Entering Desolation Wilderness from Meeks Bay: Backpacking Tahoe to Whitney

After backpacking a couple of miles on a gentle grade traversing a ridge out of the Tahoe Basin from Meeks Bay on the Desolation Trail, you come to the Desolation Wilderness boundary. Here the forest develops a temperate look in places, not quite a temperate rain forest, but with enough moisture to support ferns and a soothing greenness. Great boulders are strewn about the dense forest floor liter. Sadly, parts of the forest floor are so dense with debris that great fires appear inevitable.
