test the heater again for the winter ,,
Rob
That’s great-5 here you got soft mate lol 😂
@@BigVanSmallWorld well your lucky you only get up once a night to pee wait 5 years it will be 5 times LOL ,,,,,Need heat at 3 am ,,,,,,
Haha thank you buddy 👍😷👍
Hi Mel, great video as always. Just a quick question but would it not work installing the diesel heater under the bed? Take care mate and all the best 👍🏻
Hi Mel, grand job there...probably best to put a vent the other side for air movement 👌 keep your chin up mucka..stay safe brother 💪
Thank you buddy 👍😊👍
Was going to suggest the same thing :)
A passive vent either on those cupboard doors or somewhere close by to promote airflow. Lucky you spotted the mold early though before it becomes an actual problem!
Thanks so much for your videos Mel. I’ve been watching them from your LDV days and have learnt a lot from you. I’m wanting to install a diesel heater before our winter starts so thanks for your good idea.
Thank you for the positive message it’s always nice to hear about how my videos help good luck with your heater 👍🤓👍
Hi mell that's a great idea it would make your bed nice and warm when get in yeh I think mine needs that,,,👍
Thank you I don’t think it would really work like that as my mattress is 8 inches thick 👍😊👍
Good idea with the webbing ,mines just on the floor👍
Thank you 👍🤓👍
maybe if you run conduite along the back wall it will be more effective...
Maybe 🤔 thanks for the suggestion 👍🤓👍
Love you mel, you’re doing a great job, always look forward to your videos👍👊
I thought an aeroplane was coming into land 🤣💜. Good simple but necessary job 😊. Have a nice weekend 🍺😃
Thank you Kat and you 👍🤓👍
Woohoo I've got my heating going now/5kw 45degree lush, to hot now gonna turn it down 🤣 Snow outside x
Well done Bex 👍🔥😅
@@BigVanSmallWorld Cheers Mel.
Great idea ....Bit like an electric blanket .....
Thank you almost 👍😂👍
Thanks for this Mel I'm about to sort the layout for my new budget banger 🤪 And under bed heating sounds great and something I hadn't thought of. And with it going to be my main cloths storage makes sense might save me buying a 12v elecy blanket also 😅 Can you get peat brickets in the uk ? There small And burn for hours use them in my fire place here. Would love a wood burner in my build but well out of the budget here in Ireland
Thank you for taking the time to comment I’ve tried different bricks to burn in my wood burner but not found any that are any good but not seen peat ones would love to visit Ireland one day maybe I’ll pick some up when I’m there good luck with your build under bed ventilation is really so over looked and mould can grow so fast nobody wants mouldy clothes 👍😂👍
To keep the pump as quite a possible you can buy a silicone jacket for the pump only about $1 from aliexpress. Then use the rubber mount and don't tighten too much to the underside chassis. My heater is then ply boxed in under the seat which cuts the noise down even more. I installed extra ducting during the initial build. One goes under the bed right to the back and blows across the back doors to keep the cold out. The other goes direct into the shower room for drying wet towels like an airing cupboard and dries the shower after use and the other port of course blows out into the living area. On idle i can barely hear my pump its not at all loud more of a very feint bump bump but i have to really listen for it even laying in bed.
This bit is important. Go into advance pump settings using the PIN code and set the idle to 1Hz and RPM to lowest setting. Many of these pumps are set too high. Some are 2Hz. Changing it to 1Hz literally saves 50% of the fuel used over night. If you van is well insulated it should hold 16C on idle when its 0C outside and not once should it go into boost mode. 1Hz = 70ml an hour 700ml for 10 hours. ... much cheaper than a bag of fire wood from the garage.
Thank you buddy that’s pure gold I’ll have to get an updated controller for my heater and try it thank you 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld if changing your controller you may have to change the motherboard also so they are compatible, worth buying as a pair(around £22 on eBay) as the motherboards tend to be delicate and the 1st thing to go wrong and keep your existing ones in a drawer for spares,
Loving it mell ,,, your helping no end with my build
Brilliant 👍 I’ve yet to start our build but love your clips 👍👍👍 keep it up and stay safe 🦠🦠🦠
Thank you and good luck with your build 👍😊👍
Nice one Mel, good idea that
Thank you 😊
Hi Mel , heating under the bed is really important, heat rises and will always escape upward so you could swap them round and send more heat under the bed and let it vent out through the cupboard doors under the bed. Also send some to the cab too. The wood burner is great but when you up the size you also up the KW power and you’ll find the burn time will be the same or at best add another hour if you are lucky, hard woods burn much slower as they are more dense but the fire does need to be hot for them to take. Loved the video as always and looking forward to the next one. Take care and thanks
Thank you buddy that’s really good advice much appreciated 👍
Ha ha yeah the pain of liv in van builds is real .
As is making the night without needing pee at our age 😆
And everything takes 3 times as long ..
Keep the good videos going fella :)
Thank you buddy really appreciate your positive feedback and encouragement 👍😊👍
Another belter Mel. I can’t remember if you’ve already done this or not ( it’s an age thing 😆). So if you have apologies. Have you thought about wrapping your heater pump with sound deadinging ( is that a real word) mat and two cable ties? Stay safe Mel 👍
Thank you buddy I’ll give this some thought 👍🤓👍
Love your content mate keep it up :) hope all's well in this cold weather
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say 👍🤓👍
We need more Mels in the world! Did you ever sort out a TV after you blew yours?
Thank you that is very kind of you to say I got given another TV it’s the same as the one i destroyed as it turns out I hardly watch it I’m always to busy with UA-cam 👍😊👍
Warm your batteries as well, not a bad thing.
Yep 👍
Put a shower in and use the kit which heats water via the diesel heater
Thank you that’s a great idea 👍
Would it help putting a vent in the doors allowing the air under the bed to circulate around the van therefore keeping it all dry
That’s not a bad idea 👍😊👍
Definitely, if you're pushing sir in you have to let the existing sir go somewhere, just a small grill vent in the doors would help
I literally did exactly this last week. I am trying to conjur a way to ensure nothing blocks the vent under the bed when storing gear maybe a wooden cage with mesh on the front and top i am thinking. I also put an air vent on the other side of the bed to make sure it circulates around the van.
Sounds like you have given it a lot of thought you’re definitely on the rite track well done 👍
Cheers Mel. I am an over thinker that’s why lol
Mel, I see you have a small wood stove too. I think a video that compares the two methods of heating a van would be a good topic for Van Life video (and channel). Comparing the ease of use, use of fuel and storing fuel to make comparable amount of heat, need for cleaning or maintenance, purchase cost, ease of installation, other considerations too (does the wood stove make entire van smell like smoke, issues with chimney air, need to add fuel to stove during night), etc. Which is easier to keep van at a moderate air temp (comfortable range)? Ability to use a thermostat (if possible with diesel heater). . I know you have mentioned the wood stove in this video, but I suggest (for your channel ) a video title that specifically addresses the comparison of “Wood Stove or Diesel Heater For Van Life?” (Something like that). Hope this helps.
Thank you that’s a really good idea I’ll definitely give it some thought although I have made quite a few videos about my wood burner 👍😊👍
Hi Mel,
When you started the channel at the end of the channel episode you used to say subscribe to my channel and I’ve got two cats and they’re hungry. But the videos now don’t mention the cats?
Are the cats OK?
Many thanks and enjoying the entertaining videos. ❤️
Cheers buddy and yes the cats are fine thank you for asking according to UA-cam people are clicking off the video to soon and it stops UA-cam from promoting my videos 🤷♂️👍🤓👍
It would also help if you had some holes in the doors under your bed maybe three at the top and the three at the bottom they would help equalise the temperature all over the van🚐☕️☕️👍🏼🏴🌈🙏🏼💙❤️💙❤️
Thank you yes that’s not a bad idea 👍
One thing for the van i am not interested in Mel, is one of those diesel heaters.
The noise they make is horrendous.
Genuine autoterm planar with silent pump and digital fan. You’ll only hear the air blowing if it’s flat out
Fit the pump outside underneath then they are as quiet as a mouse, had to redo mine as the ticking drove me crazy
You can hear it really badly in this video because the top of the seat is of once it’s down can hardly hear it I have now gotten so used to it I slept all night last night with it running 👍😊👍
Instead of leaving your doors open under your bed you could add an adjustable vent to them?
That’s a great idea 👍🤓👍
Good video Mel. Really seems to solve your problem. Have you taken any before/after temp readings yet to prove your point.
Love watching the channel mate so keep up the good work.
All the best Dave and Mal in Stoke
Thank you buddy and no I don’t have a thermometer 👍🤓👍
Mel
Just a thought
Would it help if you pulled the supply air from under the bed to help it circulate the air
Might be worth a try
Thank you buddy that’s brilliant idea 👍🤓👍
That Mel is a ruddy bloody good idea! 👍
Thank you 😊
